And primary judge of the Superior Court of law for the County of Frederick in said state and district, personally appeared James Beckham aged Fifty-six years, resident in the said county in the said State and District, who being by me first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on his oat, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provision made by the Act of Congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War. "That he the said James Beckham enlisted in Northamberland County in the State of VA in the Company commanded by Captain Harrison of the 2nd Virginia on Continental establishment about the year 1776 or 1777, that he continued to serve in the said Corps, or in the service of the United States for nine months and then five years. That he was Captain at Charleston from which in November as Captain and returned to Virginia, but was not asked in ______ at service till he was discharged. He was captured at Charlestown, made his escape and returned to Virginia but was not called into actual services until the war was over. He was at the battles of Saratoga, Germantown, Stony Point and at the siege of Charleston, battles many skirmishes and that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services in a ________ amexed _________ A General Parker. Sworn to and declared before me, the day and your aforesaid. Robert White I, Robert White, Judge & C. As aforesaid do certify, that it appears to my satisfaction that said James Beckham did serve in the Revolutionary War, as stated in the preceeding declaration, against the common enemy, for the term of nine months, on the continental establishement; and I now transmit the preceedings and testimony taken and had before me, to the secretary for the Department of War, pursuant to the directions of the aforementioned act of congress. Robert White Beckham, James I, Robert B. White, Clerk of the Superior Court of law for the county of Frederick do thruthly certify that Robert White whose name subscribed to the written affidaviet and certificate is sole and primary Judge of the Superior Court of law for Frederick county. In testimony thereof I have herethereto subscribed my hand annexed my private seal there being no public seal of office this 11th day of May 1818. Robert B White Beckham, James - Declaration 4423 - March 1819 - Virginia: At a court continued and held for Frederick County the 2nd day of August 1820 personally appeared in this court being a court of record for said county James Beckham aged about sixty years, a resident in the said county who being first duly shown according to law, both on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War in the company commanded of Capt Harrison in the Second Regiment commanded by Cols. Spotswood and others in the Virginia Line and that he received a certificate for a pension S4423. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818. And that I have not since that time, by gift, sale, or in any manner, disposed of my property, or any part there of whith intent to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval service of the United States, in the Revolutionary War" passed on the 18th day of March 1818; and that I have not or has any person interest for me, any property as securities, contracts, or debts, due to me; nor have I any income other than what is contained on the schedules here to assigned and by me subscribed escepting necessary clothing and bedding, viz: One old horse. I am a laborer having no trade, but am very inform, and not able to do much work. James X his mark Beckham Sworn to in open court this 2nd day of August 1820. I, James Keith, clerk of the court of the county aforesaid do herby certify that the foregoing oath and the schedules annexed are truly copied from the records of the said Court and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the said court that the total amount in value of property entitled in the aforesdaid schedule is two dollars. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto my hand and affixed the seal of the said court in this 12th day of August 1820 and the 45th year of the Commonwealth. Ja. Keith. In 1818 he was issued certificate #4423 - Virginia - James Beckham - Capt Harrison - Private - Virginia lines in the army of the United States during the Revolutionary War. Inscribed on the Roll of Virginia at the rate of eight dollars per month, to commense on the 11th of May 1818. Certificate of Pension issued the 21st of Nov 1818 and sent to Hon. H. St. Geo Tucker of Virginia in Congress. Arrears to 4th of Sep 1818 - 3 21/31 - 6/50 = 30.47, semi annual. All's ending 04 Mar 1819 = 48.00 total $78.47. Revolutionary claims Act 18 Mar 1818 - nine months. Notification sent Oct 25, 1820 to Lemuel Kent, Winchester, Virginia. Paid at the treasurey DEAD under the act of the 6th April 1838, from 4th March to 22 April 1828, the day of his death. Agent notified 25 Jun 1840. Treasury Department Second Comptroller/s Office May 9th, 1840 Sir, Under the act of the 6th of April 1838 entitled "An act directing the transfer of money remaining unclaimed by certain pensioners and authorizing the payment of the same at the Treasury of the United States, "The child of James Beckham, a pensioner on the Roll of the Virginia Agency at the rate of eight dollars and no cents per month under the law of the 18th Mar 1818, has been paid at the Department from the 4th of March to the 22 April 1828, the day of his death.
