FREDERICKSBURG, VA - CEMETERIES - St. George Epispocal Church Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Located at corner of Princess Anne and George streets in Fredericksburg, VA. Oldest marked grave: 1752 (John Jones) Latest marked grave: 1924 (Virginia Patton) Survey completed: 1999/2000 Note: Additional sources used: "The History and Background of St. George's Episcopal Church - Fredericksburg, Virginia" by Carroll H. Quenzel. (Saunders & Son, Richmond, VA., 1951, 124 pp.) "St. George's Cemetery: A Sketch Prepared in the Interest of the Ladies Cemetery Guild of St. George's Church, Fredericksburg, Virginia; and Containing a List of Burials in St. George's Cemetery" by William Meade Clark. (Fredericksburg, VA, n.p., 1892, 12 pp.) "The History of the City of Fredericksburg, Va" by S.J. Quinn. (Richmond, Va., The Hermitage Press, 1908, 349 pp.) Note: All sources are available from the Central Rappahannock Regional Library (Main Library), Virginiana Room, in Fredericksburg, VA. No material may be checked out from that portion of the library. In the late 1840s, it was decided to expand the size of the church. While the construction was going on some graves were probably removed/ relocated/or build over. This may have occurred earlier (ca 1815) when the current Faulkner Hall was added to the lot. In 1959 the Church added McGuire Hall. At that time some of the graves had to be moved to allow construction on the site. Rev Charles Sydnor, Rector in 1999, stated that he believes some were only dirt as the wooden coffins had rotted away. Ones that could be moved were. It is generally believed that none were removed from the cemetery. Numbers next to the name indicate grave number associated with the accompanying map. A "U" indicates that the grave was unlocated in 2000. While compiling this record, I also searched the following sources for information. Information based on these will be given at the end of each entry with a number indicating the source. 1. Knorr, Catherine. The Historical Sketch of 1892 suggests that the headstone was broken during the Civil War. In 1999 there is a broken stone next to the outside door to the library - on the southeast corner of the church under the Nave - with the following inscription: 1807 N.R. 1802 It is a hard stone, not slate or sandstone, so who is next to the Rothrock stone? My bet it that it is the FOOTER for the inscription below (George & Nancy Richardson as he died in 1807 and she died in 1802). The odds of TWO sets of family members having the SAME initials and the SAME death dates is astronomical in a cemetery with only a hundred-odd graves. It also makes sense from the Rothrock standpoint. In Quinn's book there is a photo of the Rothrock marker. It shows the cemetery wall just behind the marker. The Richardson marker IS just in front of the wall and there is a space next to it where the Rothrock marker could have been! Perhaps later the FOOTER for the Richardsons was moved to over by John Pearson. For a photo see: Quinn: History of Fredericksburg, Va. pg. 264. Historical Sketch says that this stone was adjacent to that of John B. Pearson. That stone is deteriorating but still legible (1999), so it may be surmised the location of Rothrock's grave - which is on the other side of the cemetery from the other Rothrock family members. Since it starts with "Also", it is also surmised that someone else is buried here, perhaps a mother, father, or sibling. Photo in Quinn places the headstone up by the street with the brick wall directly behind it which corresponds to the location as discussed under the Richardsons. Fielding Lewis (husband of Betty Washington) is NOT buried under the church steps. He died on his son's plantation in northern Virginia and the likelihood of having his body returned to Fredericksburg is remote. No contemporary records indicate this. The current church was built some 68 years after he died. The best estimate of his burial location is on his son's plantation in Frederick Co (current Clarke Co.), Va. There is NO marked grave, but he was visiting his son when he died unexpectedly and usually you were buried close to where you died as embalming was not the practice. There may be A Fielding Lewis buried at St. George's, but who he was (if at all) is still a mystery in 1999. As to Fielding's 3 children, he did have 3 children who died as infants and are possibly buried at the church, but there is no definitive record. MEMORIALS In addition to the cemetery, St. George's is filled with many memorials for parishioners long past.
