21 January 1834.
Giles County Virginia. 21 January 1834
Dear brother
We had the happiness of receiving your letter on the 5 january dated on the 1. december 1833 and I was very Sorry
to hear of the misfortunes of that Country which I fear is very great and relates to Sickness which may shortly prove
fatal to a great many of the inhabitance in that part of the world and as Sickness is truly the most distressing and
painful Situation in Live and on the other hand wwe must acknowledge that health is Lifes Choicest blessing and as I
am of opinion that you are rather inclined to a weakly Constitution I do therefore entreat you to return home Shortly
to the place of your nativity to inhale the pure and healthful air of virginia and I am of opinion that you ought to Start
for home in the Latter part of the winter or in the forepart of the Spring without fail as you have had one attack of the
diseases of that Country you will be a most Shure to take it again when ever the warm weather Sets in in the Spring
of the year as I am apprehensive if you Stay any Longer you will be detained by Sickness wither in the St. Joseph
Country or on your way home as you have to travel through the State of indiana and Ohio. if you are blessed with
health and good Luck you Can Certainly follow Some occupation in virginia whereby you can make a Living then I
wish you not to delay any Longer time than to settle of your business and to prepare for to start home. through the
blessings of God the family are all well excepting myself father and mother. as to myself I have still a misery in my
Left Side and father Complains of his knee hurting him at times and mother is still afflicted with a very distressing

plantation a Little distance below uncle David Johnstons on the same side of the river were he is now living. as you
wish to know respecting the Stares or meteors being seen in our part of the world they were Seen. We seen them at
fathers supposed to have Commenced between midnight and day on the 13 morning of november Last and as far as I
Can Learn they were Seen in different parts of the world by numbers of people. they had the appearance of Stares to
us. They did not appear to desend in a perpendicular direction but rather inclined a S. W. Course and they appeared
to dart with a Swiftness and many of them Seemed to Leave a Streak of Light after them and they Seemed to come in
great quantities Continually descending out of the atmosphere in that way it is seed untill day. Mr. James Johnston is
