NAME: Virginia A. Duncan, age 82 years (Jan. 28, 1849), widow of Wm. Kyle Duncan who died Sept. 5, 1928; married on March 20, 1878 by Rev. James Dauthat. Resided with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Croy. Comrade of husband: James Meredith GILES COUNTY, VA (Hoges Store) MEMBER OF: See letter to County Clerk below: **The undersigned James Meredith having been duly sworn before me deposeth and says, that he was born in Giles County, VA on March 17, 1847, that in March 1865, both he and William K. Duncan appeared before an army officer of the Confederate states and inlisted in the service of the Confederacy, and were granted fifteen days leave of absence before joining the army. When the fifteen days were expire, both he and the said William K. Duncan, left home together from what is now called Hoge Store and proceeded as far as the top of Brush mountain in Montgomery County VA at which place we met scar soldiers returning home from the war saying that the war was about over and advised us to return home which we did. This was about the last of March 1865. William Duncan and myself were raised colse together and I knew him well and saw him often untile the time of his death. I also have know Mrs. Duncan all her life and know the facts as she states to be true. March 21, 1931 Signed: James Meredith.
