NAME: James W. Meredith, 82 yrs. 5 mos. as of Sept. 1929, farmer, enrolled March 25, 1865, was on furlough and was told the war was over when he was on his way to serve. He returned home. Consequently, the war dept. found no record of his enlistment. He was denied a pension, but the County Clerk interceded in his behalf. **Transcriber cannot read the documents as the typed words have gaps in them.** Meredith swore before Sibold, a Justice, tthat he had his name put on the roster for that company, along with a Mr. Duncan. Bernard Mason, an attorney in Pearlsburg, also appealed to Comptroller Coombs for granting a pension. Virginia Duncan, widow of William Duncan testified to the facts stated. Finally, F. E. Snidow, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Giles County verified that Meredith was registered at Pembroke Precinct and was exempt from Poll tax which proved that he was recognized as a Confederate soldier. Gives his birth date as March 17, 1847. Evidently, Meredith was given a pension, as was his wife, Ann Hutchison Meredith. GILES COUNTY, VA (Pembroke) MEMBER OF: 21st VA Cavalry, Company D.
