NAME: Mrs. L. J. Shelton, age 68 as of 1917, widow of Wm. J. Shelton who died on Jan. 12, 1917; married Dec. 17, 1867 by Rev. ? at White Gate; resided with her son, L. J. Shelton GILES COUNTY, VA--Pearisburg MEMBER OF: 36th VA Regt., Company I ***Letter from Pension Clerk to Mrs.Shelton dated Aug, 23, 1917 stated that her claim was disallowed based on an unfavorable report from the War Dept. in Washington, D. C. Requested evidence that would disprove the report. ***F. E. Snidow, County Clerk of Giles Co., wrote to Pension Clerk, Jno. H. Johnson, on Aug. 28th, 1917, saying that he had talked to several of husband's comrades who claimed he was a loyal and excellent soldier, as well as a true soldier. Snidow then requested the nature of the charges be made known to him in order that he clear up the matter. **Sept. 17, 1917--answer from the Pension Clerk Johnson that the War Dept. had Shelton as deserting Dec. 22, 1864. ***Jan. 23, 1920--Once again, Pension Clerk disallowed claim since he had researched W. J. Shelton's records in Confederacy files and nothing had changed. ***Letter from Snidow to Jno. Johnson dated Feb. 18, 1922: Dear Sir: I was in your office on the 31stday of Jan., 1922, and took up with you personally the matter of allowance of pension to Mrs. L. J. Shelton of Pearisburg, VA., and filed certain affidavits of comrades of her late husband, WIlliam J. Shelton, supporting her claim. As a result of the interview you did not hold out much encouragement for the allowance of anything, in as much as Mrs. Shelton had departed this life on the 11th day of last December. You recall her claim was first filed in 1917 and due to an adverse report from the War Department, the claim was disallowed, and it was to refute the report from the War Dept. that I filed the affidavits. On the 10th day of Feby. you drew a draft on the treasurer of VA payable to Mrs. Shelton for the sum of $60.00 and her daughters receiving the check came to me to know what to do tor the same. I do not understand the check as I explained to you that Mrs. Shelton had died in Dec. , after the affidavits had been prepared. I have taken the view that this is a case in which the Administrator of Mrs. Sheldon should draw the amount that should have been paid her during the years since claim was first filed. Since Mrs. Shelton has been put on the roll, of course, the administrator would be entitled to the funeral expenses? I truly hope that there will be some way by which Mrs. Shelton's daughters may collect the amount that should have been paid to her during her life time. Yours very truly ***Unfortunately, transcriber could not decipher typed copy on remaining documents since letters typed had gaps that were unreadable.
