GILES COUNTY VA PENSION APPLICATION: SKEENS, HENRY S. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright. NAME: Henry S. Skeens, age 85 as of 1933, farmer, resided with son, James Skeens. Records from war department show that he deserted, but a letter found in files from J. Arthur Adair attests that he was a scout and carried the mail. It was his Uncle Alex that had deserted. It is to be noted that Henry A. Skeens, his uncle, was the deserter, not Henry Sanford Skeens (known as Sanford to the residents.) The war department conceded that there may have been a mistake in the middle initial. A check with library files confirmed that Henry S. Skeens did serve and did not desert. Affidavits attesting to Henry S. Skeen's service and confusion with Henry A. Skeens were sent to pension clerk from F. E. Snidow, whereupon the confusion with Henry A. and Henry S. Skeens was settled.
