White, age 75 in 1912, farming GILES COUNTY, VA--Pembroke MEMBER OF: 24th VA Regt., Company F. **Letter from the Pension Clerk saying in May, 1919, that they had received a bad report and asked if he could give the circumstance of his soldier-ship, and about Petersburg or City Point and if he had any recollection of being a prisoner of war, and being sent to Washington. In a sworn statement, White's reply is as follows: Dear Sir: In answere to your inquiry May 2 as to my soldier ship in the latter part of the war in and about Petersburg. I was in 24 Virginia regiment C. F Terry's Brigade Picket's Division Long Street Core Army of Northern Virginia. Part of my division was between Petersburg and richmond, the other was at the right of Petersburg when we started to fall back. The Division got together. Then we went in direction of Five Forks, by me being wonded they put me in quartermaster department, a helper so I could ride in the wagons. Between Five Forks and Appomattox Court House about 300 of us was took prison and carried to Washington, reached there on the 11 day of April next morning we were told that General Lee had surrended we could be released if we would take the oath of Aggegian, and be true to our country or go to prison in Elmire, NY so we took the oath. If you need any other information as to my soldier ship let me know as ther are several of my Company living yet. Signed: Yours Truly C. T. White.
