NAME: G. F. Williams, age 72 in 1920, farmer GILES COUNTY, VA--Berton MEMBER OF: Lowry's Regt, **War Dept. records replied that his name appeared as a rebel deserter who took the Oath of amnesty in Tennessee in 1864 and asked if he was the same George Williams, company A, 29th North Carolina Command. Response to the War Department from G. F. Williams said he was not., and had never been in NC or Tennessee. **War Dept. then answered that they did not understand how George Williams and G. F. Williams could be that coincidental in that G. F. Williams listed his Col. as Lowry and that was who George Williams served under; then asked for reliable sources to dispel the information. They suggested that comrades, D. J. Grey and I. S. Williams, make sworn statements to help his claim. After comrades made statements (which are unreadable for transcriber), the War Dept. disallowed claim because income of $200 was too much. **Letter from Williams stated that he did not make $100 a year; **transcriber could not read the letters from comrades for details on Regt. and Company. Evidently, the claim was allowed.
