Now sitting William Neel a resident of Giles County and state of Virginia, aged 71 years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. He declares that about the year 1777 or 1778 he entered the service as a volunteer from the county of Augusta and state of Virginia, in a company of rangers commanded by Capt. Samuel Vance intended for the protection of the frontier against the Indians. The applicant does not exactly recollect the length of time that this embraced, but thinks it did not exceed 6 or 7 months. But is confident he remained until the expiration of the term of service and distinctly recollects that the company was discharged after a heavy fall of snow, when the people in the stations returned to their families. He was stationed at Warricks staion at the head of Greenbrier river and at the Clover Lick station at which later he was discharged. In the year 1780 (as he thinks) he went as a volunteer from Augusta County, Virginia with a company under the command of Capt. Buchannan in company with two other companies commanded by Captain Tate and Gilmore from the state of North Carolina and joined General Morgan at Six Mile Creek. In North Carolina he joined Capt. Carmichaels company of Virginia militia- but the Captain became sick and the company was then commanded by Capt. David Guzman and was under his command at Guilford Courthouse under General Green and Major Rowland, the latter of whom commanded a scouting party to which the applicant was attached and employed in the arduous duty against both the British forces and the Tories and was successful in taking some Tory and British prisoners. Col. Lee commanded the cavalry and Genl. Campbell and Williams were also there. After this he was transferred to a company commanded by Capt. May and with it marched through Richmond and Williamsburg to Yorktown in Virginia and had the pleasure of being in the army until the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. He was born in Lancaster, Penn., he now resides in Giles and has resided here for 38 years. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to any pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension role of any agent in any state or territory whatsoever. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. Wm.
