He was born Oct. 25, 1918, at White Gate, the son of the late John Marvin and Nellie Hamilton Whittaker. Also, he was preceded in death by his wife, June Galliher Whittaker. He was a longtime merchant (Whittaker's Grocery and Garage) and farmer at White Gate. He was a charter member of the White Gate Ruritan Club and was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bill Faris, Glade Spring; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Carol Whittaker, White Gate; a sister, Josephine W. Waller, New London, N.C.; brother-in-law, John Bernard and wife Elsie Galliher, Roanoke; two grandsons: Mark and wife, Stephanie Faris, Glade Spring; and Glenn and wife Karen Faris, Glade Spring; three great-grandchildren, Austin Glenn Faris, Lance Allen Faris, Baileigh Parker Faris; two step-great- grandchildren, Paiten and Megan; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Donald White officiating. Interment will be in the Stinson Cemetery, White Gate. Pallbearers will be Jeff and Craig Whittaker, Glenn and Mark Faris and Tommy and Johnny Waller. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Tauro, Dr. Booker, Bill V. Breedlove, Loyd Bocock, Harold Rose, Owen Hershberger and many special friends. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the Mt. Zion UMC Building Fund. Visiting will be at the funeral home Friday after 1 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
