March 23, 1806 Educated under John Randolph of Roanoke Midshipman in U.S.Navy 1823 - 1831 Married Elizabeth Tucker Coalter January 30th, 1830 Resided here 1831 - 1862 Died at the University of Virginia September 13th, 1887 Strong in body, mind and convictions: Inflexible in Integrity: A Patriot in Peace and War: A Friend of the poor. He early joined the Church at Abington, And was for fifty years An earnest follower of Christ And for all His mercies by Sea and Land He blessed and praised God To his life's end. This Stone Is Erected in Memory of ELIZABETH TUCKER BRYAN Daughter of John Coalter, Esq and wife of John R. Bryan Who departed this life March 28, 1856 in the 51st year of her age Gentleness, goodness and faith adorned her life and her end was peace and joy in the HOLY GHOST Near her rest her children Virginia Mackay who died an infant Nov 20, 1839 Thomas Forman who died Sept 8, 1851 in his 4th year and John Coalter, M.D. who died greatly lamented June 1, 1853 in the 23rd year of his age The above stones were constructed into the wall. B. & E. T. Bryan Born Chatham by Fredericksburg October 23, 1843 Died In Hanover County near Richmond April 5th, 1916 Private in 2nd Co. Richmond Howitzers First Regiment Virginia Artillery 1861-65 A fearless soldier devoted to the South An ever steadfast upholder of its cause A Christian sincere, humble, devout; chivalrous, unselfish, compassionate. A lover of nature, of beauty, of science; beloved of many in all conditions of life industrious, self-denying, generous. His joy and most prized reward was to help others and to gladden the hearts of the lowly, the poor, the afflicted. He was a master in that kindly art. In his vast world above a world of broader love Some grand employment for his son.
