Williams Epitaphs, as typed on sheets in a folder located inside the Graveyard 1 Mary Warner Ye wife of Augus- tine Warner Esq. was born 15th of May 1614 and died ye 11th day of August 1662 Here lies entombed ye phoenix of her time Whose rare virtues _________________ dyne __________________ yet we cannot say Tho dead, ye phoenix ever dyes away 2 Augustine Warner Deceased ye 24th of December 1674 Aged 63 years 2 Mth 26 Da Tho dead whilest most men live he cannot dy His name will live fresh in their memory True worth is highly shown in living well when future ages of his praise shall tell 3 Here Lyeth the body of Coll Augustine Warner who was born ye 3rd of June 1642 and Died ye 19th of June 1681 4 Illegible but probably Mildred (Reade) Warner 5 Here lyeth interred Augustine Warner son of Coll Augustine & Mildred Warner, born ye 17th of January 1666/7, and deceased ye 17th of March 1686/7 6 Here lyeth interr'd ye body of Elizabeth Lewis the daughter of Col Augustine Warner and Mildred his wife and late wife of John Lewis Esq. She was born at Chesake the 24th of November 1672 Aged 47 years 2 months and 32 days and was a tender Mother of 14 children. She Departed this life the 5th Day of February 1719/20 7 Here lyeth interred The body of Coll John Lewis Son of John and Isabella Lewis and one of his Majestys Honble Council for this colony who was born ye 30th of November 1669 & departed this life on ye 14th November 1725 8 Mary Lewis first Wife of Warner Lewis Esq. Daughter of John Chriswell of Williamsburg And Elizabeth Randolph daughter of William Randolph Esq. of Turkey Island Died the 1st of November 1776 Aged 28 Years 9 Warner Lewis Eldest son of Warner Lewis Esq. and Eleanor Gooch Widow of William Gooch Esq. and Daughter of James Bowles Esq. of Maryland Died the 30th of December 1791 Aged 44 years 10 Here Lies the Remains of Juliana Clayton ye only Daughter of Thomas Clayton and Isabella his Wife She was born May ye 17th 1731 * * * * * * * * ye 12th of May 1734 * * * * * 11 Here sleeps the body of Isabella Clayton While her Soul is gone in triumph to meet the best of husbands and never more to be divorced by him to be taught to Sing Eternal Praises of God and ye Lamb For ever (1707 - 1742) 12 (Translation) Here beneath are the remains, his own, of Doctor (?) Thomas Clayton, Bachelor of Medicine, youngest son of John Clayton, Esquire formerly graduate of Pembroke Collage, Cambridge, who broken by the zealous pursuit and toil of his profession, after he had reached the thirty-eighth year of his age, on the seventeenth day of October in the seventeen hundred and thirty-ninth year of our salvation after Christ fell asleep in the Lord devoutly and sweetly, whose most loyal wife Isabel has set up most devotedly with copious tears this marble as her last service. Here reader, you will see no stately column standing, nor blocks of stone bidden to come alive by the hand of the artist, nor pyra- mids rising in lofty mass made equal by skill to those in the plains of Isis.
