GREENE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Dowell Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Old Dowell graveyard: 1936 May 16 Research made by Mary C. Dean Cemetery Location: 12 miles northwest of Charlottesville, Virginia, on Route #29 Greene County DATE: Unknown. OWNERS: This ancient burial ground once a part of the estate of John Dowell, who received his land as a royal grant from King George II., is now on the farm owned by Mr. Lucien Herring, Proffit, Virginia, who married a great-great- granddaughter of John Dowell. DESCRIPTION: This little plot of land is neglected, the graves sunken in and the headstones are almost obliterated. The rock wall with which it was once enclosed has disappeared; even the rocks themselves have gone. One sees only a small piece of ground with many rocks about three or four inches high, protruding here and there and midway a weathered stone apparently set up as a dividing sign. It is thought that this stone may have been placed there to mark the grave of the family from those of their negro slaves. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Lucy Dowell Marshall, is the oldest surviving member of the family in Virginia, and is therefore, the only one who knows anything definite about the burial ground. She could give only the following information. John Dowell and his wife Annie Franklin Dowell who was a niece of Benjamin Franklin, a Mrs. Taylor who is thought to be a connection of the family, and Saline a sister of Samuel Dowell and granddaughter of John Dowell, are buried here. Mrs. Marshall thinks slaves are also buried here and that there are other graves but says she has no definite information. Unfortunately there are no inscriptions in the graveyard and no known record. There are in Virginia no male descendants of John Dowell who bears the name of Dowell. There is only one such female descendant, Miss Rosalyn Dowell of Charlottesville, Virginia, who is a great-great-great-granddaughter of John Dowell. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: Mrs. Robert A.
