GREENE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Monroe Grave ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Burial place of Mr. William Monroe: 1936 Oct. 9 Research made by Mary Dean Cemetery Location: Mr. Chapman’s farm 3 miles from Stanardsville, Virginia, on Swift Run Road. Greene County DATE: Unknown. OWNERS: Mr. John S. Chapman. DESCRIPTION: (blank) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The man who according to local traditions and Scott’s History of Orange County is buried on the farm of Mr. John S. Chapman, a lawyer of Stanardsville, was probably the most famous citizen of Greene County. He is also the one about whom the least is known or can be learned. Even the exact spot where he is buried is unknown. He is due everlasting respect in Greene because of the fund which he left to educate the poor children of his county. As Greene was then a part of Orange County, this fund originally helped to educate many children of indigent parents in Orange county. When the county was divided Greene alone retained the fund, although a legal effort was made to have it divided. For years, although the county used the fund annually and still uses it to supplement its county school funds, no effort was made to mark the grave of its benefactor or to learn anything about his life. Now very little can be learned. Tardy recognition was made about ten years ago when the new high school building at Stanardsville was named the Monroe High School.
