Greene Co., VA - GREENE COUNTY IN THE CIVIL WAR Hardesty’s Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia (Illustrated), 1884, Special VA Edition, R. A. Brock, H. H. Hardesty & CO, NY, Richmond, Chicago, and Toledo. (page 399 of Hardesty's) The majority of the residents of Greene county warmly approved of the course of Virginia in withdrawing from the Federal government and associating her fortunes with those of sister Southern States. There were those who differed from the general decision, however, and many of these, refusing to serve in the Confederate States army, associated themselves with those similar feeling in Rockingham county, and from these two counties was formed a battalion, from 300 to 400 strong. These man, armed and equipped for defense, fortified themselves in what is known as Hensley Hollow, and defied the newly formed government. In April, 1862, two companies from Stonewall Jackson’s command, under Captain L. B. McMullan and Captain Naderbush, were sent to break up the camp, which they effectually accomplished, capturing the most of the battalion and scattering the remainder, returning to their regiments about April 20th. The mountaineous (sic) regions of Greene county were favorite hiding places for deserters during the war, and the Union sentiment among the disaffected residents of the county made these places of refuge comparatively (sic) secure. Many depredations upon the property of citizens were committed by them, and there was often loss of life on both sides, when parties of soldiers were sent to capture them and bring them back to service. There was no fighting in the county except this, nor was the county on the direct line of either army during the constant marching for four years over the devoted soil of Virginia. General Matcher’s command passed through the county in 1864, and foraged for their stock, but did not otherwise disturb the inhabitants. Company F of the 7th Virginia regiment (the regimental record is given on a preceding page, of Albemarle county) was raised in this county, and many of the citizens went out in Company D, of the 34th Infantry, and in other service.
