Gay, one of the oldest citizens of Greensville County, died Sunday morning last at the home of his son, Mr. N.E. Gay, near Brink. The deceased was born about the year 1826 [sic] and consequently was in his eighty-fourth year. During his long life he has seen many changes take place in this country and Greensville County had been formed only a little over thirty years. He was a farmer and spent most of his long life in the county and for many years was a familiar figure on the streets of Emporia. The remains were taken to the Emporia cemetery for interment on Monday, Rev. J.W. Heckman conducting the burial services. Joseph Wilson GAY, farmer, Confederate veteran*, b. Jan 1828, Southampton Co., d. 1910, at son's home, near Brink, Greensville Co., interred in Emporia Cemetery, donated obit, publication unknown, posted with Find a Grave Mem. #112290507 by buck ivey *Joseph was drafted, enlisting 11 Oct 1864 at Hicksford (now Emporia), in Co. D, 12th VA Infantry, CSA. He served 7 months, and surrendered with LEE at Appomattox C.H. He applied for a pension 21 Nov 1902. He m. "Lucy" Lusetta Caroline LANIER 1 Sep 1859 in Sussex Co.
