All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOSEPH ELLIOTT WHITEHEAD Word has been received here of the death of Joseph Elliott (Dick) Whitehead at his home in Emporia on January 3 after a long illness. He was a resident of Franklin for twelve years, moving from here to Emporia eight years ago. He was born at the old Whitehead home on Assamoosic Creek in Southampton County on September 8, 1884, the son of the late James T. and Mary Jordan Whitehead. On March 28, 1911, he married Miss Kate Wyatt Newsome of Emporia, who survives him with one daughter, Miss Alma Whitehead. He is also survived by two brothers, H.L. Whitehead of the Black Creek community and R.F. Whitehead of Emporia; five nieces, Mrs. S. Hassett of Franklin, Mrs. Jack Bowles, Mrs. James O. Eldridge and Mrs. C.L. Jinnette of Richmond and Miss Mina Whitehead of Emporia; two nephews, Linwood and McNeill Whitehead of Emporia; and a wide family connection. Mr. Whitehead was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church, a man of many fine traits of character and numbered many friends here. Funeral services were conducted from the residence Tuesday afternoon, January 4, by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. Carroll Freeman of the North Emporia Methodist Church and the Rev. J.W. Kinchloe of the Calvary Baptist Church. The hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross," "Have Thine Own Way, Lord" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," were sung by the Taylor Quartet. Interment was in the Emporia Cemetery, the services at the grave being conducted by Eureka Camp No. 287, Woodmen of the World, of which Mr. Whitehead was a member.
