The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net *********************************************************************** Greensville Co., VA, Will Book 1, pp. 307-10 dtd: 12 Jul 1795; rec: Oct 1795 abstracted by Matt HARRIS [surname capitalization, line breaks, & brackets mine] In the Name of God Amen I Henry CHAMBLISS of the County of Greensville make this to be my last will and Testament in form following, Viz. 1.st I lend to my wife Lucy CHAMBLISS during her natural life or widowhood the tract of Lands and premises whereon I live but if she should marry then I lend to her one third part of my Land to be laid off in such form as for my wife to have the Houses during her natural life. 2.nd I also lend to my wife aforementioned during her natural life the following articles viz" three negroes, Adam, Doll, and Flora~ (with their increase from this date) two feather beds and furniture her choice, one dish, two square Pine tables, Six Chairs, one Spinning wheel, two pair of Cotton Cards, one Loom, two setts of Slays & Harness (to be her choice) one large Pewter dish, one small D.o ['ditto'] two large Basons, two small d.o six pewter plates, one half dozen of table & tea spoons; half dozen of Cups and Saucers, one tea & milk pott, one sugar dish, one large and one small Queens China dishes, four plates of the same ware, one large and one small Iron potts, one good Frying Pann, two washing tubbs, one water pail, and one pigging, one large and one small stone Juggs (her choice) one small case and the bottles, two tight Hh'ds, Six Cyder Casks, Two [page break] [p.] (308.) Two powdering tubs, and two brandy barrels, one pair flat Irons, one meal barrel, one sifter, three hundred pounds of seed Cotton, one half the wool, one half dozen of Knives and forks, one flax wheel, one flax hackle, two pair of fire doggs, one flax brake, one close bodied and one carry logg carts, her choice of Cart wheels, two setts of Gear for ploughing, two pair of Harnes for Cart, and one pair of long and one pair of short traces, two sides of soal and two sides of upper Leather, one pepper box, one Ink stand, two sheep skins, one coffee Mill, two narrow, and one broad axes, a sett of Augars and Chizzels Viz, one, one & quarter Inch Augar, and one, one Inch, One three quarters and one half Inch, one, one Inch Chizzel, and one half Inch, one Gouge, one drawing Knife, one ccoarse handsaw, three broad, three narrow, one Grubbing, and two plough hoes (her choice) one half shear [?],one pair of Iron wedges her choice) one bay mare with foal, known by the name of Janus, five head of sheep; Viz. four Ewes and one ram, two Cows and yearlings or calves, one heifer one youngster, eight head of Hogs and two sows and piggs (to be her choice) eleven head of Geese, one woman's saddle and bridle, one claw Hammer, one bread tray (the best) two reaps hooks and one Sythe (her choice) and her choice of the men's saddles (my riding saddle excepted) fifteen Bushels of wheat, thirty Barrels of Corn, fifteen bushels of Oats, four stacks of blades, and fifty feet of tops, the Shocks of thirty barrels of Corn, one glass tumbler, and four Bushells of salt, and at her death to be divided as my will shall hereafter direct [note: item below erroneously numered "2.nd"; subsequent items follow error] 2.nd My Will and desire is that the remainder of my Estate (my Land and the part lent to my wife excepted) be divided in seventeen shares of which amount each shall take their shares in the following manner, Viz. (out of the share of William CHAMBLISS shall be deducted ten pounds, ten shillings and six pence; out of the share of Mary GREEN wife of Jessee shall be deducted fourteen pounds, one shilling and six pence; out of the share of Aggy GREEN, nine pounds fourteen shillings and six pence, which several sums make thirty four Pounds, six shillings and six [page break] [p.] 309.) six pence, which is to be divided between Bolling, Allen, Henry, Mark, James, Beckey, Lewis, John, Jenney, Salley, Frankey, Betsey, and Priscilla CHAMBLISS:) and that my Grand-daughter Patsey CHAMBLESS) daughter of my son David CHAMBLISS have one half of a seventeenth share, and the ballance to be equally divided between William CHAMBLISS, Mary GREEN, Bolling, Allen and Henry CHAMBLISS, Aggy GREEN, Mark, James, Beckey, Lewis, John, Jenney, Sally, Frankey, Betsey, and Priscilla CHAMBLISS to them and their heirs or assigns forever~ 3.rd My Will and desire is that after the death of my wife that the part of my Estate lent to her together with my Land be sold, and equally divided between all my Children, allowing Patsey CHAMBLESS (my Grand-daughter) of my son David, one half share to them and their heirs or assigns forever~ 4.th It is my will and desire that my wife Lucy have the Profits arising from the parts or portion that may be allotted to my following Children, Viz. Jenny, Salley, Frankey, Betsey, and Priscilla CHAMBLISS, untill they arrive to the age of twenty one years or marries at which stated periods they or either of them be entitled to receive their shares or portions, my said wife maintaining, cloathing, and educating my children in this clause mentioned. But if my wife Lucy should marry that she then be no longer entitled to the profits of the Estate of my children above named, but that they immediately possess the same~ 5.th My will is that my Estate be not appraised~ 6.thly I do hereby nominate and appoint my wife Lucey CHAMBLISS, my Sons, William, Bolling, Allen, Henry, and Mark, and Heartwell RAINES, Executrix, and Executors to this my last will~ Witness, my hand and seal this twelfth day of July 1795~ Henry CHAMBLISS (LS) Signed, Sealed & acknowledged in presence of } David HIGH + his mark Person WILLIAMSON George WOODRUFF W his Mark [page break] [p.] (310.) At Greensville County Court October 1795~ This Will was proved according to Law by the oaths of David HIGH and Person WILLIAMSON witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded~ Lucy CHAMBLISS, William, Bolling, Allen, Henry, and Mark CHAMBLISS the Executors personally appeared in Court; and refursed to take upon themselves the burthen of the execution thereof as Executors. But on the motion of the said Lucy, William and Allen CHAMBLISS who made oath thereto according to Law, and together with, Bolling CHAMBLISS, Henry CHAMBLISS, and Mark CHAMBLISS, their securities entered into, and acknowledged their bond, in the penalty of ten thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, Certificate was granted them for obtaining Letters of administration with the Will annexed in due form.
