These electronic pages cannot be reproduced in any format for profit or other presentation. ---------------------------------------------- Will of Lewis Grigg In the Name of One Almight and Eternal being who Created the World by the Words of his power and Governs it by the unerring dictates of his wisdom I Lewis Grigg of Saint Andrews Parish in the County of Greensville being sick but of a sound Mind and disposing memory but not knowing how soon it may be otherways Do make Constitute and Ordain this to be my Last Will & Testament First I commit my soul into the hands of my most mercifull Creator hoping for Salvation through the Merits of my Saviour and my Body to its Mother Earth to be buried at the discretion of my Executors Jesse Grigg and Lewis Grigg my Sons whom I appoint to this my Last Will and Testament and then as for my Worldly Estate I desire and dispose of as follows Viz. I lend unto my Beloved wife Sarah Grigg the plantation whereon I now live with two Negroes namely Bess and Bet with all my Stock of Horses, Cattle, Sheep and Hogs with all my Household and Kitchen furniture with the Crop now on the said Plantation during her Natural Life. I Give and desire unto my Son Jesse Grigg One hundred Acres of Land it being a part, apart of the Land whereon I now live and that part that joins the Tract he purchased of Lewis Lanier to him and his heirs forever. I Give and desire unto my Son Lewis Grigg the remainder part of this Tract of Land whereon I now live adjoining John Barlow and James Eppes, after the Death of my Wife Sarah Grigg to him and heirs forever. And as to the remainder of my Estate as yet not given away After the Death of my wife Sarah Grigg my desire is that it be equally divided between my two Sons Jesse Grigg and Lewis Grigg only the half of Bess and Bet to them and their Heirs forever. Item I lend unto my Daughter Martha Blanks a fourth part of the Value of Bess and Bet during her natural Life After the Death of my Wife Sarah Grigg. I give and desire unto my Grand Daughter Patsy Hazelwood a fourth part of Bess and Bet after the Death of my Wife Sarah Grigg to her and her Heirs forever. My desire is that two indifferent persons should value Bess and Bet at the Death of my Wife Sarah Grigg and that Jesse Grigg and Lewis Grigg should pay unto Martha Blanks one fourth of the valuation thereof. And that the said Jesse Grigg and Lewis Grigg should pay to Martha Hazelwood a fourth part of the value of Bess and Bet at the Death of my Wife. And Lastly I acknowledge this to be my last Will and Testament Revoking all former Wills and bequests by me made. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifth day of August One thousand seven hundred and eight four. Signed by Lewis Grigg (L.S.). At a Court held for Greensville County the 25th day of October 1787 This Will was proved according to law by the Witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. January Court 1804 Lewis Grigg qualified as Executor see endorsed on the original Will. Will Book 1, page 112, Greensville County, Virginia __________ Will of Frederick Grigg In the name of God Amen I Frederick Grigg of Greensville County being of sound mind thanks to Almighty God for the same do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following First I recommend my Soul to God who gave it me and my Body to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Excutor hereafter named and as touching such Worldly Goods as it hath pleased to bless me with, I dsipose thereof in the following manner vizt. Imprimis I give & bequeath to my Son William Grigg all that he hath of mine in his possession to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Son Randolph Grigg all the Land I purchased of James Blanks (on Jack's Branch supposed to contain Two hundred and fifty one Acres more or less) reserving to my wife the use of one field (on Jack's Branch) and Timber to support her family during her life; I also give my said Son one Negro Woman named Dilce and her two Children Marcia and Sterling with their future increase, one Bed and furniture, two young Oxen, and two Cows, to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Stuart one negro Woman Amy and her child Mary with their future increase, one Bed and furniture and one Chest, supposed to be worth ninety pounds to her and her heirs forever. Item I leave to my loving Wife Martha Grigg the use of all the rest and residue of my Estate of what kind soever during her life. Item and at her death I give and bequeath to my George Grigg all the Land and Plantation whereon she now lives to him and his heirs forever. And at the death of my wife my will and desire is that all the rest that I have left her the use of may be sold and the money arising from such sale may be equally divided amongst my seven Children Mary F., Nancy, Prissa W., George, Patsy, Lucinda, and Elizabeth So that the said Elizabeth shall allow nienty pounds out of her share which is given her in advance above, to them and their heirs forever. Item and lastly I constitute and appoint my loving wife Martha Grigg Extx. and my two Sons William and Randolph Executors of this my last Will In witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and seal this first Day of January Eighteen Hundred and Five. Signed Frederick Grigg (L.S.) Sealed and delivered in presence of Robert Jones, Shadrach Bailey and Edward Whitehorn. Greensville April Court 1805. This Will was proved according to Law by Shadrach Bailey and Edward Whithorn witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded And on the motion of William Grigg and Randolph Grigg the Executors therein named who made Oath thereto and acknowledged Bond with approved Security as the Law directs Certificate was granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form. Will Book 1, page 539, Greensville County, Virginia ______ Will of Burrell Grigg In the Name of God Amen I Burrell Grigg of Greensville County do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say first of all all my just debts and funeral Expenses to be paid Item I give and bequeath to my Son Carril Grigg the Slaves Peter & [______] now in his possession with every of the kind of property heretofore given to him his heirs and assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter Susanna Eppes the Slaves now in her possession to wit Sarah & Abel Isaac Doll, Rhoda, Violet, Dilsey, Milly, Patience, Alford & Charles to her and her heirs and assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Son Edmund Grigg the following Negros Tom Lucy and Dinah to him and his heirs and assigns forever. I also give to my said Son Edmund Grigg my Land and Plantation lying in Dinwiddie County left to me by my Uncle Edward Mitchell the other part of said land whereon my said Uncle lived being left to Thomas Jones and since the death of said Jones [________] by his son Green Jones and myself in order to make an equal division between Jones and myself of which [ ] of said Land and plantation with the premises thereunto belonging provided he pay to his mother [ ] years to him his heirs and assigns forever. Item I give & bequeath to my Daughter Martha Williams three Negores to wit Fanny Sarah, and Lucy with every king of property heretofore given to her and her heirs and assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Adams two Negroes Nan & Lewis with every other kind of property heretofore given and now in her possession to her and heri heirs and assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter Mary Grigg three Negroes to wit Nell and her youngest Children vizt. Muse and Tom to her and her heirs and assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Susan Burrell Mabry three Negroes vizt. [ ] [ ] and [ ] provided she arrives to Lawful age [ ] to her and her heirs and assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Son Burrell Grigg when he arrives to the age of Twenty one years Three Negroes to wit Jim Judy and Peter. I also give to my son Burrell Grigg the Land and plantation had of Frederick Grigg [______ ] [_______ ] part of the tract on which I live to be taken of by a line to be begun at the mouth of a Samll branch known by the name of my Pond Branch thence up the said Branch to the head and thence straight line to the Corner of said Land John Barlow's and the Land whereon I now live to him and his heirs & assigns forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Son Mitchell Grigg three negroes to wit Gideon [______] & Frank when he arrives to the age of Twenty one years. I also give to my said Son Mitchell Grigg all the Remainder of my Lands in the County of Greensville after the death of his Mother to him and his heirs and assigns forever. Item I give to my loving wife Mary Grigg all my Lands in Greensville County during her Natural Life with the following Negroes to wit old Fredirk Stafford Ephraim Tom Charles Phib and George and also all that I have given to my two Sons Burrel Grigg & Mitchell Grigg untill they arive to the age of Twenty one years with my Stock of every kind household furniture and Plantation utensils she keeping [ ] and [ ] my two Sons Burrel & Mitchell and keeping that part of my Estate together during her Life; and lastly at the Death of my said Wife Mary Grigg all the remainder of my Estate of what nature or kind soever or wheresoever found I give in manner & form following to my Son Burrell Grigg one feather Bed and furniture and my Medley Colt to my Son Mitchell Grigg one feather Bead and furniture and my Dogfish Colt to my Daughter Mary Grigg one feather Bed and furniture to my Daughter Martha Williams one hundred Dollars, to my Daughter Elizabeth Adams one hundred Dollars hereby appointing my Sons Carrel Grigg, Edmund Grigg & Thomas Williams my Executors leaving it in their Power to Continue the Plantaion in Dinwiddie untill the same is paid for with the benefit of Jim and Gideon and the Remained of my Estate of every kind left to be equally divided betwixt my Children to wit Carril Grigg, Edmund Grigg Burrell Grigg, Mitchell Grigg, Mary Grigg, Martha Williams and Elizabeth Adams, to them and their heirs and assigns forever. And hereby revoking all other Wills or bequest by me heretofore made declaring this to be my only last Will and Testament this Twentieth Day of October 1800. Signed by Burrill Grigg (L.S.) Signed Sealed, Published and delcared by the Testator as his last Will in presence of us Jordin Richardson, Ingram Blanks, Andrew Kerwin. Greensville July Court 1808. This Will as proved according to law by the oaths of Jordin Richardson and Ingram Blanks witnesses thereto and ordered to be Recorded. And the Executors therein named refusing to qualify as such on the motion of Carrell Grigg (one of the said Executors) and Mitchell Grigg Certificate was granted them for obtaining Letters of Administration on the said Testators Estate with the Will annexed in due form they having made Oath thereto according to law and with Ingram Blanks, Robert U. Land and John Rives their Securities acknowledged their Bond in the Penalty of fifty thousand Dollars Conditioned as the Law Directs. Teste. E. Mason. CGC. Octo. Ct. 1808. Will Book 2, page 79, Greensville County, Virginia _______ Will of Carrill Grigg In the name of God Amen I Carrill Grigg of the County of Greensville and State of Virginia being of Sound mind thanks to God for the same do make and [ ] this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form as followeth first I commend my Soul to God who gave it me and my body to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named and touching such wordly Good as it hath pleased God to bless me with I dispose thereof in the following manner Vitz. First it is my Will and desire that my Lands be divided in three parts by the following lines one line to [______] straight course from a Mulberry Tree, [________] the place where Nicholas Blanks lived to a pine in the line of Charles H. Stewart near Walkers old Black Smiths Shop and near the road one other line to run from a white oak a corner of William Jarretts and thence straight to [_____] white oaks near the poplar swamp a corner trees with Lands of Wilkins Harper & Thomas Northcross. 2nd. [The tract of land where I presently live,] I lend unto my wife Martha Grigg during her natural live. 3rd. and at the death of my said wife it is my Will and desire [_________] Son Boling Grigg have he Land lent to my wife but if he should die without having lawful heir or heirs then it is my desire that the said Land should go to the rest of my Children. 4th. The middle part of my Land whereon my Son Richard B. Grigg lives it is my will and desire he shall have but if he should die without having lawful heir or heirs then it is my desire that the said Land should go to the rest of my Children. 5th. The lower part of my Lands called owens &c It is my will and desire that my Son Jesse Grigg have but if he should die without having lawful heir or heirs then it is my desire that the said land go to the rest of my children. 6th. It is my will and desire at my death that all my Negroes be equally divided between my wife and all my Children and if any of my Children should died before myself and leaving heir or heirs for them to take said Childs part and all that is of Lawful age of my Children at my Death to take their parts of the Negroes at the division and all that is under age for their parts of said Negroes to Continue with my wife for their Support and when any one that is under lawful age at my Death arrives to lawful age then for the Negroes that returned unto my wife to be equally divided again as at first and the Child that haw come of age to take its part and so to Continue untill all my Children has come of age and at the Death of my wife the Negroes that has been her part to be equally divided amongst all my Children. 7th. It is my will and desire that at my Death such part of my Stock and other Estate as my Executors think proper be sold to pay my Just Debts and funeral expenses and the balance be for my wife and Childrens support that has had no part of such Estate, and at the Death of my said wife it is my will and desire that the remainder of Stock Crop furniture &c be equally divided between my Children that have had no part of such of my Estate. and lastly I constitute and appoint my wife Martha Grigg Ex. and my friends Ingham Blanks James Blanks and Edmund Stewart Executors of this my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Twenty fifth day of September Eighteen hundred and Ten. At a Court held for Greensville County the 11th day of February 1811 This will was proved according to Law by the oath of the Witnesses thereto and ordered to be Recorded and on the Motion of Martha Grigg the Exor. therein named who made oath thereto and with James Blanks and Edwin Tyus her Securities entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the Penalty of fifty Thousand Dollars Continued as the law directs Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probat of the said will in due form.
