GREENSVILLE COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - John Smith, 27 Aug 1806 ----¤¤¤---- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I John Smith of the County of Greensville, being weak of body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God for the same, and calling to mind that it is appointed for man to die, do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form as followeth: I lend to my loving wife Nancy Smith the use of all my land and plantations now in my possession (together with that in the possession of my sister Sally Smith at her death or marriage) all my negros, stock of all kinds, crops of all kinds, household and kitchen furniture, one riding chair, cash &c and all my plantation utensils, though subject to a division to each one of my children as they arrive at such an age or marry as hereafter devised; provided my said wife will keep my children and raise them till they come of age or marry and school my three youngest, namely: Frances Ann, Hartwell and Littleson Smith without charge out of the profits arising from the above property during her natural life or widowhood. Item, I give and bequeath to my son David A. Smith to be? possessed of the same January the first one thousand eight hundred and ten, the land and plantation I had of my brother William Smith, one negro man named Charles, one hundred pounds current money of Virginia, one Bellair filley, four cows and calves, one yoke of steers and one bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca Batte? (Balle?) what I have before given her, viz: one negro man named Simon, one negro girl named Jenny, one bed and furniture, one chest, one trunk, three cows and calves, six head of sheep, one saddle and bridle, knives, forks, dishes, &c and one Jonah? colt which is now in my possession to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath to my son John Smith to be possessed of the same January one thousand eight hundred and fourteen, the plantation whereon my sister Sally Smith now lives, should she die or marry prior to that time, one negro man named Daniel (formerly William Smiths') one hundred pounds current money of Virginia, one buzzard colt, four cows and calves, one yoke of steers, and one bed and furniture, to him and his heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter Frances Ann Smith to be possessed of the same when she comes of age or marries, one negro girl named Izaball, one horse, four cows & calves, one yoke of steers, and one bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath to my son Hartwell Smith to be possessed of the same January one thousand eight hundred and twenty two, my land known and called the Tiney Woods, one negro boy named Hall, one hundred pounds current money of Virginia, one horse, four cows and calves, one yoke of steers, one bed and furniture, to him and his heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath to my son Littleton Smith to be possessed of the same January the first one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven, the land and plantation whereon I now live, one negro girl named Betty, one horse, four cows and calves, one yoke of steers and one bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever. Item, It is my will and desire that at the death or marriage of my said wife Nancy Smith that all the residue of my estate (not before disposed of) be equally divided between my five children, namely: David, John, Francis Ann, Hartwell and Littleton Smith, to them and their heirs forever. Lastly, It is my will and desire that my estate be not appraised. And I do hereby appoint my son David R. Smith Executor to this my Last Will and Testament making void all former Wills by me made.
