Clay, Matthew, born in Halifax county, Virginia, March 25, 1754; served in the
revolutionary war from 1776 to 1783 as a lieutenant and quartermaster; elected
as a Democratic Republican to the fifth, sixth, seventh, eight, ninth, tenth,
eleventh and twelfth congresses (March 4, 1795 - March 3, 1813); died in Halifax
county, Virginia, 1815.
