Guthrie Family Info, Primary Sources Listed - Halifax Co. VA Who was Nathaniel? This file will be an attempt to put down in one place first what I know about my ancestor, Nathaniel Guthrie, and second what I know about the Halifax Co., Virginia, Nathaniel Guthrie and his relatives in Halifax Co., VA and Person Co., NC. I believe at this time that the two are the same person. Although I have no direct proof of this, I do have plenty of circumstantial evidence. This may be all I ever have. Although circumstantial evidence may be less rewarding, in the face of evidence to the contrary, it may be just as conclusive. Known facts about my ancestor, Nathaniel Guthrie: 1. A Nathaniel Guthrie is my direct ancestor. Myra Borden found, in the Orphans Court Records of Lawrence Co., Alabama, proof of this. Orphan Court Minute Book C 1830-34, pages 352 and 368. Inventory and Will Book C 1829-1834, pages 299-300 Orphan Court Minute Book 1836-1838, pages 47, 203, 204, 441, and 442 2. A Nathaniel died ca. 1832 in Franklin Co. Alabama. (Franklin Co., newspaper in 1832 shows the death of a Nathaniel Guthrie whose estate was administered by David Gurley.) Borden's research shows that my ancestor Nathaniel died ca. 1832 and his estate was administered by David Gutley. 3. Nathaniel had children: John B. Guthrie (born 1801 in Virginia according to his 1850, 1860 census records.) Anne Marie Guthrie (born May 15, 1806 in Halifax Co., VA according to Gassier family records.) Anne Marie married Johannes David Gaisser May 18, 1825 in Lauderdale Co., Alabama. These dates and place of marriage and birth confirmed by Gaisser family data. Eliza Guthrie (born according to census data 1812 in Tennessee.) Lousetta (born according to census data 1817 in Virginia) William Carroll Guthrie (born 1818 in TN according to census data and headstone in Margarum Methodist Cemetery in Margarum Colbert Co., Alabama Ellen Guthrie. (NOTE: the long period of time between birth of John B. and Anne Marie. The descrepancy between birthplace of Eliza and Lousetta. Also the long period between Anne Marie and Eliza ) The children's name above are consistant with the information I have from Noble Ottis Guthrie my uncle. At the present time this is all that is proven about Nathaniel Guthrie. However from these facts we can show the following: 1. Nathaniel was present in Virginia in 1801 when son John was born. 2. Nathaniel was present in Halifax Co., Virginia when daughter Anne Marie was born. 3. Nathaniel had either moved to Tennessee by 1812 when Eliza was born, or this is in error and he was still in Virginia in 1817 when Lousetta was born. 4. Nathaniel had moved to Tennessee by October 12, 1818 when William Carroll was born. 5. By 1825 when Anne Marie married John David Gaisser the family must have been in Lauderdale Co., Alabama. 6. I have a copy of an indenture between John B. Guthrie, M. L. Black, and Benjamin Ellis dated 13 March 1833. 7. Nathaniel died in Franklin Co., Alabama in 1832. Known facts about a Nathaniel Guthrie of Halifax Co., Virginia. 1. From the Halifax Co., Virginia Pleas and Minites: p17:472 Nathaniel Guttery recognized as Ensign in Militia (1796) p18:29 Nathaniel Guttery recognized as Lt. in militia in lieu of Moses Turner (1796) p23:91 Nathaniel Guthrie recognized as Capt. in 1st Batt. of 69th. Nathaniel Guthrie is not on the 1820 Virginia census. In fact I can't find him on any 1820 census. 8. The 1820 Lauderdale Co., Alabama census has been lost. 9. I also can't find a Nathaniel on a 1830 census in Alabama, and since I know there was a Nathaniel Guthrie in Franklin Co., in 1832, somewhere in some household there has to be a Nathaniel Guthire present. Unless that record is also burned. Additionally in court records( pleas and quarter sessions 1820) of Williamson Co., Tennessee, a deposition is to be taken of Nathaniel Guthrie of Lauderdale Co., Alabama. In a continuation of the suit Nathaniel Guthrie is referred to as Capt. Guthrie. Some additional facts about a Nathaniel Guthrie, presumned to have been the Nathaniel of Halifax Co., Virginia. 1. They had a child Susannah Mann Guthrie (born 13 Jul 1795 Person, NC, died 30 Dec 1872, married 23 Dec 1809) This concludes what I know about Nathaniel. I am going to include some about a Charles. He appears to be a brother to Nathaniel. General Index to Deeds: Halifax Co. VA Charles Guthrie(grantee)--John Link(grantor). B & S Book 25 page 142. 29 Nov 1814. 103 Acre Dan River. (My note: It would appear this marriage took place in VA, and a thorough search of VA marriage records should be done.) >From the above it seems that Charles and Nathaniel were closely related, and closely allied with both the Link and the Warren families. >From the book, American Guthrie and Allied Families by Lawrence R. Guthrie: Garner Guthrie, according to tradition of descendants, was related to the Rev. James Guthrie, of Stirling, Scotland, who was put to death by order of the Crown June 1, 1661. He came, from Ireland to America and settled in Virginia, where his son Charles and his presumptive son Nathaniel Guthrie served in the Revolutionary War. >From the document submitted to me by the above Yvonne Cameron: Garner Guthrie was sometimes called Garrett. Charles Allen-said tract part of 250 A of Jerrat Guttrie 6 Nov 1798. Wit: Henry Cogburn, Elizabeth My note( Is the above Jerrat Guttrie actually the Garrett-Garner Guthrie I am looking for?) There was a Garritt Guthrie born in 1724 in Middlesex Co., Christ Church Parish, VA to John Guthrie and Mary Shay. He is supposed to have moved to NC. If Garritt is the father of Nathaniel then Garritt would have been 45 in 1769 when Nathaniel was born in Person Co., NC. North Carolina Guthrie information The first county formed in NC that included the persent day Person Co., was the Bertie Precinct of Albemarle County.
