HALIFAX COUNTY, VA - BIOGRAPHIES - Turner, Rogers & Black Families --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Turner, Rogers & Black Families 1707 - 1827 - A Timeline in Search of Ancestors Halifax County VA - Caswell County NC - Person County NC - Buncombe County NC - Haywood County NC © Marshall L. Styles September 2002 marshallstyles@yahoo.com In an attempt to discover the identity of the parents of Joseph Turner of Halifax County VA - then to Caswell County NC (later Person County NC) - then to Buncombe County NC (later Haywood County NC), I searched the records of all those counties for mention of the Turner name that might prove or give clue as to his parents identity. Since this Joseph had a wife whose name was Mary, my natural curiosity led me to look for her identity. Since Joseph and Mary had a son whose given name was a very Biblical Abraham, and whose middle name was Rogers, I searched those same records for the Rogers surname and found many such references, including an Abraham Rogers. And finally, since Abraham Rogers Turner named a lady appropriately named Sarah, whose family name was Black of Caswell County, I included that family surname in the search. Those records were placed chronologically up to the point where this Turner family moved from Central North Carolina into Western North Carolina. In addition to this chronology, I also assembled Family Group Sheets on those mentioned here to see if that would lend itself to drawing any conclusions as to identities of these two families (Joseph and Mary, Abraham and Sarah - and their daughter Ruth). While it is possible to establish and prove many relationships from this method, and to infer many relationships, there was no proving for those families in whom I was primarily concerned. I then continued in this same format for the Buncombe and Haywood County records of this same Joseph Turner, who died about January 1820 in the Richland Creek section of Haywood County, which is near Waynesville, in the Western North Carolina mountains. After this was completed, I put together the Buncombe County records of the son, Abraham Rogers Turner, most of which come from early Land Grants and Deeds. Abraham died in Buncombe County in 1800 from unknown causes, at the tender age of 36 years, more or less, leaving behind a young widow, Sarah Black Turner, and 8 orphan daughters, all of whom were minors. All records are chronological. It is my belief that no conclusions may they be drawn from these records as to the identity of the ancestors of Joseph Turner, nor the maiden name of his wife Mary, nor of the ancestors of Sarah Black who married Abraham Rogers Turner. I wish that I could report otherwise. I am a descendant of these persons. 1717 1 April 1717 - John Rogers and Peter Rogers granted land patent in Spotsylvania County, Virginia on middle fork of Mattapony River. Buncombe County Deed Book 15, page 179. Epilogue: One researcher by the name of Ruby Haley Moore of Georgia wrote a booklet "History of the Slate and Rabun Families" in 1979. This booklet is reported to be in the DAR Library in Washington DC. In that book Mrs. Moore reports that Annie Turner who married John Slate was a daughter of Joseph Turner and one Mary Hawkins, and that Joseph Turner was the son of Jack Turner of Maryland. That has not been independently verified by this researcher. Mrs. Moore also reported that John Slate was the son of Samuel Slate (died 1806) and Mary. It may be true that John Slate who married Annie Turner was a son of Samuel. It is highly unlikely that Joseph Turner and Mary Hawkins Turner are Annie's parents. Joseph Turner and Mary Hawkins Turner were married in Perquimans County, North Carolina in 1762. Joseph and Mary Turner who were the parents of Annie Turner (and of Abraham Rogers Turner, Robert Turner, Catherine Turner, Josiah Turner, Frances Turner, and Elizabeth Turner) were in Halifax County, Virginia by 1759 and remained there until at least 1779 before relocating to Caswell County. Two different Joseph's, two different Mary's. The Bryson descendants of Joseph and Mary Turner who settled in Haywood County claim that Mary was Joseph's second wife, and that her name was Mary Magdalene Whitmore or Whitmire, and married a man named Wikle, then married her husband's best friend Joseph Michael Turner in Rutherford County. Joseph Turner and Mary Magdalene Wikle were living in Rutherford County, NC, at the same time as another Joseph and Mary Turner were resident in Buncombe (later Haywood) County. Two different Joseph's, two different Mary's. Another dead end. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
