Ragland Cemetery Location: 10 miles southeast of South Boston, Virginia. Go 8.8 miles south of South Boston on Route #501, thence 1.2 miles east on Route #49. The graveyard is on the north side of the road. Halifax County DATE: 1798. OWNERS: Walter Bennett, 250 acres, 1798. (1) Richard E. Bennett, 250 acres for $1000.00, 1802 (2) Henry Easley, from Richard E. Bennett estate, 1835 (3) William W. Carrington, 521 ˝ acres for $803.75, 1838 (4) Robert E. Owen, 321 ˝ acres for $1,286.00, 1883 (5) Nannie E. Owen, gift, 1891 (6) John C. Harris, gift, 1900 (7) DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is in the corner of the garden at the home of John C. Harris. There are small marble markers at each grave. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The stones bear the following inscriptions: Thomas Carter Born Feby. 8, 1767 Died Feby. 14, 1830 Richard E. Bennett Born Feby. 26, 1779 Died Sept. 14, 1826 W. W. Bennett Born Feby. 19, 1812 Died Feby. 20, 1815 Mary Bennett Born Apr. 23, 1809 Died Apr. 27, 1810 Theoderick Carter’s will was recorded in 1805 in Will Book 7, page 152. His wife was Judith Carter and his children were Charles, Samuel, Elizabeth Richardson, William, Susanna Cabiness, Ann Bennett, Alexander, Nathaniel, Thomas and Jesse. Richard E. Bennett’s will was recorded in 1828 in Will Book 14, page 379. His wife was Ann Bennett and his children were John, Richard E., Theoderick A., William W., Mary W., Eliza Ann and Ann E.. Henry Easley married Eliza A. Bennett, September 10, 1827 and the marriage is recorded in Marriage Register Book 1, page 125. The Bennett home burned while Robert E. Owen was owner. He built a modern house on the site of the old home. The original office, kitchen and smoke house are still standing. John C. Harris, the present owner (1937), remodeled the Owen home a few years ago, and now it is a beautiful country home. The store in which the Bennetts and Owen merchandised, burned a few years ago.
