HALIFAX COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Irvin Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Irvin graveyard: 1937 Mar. 8 Research made by Mrs. Walter R. Ragland Cemetery Location: .4 mile south of South Boston, Virginia, on Route #501, thence 2 miles west on Route #58, thence 2 miles north on plantation road. Halifax County DATE: 1852. OWNERS: Mr. Obe Loftis, present owner of the land surrounding the graveyard. The graveyard itself was reserved by the Irvin family for their use and the use of their descendents. DESCRIPTION: The graveyard is enclosed with a stone wall about two and a half feet high. It is in an excellent state of preservation. There are several graves, but only these three are marked. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The stones bear the following inscriptions: John David Irvin Born September 17, 1828 Died September 29, 1858 Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. David L. Irvine Born April 20, 1794 Died Feb. 25, 1852 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear; It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds and drives away his fear.
