Ragland Cemetery Location: 15.4 miles southwest of South Boston, Virginia. Go 2.4 miles northwest from South Boston on Route #682, thence 13 miles southwest on Route #659, thence .4 mile northwest on Route #662. The graveyard is on the west side of the road. Halifax County DATE: 1859. OWNERS: John G. Mills, 1829 Fanny A. Marable, 1874 W. A. Osborne and R. H. Scales, 1909 to the present date (1937). These two are descendents of John Mills. DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is in a grove of oak and pine trees. There is no fence around it, no care is taken of it and bushes of all kinds and many wild plants are scattered throughout the lot. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The inscriptions copied from the stones are as follows: Elder John Garland Mills Born Mar. 12, 1804 Died Dec. 10, 1859 “I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation I have not concealed thy loving kindness and thy truth from the great congregation”. Erected as a token of love Kentucky, Laurel Grove and Arbor Baptist Churches. To the memory of their Deceased pastor Rev. William R. McDonald Born Nov. 7, 1829 Died July 27, 1869 “Servant of God well done Rest from thy loved employ the battle fought the victory won enter thy Master’s joy”. J. H. Mills, grandson of John Garland Mills, established the Masonic Orphanage at Oxford, North Carolina. Later he moved to Thomasville, North Carolina and established a Baptist Orphanage there. There are other graves in this lot which have oval shaped iron over them about two feet by three feet in size. On top of this iron is molded an open Bible about six by nine inches. This covering is on two graves. On another the form of a child is molded on the covering. At the head of each grave is an erect piece of iron that had a marble inset for the name and date, but the marble is gone now and no one knows whose graves these are.
