Grand Jury Proceedings, 5-19-1763

May 19, 1763 Grand Jury assembly, William IRBY, foreman, Nathaniel BARKSDALE,
James LEGRANDE, Wm. McDANIEL, Daniel EASLEY, Rob. HUTCHINSON, Patrick SHIELDS,
John SMITH, Wm. CHANDLER, John LEGRANDE, Thos. SPRAGGINS, Benja. DICKSON, John
ADAMS, Abraham LEGRANDE, Wm. LEWIS and Stephen FARIS were sworn for a Grand Jury
of Halifax.
   Their presentments were:
Surveyor of the new road from Difficult [creek] to Russells for not keeping
the road in repair.  Ditto; Surveyor of the road from James McKENDREES to Hunts
ferry. Ditto; Surveyor of the road from Samuel HARRIS' to the Chappel. Ditto;
the surveyor of the road from Cherrystone to Stinking River.
Ditto; Surveyor of the road from the Courthouse to William LAWS ford. Wealthy
PREWITT for having a bastard child, Mary Ann CROSBY for the same. John COBBS for
profane swearing and Sarah SMITH for the same. The Grand Jury also found a Bill
of Indictment aganist John COBBS for an assault and battery committed on the
body of Mary SMITH. Ordered that a process issue aganist the persons this day
presented by the Grand Jury, to cause them to come here to the next Court.

John HODGES having behaved in an insolent & contentious manner to this Court
while the same was sitting, it is ordered said John be committed to the Halifax
prison untill he enters into recognizance with two securities, that is to say,
himself in the sum of 20 pounds and each security in the sum of 10 pounds, with
condition that said HODGES shall be of good behavior for a year and a day.
