Halifax County, VA Will Book 10, p. 584 Inventory and assessment of the estate of Thomas A. Oliver decd. taken November 6th, 1816. Follows a long list including: 1 pine chest 1 pine table 2 pewter tumblers ½ dozen earthen plates ½ dozen silver tea spoons etc. p. 585 Agreeable to an order of the ………. Court of Halifax we the undersigned have this day appraised the estate of Thos A Oliver nine hundred and seventy three dollars & seventy nine & half cents. Agreeable to the foregoing Nathaniel Barksdale & William Oliver, Administrators (note 3 other men made their mark by their names but I can’t read those names well) At a court held for Halifax Conty the 2nd day of December 1816 the within written inventory and appraisement of the estate of Thomas A Oliver received and returned to court ordered to be truly recorded. (Administrators) 1816 Dec. 13 Long list of items and amounts that are difficult to read. Will Book 16, p. 238 (bottom) Elijah A. Newbill Dr. to the orphans of Thomas A Oliver (dates in margin begin with 1822 June 21) This section mentions the hire of Silvy or Buck several times. These were likely slaves that were owned by the Oliver family and other paid for their use for a period. Total was $859.36 - 59.96 the commission paid to Newbill = $799.40 We the undersigned to certify that agreeable to an order from the Court of Sept. last that we the commissioners have examined and settled the afs between the wards of Elijah A. Newbill as guardian of Thomas A. Oliver decd. and we find said wards indebted to said Newbill in the sum of two hundred and eighteen dollars and 39 cents. Given under our hand this 30 day of October 1832. Joseph Crews Richard Abbott John T Palmer Harrison Oliver to E A Newbill as guardian Dr. (dates in margin begin 1822 Aug 5) follows a list of various items with small monetary amounts, such as….. cash paid for 1 pair shews 1.50 1 wool hat & 1 quire? paper 1.50 cash paid for tuition and board of teacher 10.00 etc. Mary Oliver to E A Newbill as guardian Dr. (dates in margin begin 1829 Nov) spring bonnet 3.00 1 pair leather shoes 1.50 1 year board 40.00 etc. Nancy Oliver to E A Newbill as guardian Dr. (dates in margin begin 1830 April) cash paid James C Cole for tuition 24.00 casmere shall 2.25 etc. Thomas A. Oliver to E A Newbill as guardian Dr. (dates in margin begin 1821 February) to cash for making shews .25 2 ½ yds cloth 1.25 cash paid Matthews for tuition 7.50 etc. Rubin Oliver to E A Newbill as guardian Dr. To board clothing and tuition so long as I have had him which has been 15 years 525.00 At a Court held for Halifax County the 22nd day of Oct 1832 The within written account current of the orphans of Thomas A Oliver decd with Elijah A Newbill their guardian was returned to court by commissioners appointed to settle the same and it was ordered that the same be one term?
