November 1853 

I, William J. Powell Junior of the County of Caswell, North Carolina, heir 
at law of Mastin Powell, deceased, for and in consideration of the sum of 
twenty dollars to him in hand paid by William J. Powell Senior of the 
County of Halifax, Virginia, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged 
hath bargained, sold and by these presents doth bargain, sell and deliver 
to the said William J. Powell, his heirs all of my interest in the dower of 
Mary Powell left her by her husband Mastin Powell. … I William J. Powell, 
for myself, my heirs I do warrant forever defend the right, title & 
claim...of said dower in the possession of Mary Powell of Halifax, Virginia 
... I have set my hand a seal this 28th day of November 1853
