Mrs. Crawley was born in Halifax County on January 22, 1904 the daughter of Robert and Dora Whitlock Brandon and was married to Walter W. Crawley Sr. Survivors include four daughters, Anna and George Wilkins of the home, Dora and Roger Mason of Turbeville, Ida and William Robertson of Washington, DC and Willie M. Crawley of Ft. Washington, MD; seven sons, Charlie and Malinda Crawley, Joseph and Mary Crawley, all of Turbeville, Rev. Allen Crawley of Waynesboro, Walter Crawley Jr. of Lanham, MD, John and Gladys Crawley, Kelso and Sarah Crawley and George Crawley, all of Washington, DC; 26 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Estell Watkins of Semora, NC. Funeral services will be held today, August 3 at 1 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church, South Boston with Rev. James L. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. EDWARD B. OWEN Edward B. Owen of StoneyBrook, NY and formerly of Halifax County, died July 30, 1998 at the Long Island State Veterans Home at the age of 101. Mr. Owen was born in Halifax County on November 18, 1896, the son of Millard Filmore Owen and Betty Page Stephens Owen. He was married to Carolyn Eggart Owen and was the oldest member of the Winns Creek Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War I. His survivors include his daughter: Virginia Owen Lea of Ronkonkoma, NY; son: Ralph Owen of Turnersville, NJ, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, August 3 at the F. Daniel Maloney Funeral Home in Ronkonkoma at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. ROBERT HENRY OAKES Robert Henry Oakes of 1726 Norwood Ave., South Boston died July 31, 1998 at The Woodview at the age of 91. Mr. Oakes was born in Clover on November 23, 1906 to Ormand Winfield Oakes and Anna Snead Oakes. He was married to Anna Marie Leach Oakes and was a member of the Centerville Baptist Church. He as a retired Lt. Commander with the U.S. Navy where he trained Navy Cadet Pilots. His survivors include his wife; daughter: Carol Ann Fisher of Phoenix, AZ; sisters: Gertrude Foreman and Kathryn Warner of Sykesville, MD, and Irene Bell of Phoenix; step-daughters: Susan W. Kelley of Gaithersburg, MD, Jeannene W. Mitchell of Winchester, Velma Whitefield of West Palm Beach, FL; step-son: William Whitefield of Mt. ERNA DELORES JONES MITCHELL Erva Delores "Dee" Jones Michelli of 652 Montrose Ave., Roanoke died July 31, 1998 at Manor Care Health Services, Bethlehem, PA at the age of 58. Mrs. Michelli was born March 5, 1940 in Person Co., NC to Espey R. Jones Sr. and Erva Brooks Jones. Her survivors include her daughters: Celeste W. SALLIE CROWDER CHANDLER Sallie Crowder Chandler of 621 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was 94 years of age. Mrs. Chandler was born February 15, 1904 in Halifax County the daughter of Willie Crowder and Signor Moorefield Crowder and was married to Walter Miller 'Pete' Chandler. She was a member of First Baptist Church, and the oldest member of American Legion Post 8 Ladies Auxiliary. Graveside services will be held Sunday, August 2 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Louise Chandler Walker and L. Mr. Pugh was born in Pittsylvania County on April 23, 1917 the son of James Edward Pugh and Rosa Gibson Pugh and was married to Lutie Burgess Pugh. He was a member of The Church of Christ in Altavista. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Nancy Childress and husband John of Gretna, Marie Tucker and husband Malcolm of Altavista and Susan Clay and husband Glenn of Ormond Beach, FL; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gertrude Allen of Altavista. BARBARA ELLA EDMONDSON Barbara Ella Edmondson of 1911 North Main Street, South Boston died Saturday, August 1, 1998 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC at the age of 44. Mrs. Edmondson was born in Halifax County on November 13, 1953 the daughter of Charlie Sam Hamlette and Ella Jones Hamlette and was married to Clarence Edmondson. She was a member of McLaughlin Memorial Holiness Church. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Jennifer Lipscomb of Danville; one son, Clarence Edmondson of South Boston; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Chandler of Halifax and Florence Paul of Keeling; and one brother, Roger Hamlette of South Boston. Burial will follow in Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery. NORMAN M. COLEMAN Norman M. Coleman passed away recently. He was born in Halifax on November 7, 1932 the son of Clarence S. and Mabel R. Coleman. Mr. Coleman received his education in Halifax County public schools. After which he was drafted into the U.S. Army. During his 20 years in service, he graduated from the N.C.O. Academy in Fort Meade, MD. His overseas assignments included Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, France and Germany. His stateside service, in addition to Fort Meade, included three separate tours at the Pentagon. After a distinguished career in the Army having received numerous medals, awards and commendations, he retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant on August 1, 1973. On April 15, 1974 he joined the U.S. Capitol Police Force where he spent 20 years. He retired from this job on April 15, 1994. Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Coleman; seven sisters, Manie Coles of Brooklyn, NY, Lovenia Brown and Evelyn Nash, both of Philadelphia, PA, Elaine Coleman of Richmond, Margaret Obie of Greensboro, NC, Vearlie Coleman of Harlem, NY and Myrtle Bates of Crystal Hill; one brother, William Coleman of South Boston; three brothers-in-law, Marvis Bates of Crystal Hill, Arthur Obie of Greensboro and Arthur Brooks of Queens, NY; one sister-in-law, Nancy Coleman of South Boston; two god-daughters, Diane Kemp of Washington, DC and Nicole Clark of Pittsburgh, PA. CLYDE EDWARD NICHOLS Clyde Edward Nichols of 1212 Peach Avenue, South Boston died Monday, August 3, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 84 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Nichols was born in Halifax County on September 28, 1913 the son of Avner Nichols and Maude Chandler Nichols and was married to Johnnie M. Nichols. He was a member of McCanless United Methodist Church and was a member of the American Legion for 55 years. He was a Marine veteran of World War II. Mrs. Barbour was born in Halifax County on April 28, 1917 the daughter of Patrick Henry Dixon and Cornelia Tucker Dixon and was married to Bayton Alexander Barbour. Mr. Coleman was born in Halifax County on December 24, 1910 the son of Algie Coleman Sr. and Charity Fleming Coleman and was married to Louise Allen Coleman. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church. Miss Waller was born in Halifax County on June 9, 1938 the daughter of Gus Lewis Waller and Ollie Lee Thompson Waller. Marvin Caldwell Hillsman, US Army Retired, 91, of Farmville and formerly of Falls Church, died Sunday, August 9, 1998 at Southside Community Hospital. Col. Hillsman was born May 15, 1907 in Bedford County the son of Harry Pollard and Betty Palmer Hillsman and was married to Rebecca Jennings Hillsman. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Marvin C. Hillsman Jr. and Grace O'Neil Hillsman of Harrisonburg; two granddaughters, Susan H. Hurley of VA Beach and Amy H. Blackwell of Harrisonburg; two great-grandsons, John and Mark Hurley of VA Beach; three sisters, Frances H. Thomas of Lynchburg, Angie H. Graves of Bedford and Ruth H. McVeigh of Lynchburg; one brother, John D. Hillsman of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his wife, one sister, Fern H. Deaner, and one brother, O. Duvall Hillsman. Col. Hillsman was graduated from New London Academy in 1926 and from VA Tech in 1930. He served with the 29th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II and with the 5th Infantry Division and the Far East Central Command during the Korean War. After retirement, he served with the Department of Defense. Prior to World War II he was a high school teacher and coach in Halifax County, and he also was employed by Southern States between World War II and Korean War. Col. Hillsman was an active Mason as a member of Mentow Lodge #180 in Bedford, and the National Sojourners, the Heroes of '76, and the Royal Arch Masons in Arlington. He was also a member of the Kena Temple of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Alexandria. A memorial service will be held at Shorter Funeral Home in Farmville at 3 p.m. Thursday, August 13. A funeral and burial service with full military honors will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 20. Samuel Mason Torian Jr. of Florence Avenue, Virgilina died Monday, August 10, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 85 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Torian was born in Halifax County on July 15, 1913 the son of Samuel Mason Torian Sr. and Frances Dickinson Torian and was married to Annie Baker Young Torian. He was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church. He was the grandson of the late Alfred Elijah Dickinson who was a Baptist minister and editor of The Religious Herald for a number of years. Mr. Torian attended Augusta Military Academy and Smithdeal-Massey Business School. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Hallie Torian Owen of Alton; one son, Samuel Mason Torian III of Collinsville; five grandchildren, Rufus Owen IV of Dallas, TX, Dan Owen of Eugene, OR, Jackson Taylor Owen of Falls Church, Samuel Mason Torian IV of Sterling and Sarah Ellen Torian of Atlanta, GA. Following two Associate Pastorates in the Southern Baptist Convention, Powell became pastor of Colonial Presbyterian Church in Roanoke in 1964, where he served for 27 years. He was born in South Boston, August 31, 1956, son of Beatrice Tuck Guthrie of Nathalie and the late Robert James Guthrie. He was a mechanic and body technician. Glidewell of 1164 Lenning Road, Nathalie died Thursday, August 27, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 81. Mr. Glidewell was born in Halifax County on March 14, 1917, the son of John Alexander Glidewell and Louetta Midkiff Glidewell. He was married to Nancy Thompson Glidewell. Mr. Glidewell was a member of the Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church, 32nd degree Mason Lodge 143, all the lodges in the 37th District-past district deputy, the Scottish Rite in Danville, the American Legion 0008 and the W.O.W. of South Boston. His survivors include his wife; son: James H. and Bobbie Glidewell Jr. of Lynch Station; grandson: Charles (Chuck) and Michelle Glidewell of Rustburg: granddaughter: Andrea and Trey Chapman of Altavista and two great-granddaughters: Meagan and Lindsey. ANTHONY LEE IRBY Mr. Anthony Lee Irby of South Boston died August 27 at his home. He was born in Halifax County to Miriam Hall Irby Carrington and Willie Carroll White on November 14, 1971. Anthony was educated in the Halifax County public school system and he also attended Job Corp in West Virginia. He married Zerlene Hall in 1991. Mr. Irby became a member of Deliverance Tabernacle in 1989, and his ministry began in 1990. He was licensed by the Churches of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. and was ordained as an Elder in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Zerlene Hall Irby; two children, Allicia Lenee Irby and Anthony Lee Irby II; his parents; step-father, Philip Carrington; two grandmothers, Edna Hall and Mary J. White, all of South Boston; his grandfather, Joseph White of Newport News; five brothers, Orlando (Brenda) Irby and family of Richmond, Michael (Kim) Irby of Bremerton, Wa., Jamie (Myrah) Irby Lykes and family, Philip Carrington, Jr. and Jerey Hutcherson, all of South Boston; and five sisters, Katrina Irby and family, June Irby and family of Pompano Beach, Fl., Edwina Irbyand family, Connie Irby and family and Monique Carrington, all of South Boston.
