He was 43 years of age. Mr. Butler was born in Halifax County in January 9, 1955, the son of Ned Anderson Butler and Hazel Elder Butler. Survivors include one sister, Alice Mae B. Atkins of Java and one half-sister, Dale Moorefield of Scottsburg. He was preceded in death by a brother, John E. Moorefield. JOHN ARTHUR THOMAS MORGAN John Arthur Thomas Morgan of South Boston died at Halifax Regional Hospital on Saturday, November 28, 1998. He was 66 years of age. Mr. Morgan was born on December 28, 1932 the son of Pearl Long Morgan and John Hamett Morgan. He was married to Zada Richardson. ROYALL BECKHAM KEITH Royall Beckham Keith of 1725 Haskins Street, South Boston died Monday, November 30, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. he was 89 years of age. Mr. Keith was born in Lynchburg on July 29, 1909 the son of James Wesley Keith and Helen Gray Becham Keith and was married to Mae Angell Keith. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and a member of Halifax Sportsman Club, Dun Roaming and retired from Universal Leaf Tobacco Company. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Burks Keith Scarborough of Overland Park, KS; one step-daughter, Teela A. Tschirn of Fort Pierce, FL; three grandchildren, Becham S. Linton, James Royal Scarborough and Matthew Peel Scarborough; and three great-grandchildren. Lipscomb of Voorhees, NJ and William M. Lipscomb III of Norwalk, CT; one daughter, Sandra L. MARGIE MALLOY Margie Malloy of Pittsburg, PA died Saturday, November 28, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 45. Ms. Malloy was born in New York on June 4, 1953. PEARL MAE FUQUAY Pearl Mae Fuquay of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston died Tuesday, December 1, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 88 years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Fuquay was born March 28, 1910 in Halifax County the daughter of Captain W. Fuquay and Elizabeth Edwards Fuquay. She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church. CATHERINE WILSON GRADY Catherine Wilson Grady of Statesville, NC, formerly of Virgilina, died Saturday, November 28, 1998 at her home. Mrs. Grady was born February 17, 1926 in Halifax County the daughter of James Robert Wilson and Dora Tuck Wilson and was married to Carl Dewey Grady. She was a charter member of Forest Park Presbyterian Church, and was a graduate of Virgilina High School and Blackstone College. Survivors include two sons, William 'Bill' Wilson Grady and Samuel Edward Grady, both of the home; three sisters, Virginia W. Hudson of Virgilina, Marie W. Timmerman of Rockville, MD and Hilda W. Mrs. Tribble was born July 12, 1924 in Halifax to Thomas Melvin and Adie Belle (Long) Hudson. She was married to the late William Thornton Tribble and was a member of the Fishersville United Methodist Church and the Nellie Myers Circle. She was retired from the Augusta Co. Public School System. She was preceded in death by her brother: Thomas M. Hudson, Jr. Her survivors include her son: Bill Tribble of Fishersville; daughter: Nancy T. Mrs. Jones was born in Halifax County on March 4, 1938 the daughter of William Howard Wilborn and Mary Ida Coleman Wilborn and was married to James M. Jones. She was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church. She was the Director of the Warren County, NC Board of Elections in Warrenton and was actively involved in numerous organizations including the Warren County Board of Health, the Warren County NAACP, the Triangle Garden Club, the Extension Homemakers Association and a founding member of the H.L. Brooks Scholarship Fund. Mr. Pannell was born July 10, 1913 in Halifax County the son of Dave Pannell and Betty Word Pannell and was married to Jennie Pannell. He was a retired farmer and school bus driver. He was a member of First Buffalo Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons and was a Sunday School teacher, trustee and member of the senior choir. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. DOROTHY GAY MCCRAW ANDERSON Dorothy Gay McCraw Anderson of 1055 Crystal Hill Road died Wednesday, December 9, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 77 years of age. Mrs. Anderson was born in Halifax County on July 18, 1921 the daughter of Samuel Mansfield McCraw and Annie Gladys Woody McCraw and was married to J. Harold Anderson. She was a member of Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Livian Faye A. Thomas Tinsley Traynham Jr. of Crewe, a Presbyterian minister for more than 30 years and a native of Halifax County, has died at the age of 79. A graduate of Union Theological Seminary, Mr. Traynham "lived his ministry," said his wife, Lucy. He was a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and was an air traffic control officer in the Army Air Forces during World War II, rising to the rank of Major, before attending seminary. Ordained in 1051, Mr. Traynham served as pastor of Bethany, Boaz and Franklin Presbyterian churches, concurrently, in the Franklin and Isle of Wight areas. Mr. Traynham relocated to Oxford, N. C., where he was pastor of Oxford Presbyterian Church for 16 years. He then accepted a call to Pryor Memorial Church in Crewe and remained there for nearly 15 years. He also was pastor of Burkeville Presbyterian Church for several years during that time. After his retirement in 1984, he served as pastor for several small churches on a week-by-week basis and served as the moderator for some of those churches' governing bodies. He also sometimes held services in area nursing homes and often provided transportation for the elderly and ill. He was a former president of the Kiwanis Club of Crewe and was an avid outdoorsman. In addition to his wife, Lucy Ann Edmunds Traynham, he is survived by two sons, Thomas M. Traynham and wife Jenny of Willis and Randolph E. Traynham and wife Debbie of Mechanicsville; one daughter, Lucy S. Moore and husband Peyton of Martinsville, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Pryor Memorial Presbyterian Church in Crewe, with burial in Concord Presbyterian Church in Rawlings, Va. EVELYN HODNETT WORSHAM Evelyn Hodnett Worsham of 2011 Alex Lane, Nathalie died Friday, December 11, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on December 228, 1908 and was 89 ears old. She was the daughter of Major Hodnett and Sallie Ann Hodnett and was married to Alex T. Worsham. She was a member of the Clover Bottom Baptist Church and was a member of the Rebekah Organization. William Durelle Crews, Sr., of 3160 Old Cluster Springs Road, South Boston, died Saturday, December 12, 1998 at the VA Hospital in Durham, N. C. He was born n Saxe, on May 21, 1929 and was 69 years old. He was the son of Garland Everett Crews and Irene King Crews and was married to Bette Collins-Crews. He was a member of the South Boston Church of God and a former Boy Scout Troop Leader of Troop 67 of Collinsville. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was in the U. S. Air Force from 1948-52 as a Sgt. in Strategic Air Command. He was a former Virginia State Trooper and also served as personnel Safety Director for the Virginia Carolina Freight Lines and was a general contractor in Halifax and South Boston. December 16, 1998 KERMIT LEVI THOMPSON Kermit Levi Thompson, 88, of Lynchburg died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Camelot Hall Nursing Home. He was the husband of Bessie Puckette Thompson for 65 years. Born August 10, 1910 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Fred Harmon and Mary Moore Thompson. He was a retired fireman for the city of Lynchburg. Mr. Thompson was formerly a member of First United Methodist Church and currently a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church. He was a Sunday School teacher for 21 years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Thompson is survived by one son, Donald P. Thompson and his wife Sandra of South Boston; one daughter, Brenda T. Parker, former Halifax County educator and civic leader, died December 16, 1998, at Sunnybrook Nursing Home in Raleigh, NC. Mr. Parker was born in Halifax County on November 8, 1910, and was 88 years old. He was the son of the late Mr. W. Benjamin Parker and Mrs. Bettie Baker Cole Parker, and was married to the late Mrs. Nellie Mae (Bee) Parker. He was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church, a former minister and a retired school principal. He was active in the Halifax Masonic Lodge. He initiated the Jail Ministry at the Halifax Jail and was active in this. He was a tutor for those taking the GED tests. The Southfax Sertoma Club recognized his efforts and awarded him its Service to Mankind Award in 1982. In addition, he supported his wife with her deaf ministry in Halifax County. He was a recipient of the Governor's Silver Volunteer Award. Mr. Parker attended Bluefield College, University of Richmond and Croza Seminary, and received a Master's of Education from Longwood College. He is survived by one daughter, Bettie P. Ittenbach of Cary, NC; two sons, William Gary Parker of Boulder, Col., and Walter B. Parker of Halifax; one brother, Henry Parker of South Boston, and six grandchildren, Lori Parker, Ben Parker, Brian Parker, Julie Parker, John Kennerly and David Kennerly. LEWIS HARPER LAWSON Rev. Dr. Lewis Harper Dawson of 1105 Cluster Springs Road, South Boston died Monday, December 21, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 93 years of age. Rev. Dawson was born November 30, 1905 in Pittsylvania County the son of Edward Johnson Dawson and Eliza Catherine Binford Dawson and was first married to Zelma Ruth Hocutt Dawson and later to Margaret Hudson Puryear Dawson, who survives him. He was a retired Baptist minister, a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and the Halifax Masonic Lodge for 50 years, serving as Master of the Lodge and as District Deputy Grand Master as recently as 1975. He graduated from Georgetown College in KY with an A.B. degree, and from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY with the Master of Theology and Doctor of Philosophy. Rev. Dawson served as pastor of Baptist churches for over 50 years in KY, VA, and NC, and for three years was an Associational Missionary in NC. He was an active duty Chaplain with the Navy for three years during WWII. He filled various denominational positions including a trustee of Oak Hill Baptist Academy, and was pastor of Black Walnut Baptist for 10 years. Rev. Dawson's work has been recognized widely as indicated by being selected for inclusion in such publications as Marquis "Who's Who in the South and Southwest;" Marquis "Who's Who in Religion;" Nygaard "Who's Who in the Protestant Clergy;" "Virginia Lives," published by the Historical Record Association; "Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans," and "Personalities of the South," both published by the American Biographical Institute; "Dictionary of International Biography," London, England; and "Men of Achievement," Cambridge, England. INEZ DRUMWRIGHT CRAWLEY Inez Drumwright Crawley of Reserve, LA died Tuesday, December 22, 1998. Mrs. Crawley was born July 29, 1912 the daughter of Charles and Luna Drumwright in Woodsdale, NC, and was married to Henry Dekota Crawley. She was first a member of Allen Chapel Baptist Church and later moved her membership to Ebenezer CME Church in South Boston. Survivors include one daughter, Melba Crawley Wolfe and son-in-law, Richard Wolfe Sr.; three grandchildren, Terrance, Darren and Endya; two great-grandchildren, DeMario and Joy; two sisters, Ocie Drumwright of Roxboro, NC and Iva Drumwright McCrae of Durham, NC; and two sisters-in-law, Edna Drumwright of South Boston and Odessa Drumwright of Virgilina. GILBERT THOMAS CARTER Gilbert Thomas Carter of Winns Creek Community, Halifax died Friday, December 25, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 93 years of age. Mr. Carter was born in Halifax County on June 4, 1905 the son of Willie Green Carter and Mary Elizabeth Powell Carter and was married to Edna Booker Carter. He was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jerry Thomas and Gail Carter and Leo Booker and Margie Carter, all of Church Road, and Willie Lee Carter of Halifax; two daughters, Barbara Jean and John Helms of Billa Rica, GA and Cindy Carter Johnson of Chase City; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Raymond Langford. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Russell was born in Halifax County on September 19, 1927 the son of Willie Eugene Russell and Mattie Conner Russell and was married to Gloria Culley Russell. He was a member of Bible Believers Baptist Church and was a retired barber, and an Air Force Veteran. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Samuel W. Russell and Steven E. CLARENCE ALBERT REDD Clarence Albert Redd of 806 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died Thursday, December 24, 1998 at his home. He was 70 years of age. Mr. Redd was born in Halifax County on April 23, 1928 the son of Curtis Redd and Rebecca Kates Redd and was married to Melissa Ingram Redd. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and a lifetime member of South Boston Volunteer Fire Department. MARJORIE DENNIS COOPER Marjorie Dennis Cooper of 1060 Golf Course Road, Halifax died Monday, December 28, 1998 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was 81 years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Cooper was born in Bradford, PA on June 30, 1917 the daughter of Vird L. Dennis and Edith Agnes Fehan Dennis and was married to Leonard Cooper. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Lewis of Halifax; one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Charlie Marino of Largo, FL; one step-brother and step sister-in-law, Robert 'Bob' and Dorothy Frison of Port Allegheny, PA; one step-sister, Mary Irwin of Largo; three grandsons, Thomas J. Trask and wife, Karin of Mary Esther, FL, Robert G. Trask and wife, Carolyn of Phoenix, AZ, and Daniel K. JAMES WAVELY POINTER James Wavely Pointer of 2078 Traynham Grove Road, Alton died Thursday, December 24, 1998 at Libby Convalescent Home in Richmond at the age of 74. Mr. Pointer was born in Halifax County on January 12, 1924 the son of Ned Pointer and Hallie Wade Pointer and was married to Mary Louise Perkins Pointer. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church and was also a World War II Army Veteran. HELEN FLOURNOY HARDING Helen Flournoy Harding of 1100 Mountain Road, Halifax died Monday, December 28, 1998 at her home. She was 89 years of age. Mrs. Harding was born in Halifax County on December 17, 1909 the daughter of Basil D. Flournoy and Nancy Wilson Flournoy and was married to Herman Merritt Harding. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Survivors include one son, Herman M. Harding Jr. of Halifax; one daughter, Barbara H. Hager of Williamsburg; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary F. Harding of Mechanicsville; and one brother, William G. Flournoy of Richmond. Mr. Taylor was born in Halifax County on October 8, 1914 the son of Albert Taylor and Josephine Miller Taylor and was married to Ann Tisdale Taylor. He was a member of Five Forks Baptist Church, was a World War II Army Veteran and was a retired employee of Bell Atlantic. Burial will follow in Five Forks Baptist Church Cemetery. THOMAS EDWIN GRAVITT Thomas Edwin Gravitt, 74, of Roxboro, NC died Monday, December 28, 1998 at Person County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gravitt was born in Halifax County the son of Ira Addison and Mary Averett Gravitt and was first married to the late Audrey Faye Jones Gravitt and later to Bettie Tate Gravitt, who survives. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church, a WWII Army Veteran, retired employee of Burlington Industries, a member of VFW, and a volunteer at the Senior Center in Person County. Survivors other than his wife include, four sons; Allen V. Gravitt, Henry Wayne Gravitt and Donnie Ray Gravitt, all of Virgilina and Ira Thomas Gravitt of Alton; one daughter, Sandra Jean G. Mikkelsen of South Boston; one step-daughter, Shirley B. Smoot of Lynchburg; three sisters, Margaret G. Harris of Roxboro, Nora Ellen G. Wilson of South Boston and Lorene G.
