GEORGE S. LOWERY Dr. George S. Lowery died Thursday, January 29, 1998 at the age of 82 in Austin, TX after a lengthy illness. Dr. Lowery was born on April 20, 1915 to George and Rena Lowery in South Boston. He graduated from Columbia Union College in Tacoma Park, MD and received his M.D. from Tecnologico de Monterrey, NL, Mexico. He retired after 18 years from Austin State Hospital. Dr. Lowery was a member of the Austin First SDA Church where he was an elder. He was married to Una Elizabeth White. His survivors include his daughter: Emma L. King and husband Marshal; sons: George Jr. and wife Sondara, and William Lowery; grandchildren: Michael and Mark Vargas, Brittany and Shalo Mae Lowery; and brother: Thomas Lowery and wife Faith Marie. Funeral services will be held today, February 2 at 10 a.m. at the Austin First Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Steve Snow officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Hill Park. JOSEPHINE WOODING LANTZ Josephine Wooding Lantz, 86, off Route 1, Timberville, died January 31, 1998 at the Life Care Center in New Market. Mrs. Lantz was born May 16, 1911 in Halifax, the daughter of Robert H. and Elizabeth Carter Wooding. She attended State Teachers College, James Madison University and graduated from Longwood College. Mrs. Lantz was a member of the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren where she taught the kindergarten class. She was a member of the Rockingham Retired Teachers Association, the Harrisonburg Association for Retarded Citizens and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was married to Ivan Charles Lantz. Her survivors include a daughter: Mary Maiden of Richmond; sons: Thomas and Robert Lantz of Timberville; four grandchildren: Kathleen, Anne and Margaret Lantz of Timberville and Erich Lantz of Broadway; and a brother: Robert Wooding of Halifax. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 3 at 1 p.m. at the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren in Broadway by the Rev. Paul Roth. Interment will be private. Springbrook Road, Broadway, VA 22815. ELNORA TALLEY ROWLAND Elnora Talley Rowland of Upper Marlboro, MD died Thursday, January 29, 1998 in Prince George County, MD. Mrs. Rowland was born in Halifax County, the daughter of John and Atha Tuck Talley. She was married to Nathaniel Rowland. Her survivors include her husband; brother: Elder Zebedee Talley Sr. of Danville; sisters: Katie Williams and Gracie Standfield of South Boston and Cecila Crutchfield or Roxboro, MD. GEORGE EDWARD PALMER George Edward Palmer of Nathalie died Friday, January 30, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 53. He was born in Halifax County on March 4, 1944. His survivors include his daughters: Angie Palmer of Brookneal, Monyca Palmer of Long Island, Barbara Palmer of Laura, MD and Vanessa Palmer of Washington, DC; sons: Eric Palmer of Hurt, Ruby Palmer of Wilmington, DE, Quinton Palmer of Yellow Branch and Stephon Palmer of Altavista; sisters: Alease Armsted and Dorothy Boyd of Crystal Hill; and brothers: Bradshaw Palmer and Thomas Boyd of Nathalie. NORMA CLIFFORD BROWN Norman Clifford Brown, 77, died Friday, January 30, 1998 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Brown grew up in Lynchburg and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 13th Army Division in the European Theatre. He was plant manager at Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation in Halifax and Melville Shoe Corporation and then regional manager for Blue Ridge Shoe Division. A 32 degree Mason, he was a member of the Mountain City, TN Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite Bodies. His survivors include his wife: Helen Kenley Brown of Greenville, NC; son: Michael Page Brown of Greenville; daughters: Patricia Harris of Fayetteville, GA, Sharon Bray of Danville, Joanne B. Roiter of Hubert, NC; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a sister: Evelyn Fariss of Gladys. A graveside service was conducted Sunday, February 1 at Pinewood Memorial Park. RAY JUNIOR WIMBUSH Ray Junior Wimbush of Crystal Hill passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 1998 at the Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 62. He was born in Halifax County on April 27, 1935. His survivors include his sisters: Dorothy Gilmore and Alice Carr of Crystal Hill; nieces: Barbara Chappell, Alma Chappell and Darlene Carr-Greene and nephews: Larry Gilmore and Jimmy Carr. THELSIE RICE JACKSON Thelsie Rice Jackson, 89, of Gladys died Friday, January 30, 1998 at the Lynchburg General Hospital. Mrs. Jackson was born in Halifax County February 23, 1908, the daughter of Joel Thomas Rice and Lelia Doss Rice. She was married to Charlie Ray Jackson and was a member of Edge Baptist Church. Her survivors include her son: Charlie Lewis Jackson of South Boston; daughters: Jennie Waller of Rustburg, Sterling Jackson of Gladys, Laura Phelps of Bedford, Sandra Fay of Midlothian; brother: Clarence Rice of Brookneal; sister, Pauline Glass of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. DOROTHY INGRAM FISHER Dorothy Ingram Fisher, 81, of Nathalie died Saturday, January 31, 1998 at the Woodview Nursing Home. Mrs. Fisher was born in Halifax County on September 10, 1916, the daughter of Charlie Hudson Ingram and Fannie Spencer Ingram. She was married to Reginald Vernon Fisher and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. Her survivors include two sons and three daughters-in-law: Douglas and Barbara Fisher, Vernon (Buddy) and Evelyn Fisher, and Helen Fisher of Nathalie; son-in-law: Larry (Joe) Angel of Nathalie; grandchildren: Steven Fisher, Vicki Overby, Tony Angel, Connie Blanks, Bobby Fisher, Debra Dalton; great-grandchildren: Carissa Overby, Tommy Blanks, Heida and Holly Dalton, Priscilla and Marilyn Fisher; brothers: Arthur Ingram of Nathalie, Luther Ingram of South Boston, Garland Ingram of Los Angeles, CA; and sisters: Elizabeth Martin of Nathalie and Edith Powell of South Boston. February 4, 1998 ANNIE ELIZABETH SPENCE Annie Elizabeth Spence, 97, of Tangier, died Saturday, January 31, 1998 at McCready Hospital in Crisfield, MD. Mrs. Spence was born in Halifax and was married to Sidney R. Spence. She was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Winns Creek Baptist Church. After moving to Tangier she attended Swain Memorial Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Stella Freed of Baltimore, MD and Lois Crockett of Tangier; three grandsons, Dennis Crockett of Tangier, Sheriff Robert Crockett of Onancock, and Peter Crockett Jr. of Tangier; and six great-grandchildren. Services were held at Williams-Onancock Funeral Home at 1 p.m. February 3 with Rev. Wade Creedle Jr. officiating. Burial was at Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock. ERNEST H. CONNER Ernest H. Conner, 77, of Newport News died Monday, January 12, 1998. A native of Halifax County, he had been a Peninsula resident for 48 years. Mr. Conner was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as an electrician in the maintenance department after 10 years of service. He was a member of West Hampton Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Catherine P. Conner; his daughter, Fannie M. Dixon of Hampton; two sons, David R. Conner of Gloucester and Ernest L. Conner of Yorktown; one brother, William W. Conner of South Boston; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Daniel Mele Jr. of 1130 Dr. Merritt Road, Nathalie died Sunday, February 1, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 63 years of age. Mr. Mele was born in Youngstown, OH on May 4, 1934 the son of Daniel Mele Sr. and Ann Gaytko Mele and was married to Shirley Ruth Dennis Mele. He was a member of French Lodge #270, VFW #8243 and a Vietnam Veteran. While in the Air Force he was assigned to Presidential Security for the 89th Division. After retirement he served with the U.S. Capital Police for the House of Representatives on Capital Hill. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Marjorie Ann McCauley of Charleston, WVa and Sammi Gilliam of Ashburn; two sons, Daniel Mele III and Donald David Mele, both of Nathalie; two sisters, Patricia Mele of Brookfield, OH and Joan Wilson of Statesville, NC; two brothers, Raymond T. Mele of Youngstown, OH and Donald J. Mele of St. Paul, MN; and four grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. OTHA WEST BURNETTE Otha West Burnette of Danville died Sunday, February 1, 1998 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He was 88 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Burnette was born January 2, 1910 in Pittsylvania County the son of Joseph Burnette and Ethel Barbour Burnette and was married to Lena Taylor Burnette. He was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, Bruce Burnette of Halifax; one daughter, Linda B. Lee of Galax; two brothers, Dallas Burnette and Wesley Burnette, both of Danville; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. JAMES BERNARD ENOCH JR. James Bernard Enoch Jr. of Gladys died Sunday, February 1, 1998 at his home. He was 54 years of age. Mr. Enoch was born in Campbell County on September 3, 1943 the son of James Bernard Enoch Sr. and Frances Monroe Enoch and was married to Carol Winters Enoch. He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, retired from Babcock & Wilcox and a Army Veteran. He was a member of Gladys Ruritan Club, American Legion Post #16, and past president of the United Methodist Men of Mt. Carmel Church. EUNICE BAYLOUS MUNN Eunice Baylous Munn of 2522 Hungary Springs Rd., Richmond, died February 4, 1998 at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond at the age of 52. Mrs. Munn was born in Halifax County on March 15, 1945, the daughter of Overton and Odell Warren Baylous. He was employed at Westminster Canterbury Health Care Unit. Ms. Clark was born in Halifax County on August 17, 1918 and was 79. She was the daughter of the late Oliver Clark and Mrs. Mary Clark. Ms. Clark was a member of the Bethel Grove Baptist Church. February 16, 1998 MALCOLM LLOYD NUNN Malcolm Lloyd "Mac" Nunn, 70, husband of Glenna Griffin Nunn, died Saturday, February 14 at Danville Medical Center in Danville. He was the son of the late Walter E. and Hassie T. Nunn. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of the Clarksville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and as a treasurer for 25 years. He also served as finance chairman for the Concord Baptist Association. Prior to his retirement in 1992, he was president of the Taylor Nunn Insurance Agency, Inc. and had been chairman of the board of Virginia Southern Bank (now NationsBank) of which he was one of the founders. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Twin Rivers Lodge in Clarksville and Past Master of that lodge; he also was a member of the Danville Valley Scottish Rites. Mr. Nunn had served on the Town of Clarksville Council and participated on the Planning Commission. At one time he owned and operated Farmers Tobacco Warehouse and he was Chairman Emeritus of Roof Systems of Virginia located in Richmond. His past time hobbies included golf and participating in the Sandy Fork Hunting Club. The family will receive friends at the home. February 20, 1998 THOMAS CLINTON WARD Thomas Clinton Ward of Route 1, Gladys died Wednesday, February 18, 1998 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mr. Ward was born in Richmond on January 3, 1919 the son of Tom Clark Ward and Gracie Cumby Ward and was married to Lillie Mae Smith Ward. He attended Brookneal Church of God of Prophecy, was an employee of Burruss Lumber Company for 40 years and retired from Allen Morrison Sign Company. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Edward 'Gene' Ward and wife, Judy of Brookneal, Wayne Thomas Ward and wife, Donna of Nathalie; one daughter, Nancy Stevens of South Boston; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Ward. A funeral service for Mr. Ward will be held at 2 p.m. today, February 20 at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel by Revs. Clyde Crowder and Harry Moser with burial to follow at Mt. Carmel Methodist Church cemetery. CHARLES EDWARD STRICKLAND Charles Edward Strickland of Richmond died Saturday, February 14, 1998. Mr. Strickland was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Strickland of Nathalie. He was a member and trustee of First Pentecostal Church of Richmond. Survivors include his wife, Shirley D.
