Bailey Highway, Nathalie died Sunday, June 28, 1998 at his home. He was 69 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Lewis was born in Halifax County on June 12, 1929 the son of Venable A. Lewis and Elizabeth Hudson Lewis. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone. Survivors include one sister, Elizabeth Ann Lewis of South Boston; one brother, Francis O. Lewis of South Boston; special friends, Paul and Janice Torian and Shawn and Shannon Torian, all of Scottsburg. Funeral services for Mr. Lewis will be held today, July 1 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Millstone with Rev. Bob Watts conducting the service. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. ELLA I. EASLEY Ella I. Easley died Thursday, June 18, 1998 at Washington DC General Hospital. She was the daughter of Rev. Thomas H. Easley and Rosa Coleman Easley. A funeral for Ms. Easley was held at the Chapel of Washington Center on June 22 with Revs. Alan Graves and L.T. Graves officiating. Burial was at Glenwood Cemetery in Washington. Survivors include one sister, Leola Easley Graves; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two nieces and eight nephews. LYNWOOD MORGAN IRBY Lynwood Morgan Irby, 71, of Norfolk died June 28, 1998 in a Norfolk hospital. Born in Halifax County, Mr. Irby was retired after 34 years from the Norfolk Naval Supply Center. He was a charter and active member of Carrow Baptist Church in Virginia Beach and member of the Kerns Masonic Lodge in Halifax County. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and Korea. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Clarence Irby, he is survived by his wife, Jean Nichols Irby; two daughters, Donna Duvall and her husband, Greg of VA Beach and Karen Rose and her husband, John of Harrisonburg; grandchildren, Perrin and Morgan Duvall of VA Beach and Meredith and Sarah Rose of Harrisonburg; one sister, Frances Roller of Halifax County; four brothers, Carroll Irby of Richmond, Ray, Kenneth and John Irby, all of Halifax County. A funeral service for Mr. Irby will be conducted Thursday, July 2 at 11 a.m. at Carrow Baptist Church in VA Beach with Revs. Les Redfern and David Ford officiating. GEORGE ALLEN FOY Mr. George Allen Foy of South Boston passed away Thursday, June 25 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 65. He was born in Halifax County May 1, 1933. Survivors of Mr. Foy include three daughters, Sandra F. Williams of South Boston, Cheryl F. Craig and Georgie F. Edmonds of Richmond; one son, Gerald Foy of South Boston; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson; two sisters, Harriet Chalmers and Nevern Smith of Albany, N.Y.; and three brothers, John Foy of Clover, Rev. Coles of McKeesport, PA, formerly of Halifax, died Thursday, June 25, 1998 in McKeesport at the age of 77. He was born in Halifax County on February 16, 1921. Survivors include his wife, Lillie Clark Coles of McKeesport; two daughters, Maxine and Michelle; four sons, John Jr., Larry, Preston and Stevie Coles; and one sister, Ada Coleman. HOWARD EDWIN WILBORN Howard Edwin Wilborn of The Bronx, NY, formerly of Clover, died Friday, June 26, 1998 at Daughters of Jacob Nursing Home in New York at the age of 65. Mr. Wilborn was born in Halifax County on July 27, 1932 the son of Rev. William H. Wilborn and Mary Coleman Wilborn and was married to Anna Collins Wilborn. He was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church and was retired from the New York City Transit Authority. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Earline Wilborn of The Bronx and Elyse Wilborn Burges of Philadelphia, PA; one step-son, Roger Collins of IN; three grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby Wilborn Jones of Norlina, NC, Louise Wilborn Randolph of Los Angeles, CA and Clara Wilborn Chambers of The Bronx; four brothers, Earl T. MATTIE SATTERFIELD BIGGINS Mattie Satterfield Biggins of Baltimore, MD, formerly of Alton, died Friday, June 26, 1998 in Baltimore at the age of 57. Mrs. Biggins was born in Baltimore on December 3, 1940 the daughter of Cardwell Satterfield and Mary Lipscomb Satterfield. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and was employed as a reading specialist with the Baltimore public school system. Survivors include one son, Jon Biggins of Pikesville, MD; one God-daughter, Qurtisa Nelson of Pikesville; and other relatives and friends. She was 85 years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Royster was born in Pittsylvania County on February 5, 1913 the daughter of Edward Coleman Collins and Minnie Herndon Collins and was married to Berkley Dodd Royster. She was a member of Berry Hill Presbyterian Church. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Janice R. and Thomas M. Burton of Scottsburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Alvin D. and Mary Ann Royster of South Boston; one grandchild, Donna Anne Royster of Roanoke. WILLIAM THOMAS WALKER William Thomas Walker of 1033 Cluster Springs Road, South Boston died Tuesday, June 30, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 80 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Walker was born July 4, 1917 in Halifax County the son of William Burton Walker and Bessie Thomas Walker and was married to Rosemond Whitt Walker. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, past member of Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Cluster Springs Ruritan Club. He was retired owner/operator of W.T. Walker Auto Repair and was a veteran of WWII. The funeral will be held at Harmony United Methodist today, July 3 at 2 p.m. with Revs. Harvey Warnick and Michael Sullivan officiating. Mr. Epps was born in Halifax County on September 28, 1917 the son of Julian Thomas Epps and Connie Dunn Epps and was married to Josie Landrum Epps. Mrs. Carter was born in Duerrant, KY on August 12, 1914 the daughter of Rev. William Luther Latham and Agnes Adams Latham and was married to Alfred Henry Carter. She was a member of Halifax Presbyterian Church where she was an elder and organist. She was a former math and Latin teacher with the Halifax County School System having taught at Scottsburg High School, Volens High School, Halifax County High School and Halifax County Junior High. Haley and Laura Beville Haley and was married to Travis Filmore (TF) Hoffman Jr. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a retired School teacher with the South Boston School System. Mrs. Hoffman is survived by one sister, Nancy Haley, of Falls Church; one brother, Rufus B. Haley, of Seveirville, TN; and was predeceased in death by three sisters, Christine Anderson, June Haley and Laura H. Wright and her husband, T. F. Hoffman, a tobacconist, who died in 1994. ERNEST FRANKLIN COON Ernest Franklin Coon, age 77, of 1074 Coon Trail, South Boston died July 4, 1998 in Duke Medical Center.He was born September 20, 1920 in Pittsylvania County and was the son of the late Arthur Franklin Coon and Mary Morris Coon. Mr. Coon was retired from the former Westinghouse of South Boston with 15 years of service. He was a member of Arbor Baptist Church. Mr. Coon also served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Coon was marriedd to the late Mattie Dodson Coon, who died on August 12, 1983. On May 7, 1986 he married Eunice Gentry Coon, who survives. Survivors include his wife, Eunice G. Mr. Ellixson was born on February 14, 1912 in Granville County, NC, the son of Cornelious S. and Nellie Kidd Ellixson. He was married to Beryl Dixon Ellixson. She was the wife of the late Richard Lee Godsey. Mrs. Godsey was born in Halifax County on November 17, 1931 the daughter of Charlie David Rice and Annie Elizabeth Foster Rice. Morningstar Downey of 805 Grove Avenue, South Boston died Monday, July 13, 1998 at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC. Mrs. Downey was born in Halifax County the daughter of John Wesley Morningstar and Marie Elizabeth Tuck Morningstar and was married to Willard M. Downey. She was a member of First Baptist Church, a member of the Henry W. Woodall Chapter #80 of Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron in 1958-1959. She taught elementary school in Halifax County for approximately 40 years, primarily at Cluster Springs Elementary where she was past recipient of the Teacher of the year award. PEARL PURYEAR WILBORN Pearl Puryear Wilborn of Roxboro, NC died Monday, July 13, 1998 in Roxboro Nursing Center. She was 80 years of age at the time of her death. ROBERT THORN TUCK Robert Thorn Tuck of 1635 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died Thursday, July 16, 1998 at The Woodview. He was 81 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Tuck was born in South Boston on July 2, 1917 the son of Parham Franklin Tuck and Rosella Thorn Tuck and was married to Faye Royster Tuck. He was a member of Berry Hill Presbyterian Church. He attended the one room school called High Hill when he was a child, graduated from Central High School in Washington, DC in 1935, VMI from 1935-1936 and was appointed by Senator Burch to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and was there from 1936-1940, 1943-1947 he taught advanced math and field artillery tactics to the cadets at West Point. He attained the rank of Major. He resigned from the Army on October 24, 1948 with an honorable discharge. From 1948 until 1965 he was General Manager and Owner of Eldorado Orchards, Inc. in Placerville, CA and owned an orchard in Camino, CA. He came back to Virginia and went to work for the State Corporation Commission in Richmond as an engineer in 1967. He retired in 1983 and moved back to his native Halifax County. Mr. Tuck is survived by his wife of the home; two brothers, Col. Richard Cabell Tuck of Annandale and Franklin Dandridge Tuck of VA Beach; two sisters, Rosella Davidson of Richmond and Dr. Mary Echols of Fort Defiance. Gray, 52, a reading specialist at Winston Elementary School in Southeast Washington who was a director of the United Planning Organization, the Humane Society of Washington and other organizations, died of cancer July 1, 1998 at the Hospice of Washington. Mrs. Gray began her teaching career in 1969 at the D.C. Association for Retarded Citizens, where she was also a movement therapist. She taught at Queen of Peace Catholic School in Washington before going to work for the District school system in 1987. She had to stop teaching in March because of ill health. Mrs. Gray was born in South Boston and raised in Washington. She was a graduate of Coolidge High school, attended Ohio State University and received a bachelor's degree at the University of Maryland. She did graduate work in education and education management systems at the University of Maryland, University of Dayton, Gallaudet University and Cambridge College. Mrs. Gray helped found a learning enrichment program called Children Helping Identify Learning Links. She was a director and child care committee chair at the United Planning Organization and a volunteer with the Washington Interfaith Network on Housing. She was a Eucharistic minister and lector at Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and a member and an organizer of support groups at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Washington. She participated in the Cursillo movement of the Washington Archdiocese and in the Life in the Spirit Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group. Mrs. Gray was active in People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, testifying before the D.C. Council in support of legislation to outlaw horse-drawn carriages and picketing establishments accused of using cruel practices toward animals. She also was a volunteer with D.C. Special Olympics and Washington Center for Aging Services. Mrs. Gray was president of the How 'Bout Us Social Club. Survivors, all of whom live in Washington, include her husband of 27 years, Vincent C. Gray, former director of the D.C. Department of Human Services, and two children, Jonice Gray and Vincent Carlos Gray; her mother and step-father, Lillian Marable and John Marable; and a brother, Kenneth Goodson. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Jordan Fourqurean and is survived by one daughter, Isabel Fourqurean Steilberg and a son-in-law, Robert Hays Steilberg of Newport News. JESSIE MURRAY EVANS Jessie Murray Evans of 1120 Noblin Avenue, South Boston died Wednesday, July 29, 1998 at her home. She was 89 years of age. Mrs. Evans was born October 10, 1908 in Roxboro, NC the daughter of William Scott Murray and Lula Puryear Murray and was married to Robert G. Evans Sr. She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel today, July 31 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Delia Earnhardt officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Survivors of Mrs. Evans include two grandsons, Robert Glenn Evans III of South Boston and Scott E. Evans of Cluster Springs; two granddaughters, Linda E. Noblin of Fayetteville, NC and Wanda E. Powell of Clarksville; a very special great-granddaughter, Sherri E. Powell and her husband, Gerald of South Boston; a special friend, Kathleen Granger of South Boston; seven other great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. EARL BRIGGS ALLEN SR. Earl Briggs Allen Sr. of 1914 Willow Street, South Boston died Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at his home. He as 67 years of age. Mr. Allen was born November 23, 1930 in South Boston, the son of L.E. Allen and Edna Maude Wilkerson Allen, and was married to Carolyn Lumsden Allen. He was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church, a 50 year member of Faulkner Memorial Lodge #91 AF & AM, an inactive member of American Legion Post 8, a volunteer member of the Halifax County Rescue Squad for five years, and a volunteer member of the South Boston Fire Company for 27 years. He was retired from Earl B. Allen Carpet & Tile. A funeral will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel today, July 31 at 11 a.m. with Revs. John Fariss and Don Fox officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Mr. Allen is survived by his wife of the home; his mother of South Boston; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth A. and Gene E. SALLIE CROWDER CHANDLER Sallie Crowder Chandler of 621 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was 94 years of age. Mrs. Chandler was born February 15, 1904 in Halifax County the daughter of Willie Crowder and Signor Moorefield Crowder and was married to Walter Miller 'Pete' Chandler. She was a member of First Baptist Church, and the oldest member of American Legion Post 8 Ladies Auxiliary. Graveside services will be held Sunday, August 2 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Louise Chandler Walker and L. 'Tubby' Walker of Clearwater, FL; two grandsons, Randy Walker and Charles Chandler Walker, both of Baltimore MD; one granddaughter, Nikki Walker of Baltimore, and one foster granddaughter, Linda Dixion Horvath of Richmond.
