Graveside services for Mr. John Robert "Bobby" Powell, Sr. of Alton, will be held tomorrow at Alton Baptist Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. Mr. Powell, owner and operator of United National Realty-Powell and Associates, died Sunday, May 31, 1998 at his home at the age of 62. He was born December 4, 1935. He was the son of Mr. John Richard "Jack" Powell and Mrs. Justine Granger Powell and was married to Phyllis Hughes Powell. Mr. Powell was a member of Alton Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of Alton; one son and daughter-in-law, John Robert and Mickie Powell Jr. of Youngsville, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and The Rev. Bill McEntire of Red Oak; two grandchildren, John Robert Powell III and Amanda Nicole Powell of Youngsville, N.C.; and two sisters, Clara P. Carver of Halifax and Sue P. Edwards of Poquoson. The Rev. H.V. Conner will conduct services. The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at their home at 2035 Denniston Rd., Alton. EDITH EARP MEELER Edith Earp Meeler, age 72, of 1033 Foster Road, Alton died May 30, 1998 at her home. She was born March 22, 1926 in Halifax County and was the daughter of Henry G. Earp and Nora Hunt Earp and was married to Charles Philip Meeler, Sr. Mrs. Meeler was a member of Calvary United Mehtodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Charles Philip Meeler, Sr.,; one daughter, Pamela Carol Meeler, of Columbia, SC; one son, Charles Philip Meeler, Jr., of Durham, NC; one sister, Barbara E. Demnisky, of Alton; three brothers, U. Fuller Earp, of Blacksburg; and H. Staley Earp, and Curtis N. Earp, o f Danville and two grandchildren. Mrs. Meeler was preceeded in death by a daughter, Patricia M. Barnett, a son, Donald P. Meeler, sister, Elsie E. Loftis and brother, Samuel J. Earp. Funeral services for Mrs. Meeler will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, today (Monday, June 1) at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Darrell Campbell offficiating. LOTTIE LUCINDA PENICK-WALKER Lottie Lucinda Penick-Walker of Halifax, died Tuesday, May 26 at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC, at the age of 80. She was born in Halifax County on May 8, 1918. Mrs. Walker retired from teaching school in 1981. Mrs. Walker is survived by her sister, Eliza Garrett, of Halifax; one grandchild, Michelle Walker, of Glen Allen; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Ragsdale-Walker, of Glen Allen; and a devoted friend, Myrna Ewell, of Halifax. Funeral services for Mrs. Walker were held Sunday, May 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Nathalie. June 3, 1998 PATRICIA LAVONNE YOUNG Patricia Lavonne Young of Nathalie died Thursday, May 28, 1998 at University of Texas Medical Center in Galveston, TX at the age of 27. She was born in Baltimore, MD on January 13, 1971. Ms. Young is survived by her mother, Pastor Joyce Young of Nathalie; two sisters, Almeria Bowey of Nathalie and Michelle Young of Danville; grandmother, Oneza Jones of Nathalie; grandfather, William Jones of Baltimore, MD and a great-grandmother, Leola DeJarnette of Nathalie. Burial was in the Barbour-Moorefield Family Cemetery. TONY WAYNE PURYEAR Tony Wayne Puryear of 1211 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died Wednesday, June 2, 1998 at his home. He was 47 years of age. Mr. Puryear was born February 10, 1951 in Halifax County the son of Jesse Lee Puryear and Kathleen Murray Puryear and was married to Charlotte Mills Puryear. Funeral services will be held at South Boston Church of God on Friday, June 5 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bill Leonard officiating. Burial will take place in Black Walnut Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Puryear is survived by his wife; his parents of South Boston; two daughters, Sandra P. JAMES WILLLIAM LIPSCOMBE James William Lipscombe of Bold Springs died Friday, May 29, 1998 at his home. He was 72 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Lipscombe was born on May 18, 1926 in Itmann, WV the son of William Lowell and Elizabeth Lipscombe. He attended Norfolk State College, majoring in Business and Basic Office Machine Functions. He was first a member of Bethlehem Church of Christ Disciples in Norfolk, and later a member of Dan River Bethel Baptist in Bold Springs and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Maryland. Survivors include one daughter, Elanor Valentine; and two grandchildren, Tasha and Kevin Valentine. Funeral services for Mr. Lipscombe will be held today, June 3 at 3 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. James Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. June 5, 1998 WILLIAM E. (WORTH) COOPER JR. William E. 'Worth' Cooper Jr. of 3849 Bradshaw Road, Salem died Wednesday, June 3, 1998 at his home in Roanoke. He was 47 years of age. Mr. Cooper was born in Halifax County on May 9, 1951 the son of William E. Cooper Sr. and Jenny McGregor Cooper. He was married to Deborah Nelson Cooper. JANIE FISHER CLEMENTS Janie Fisher Clements, 79, of Powhatan, died June 1, 1998. Mrs. Clements was the past president of the Sunshiners Club and the Powhatan Woman's Club where she was voted Woman of the Year in 1993. She was the Christmas Mother for Powhatan County in 1995. She was a member of the Home Extension Club and May Memorial Baptist Church for 37 years where she was active in many mission groups. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Elwood Lee Clements; a daughter and her husband, Betty Jane and Pete Burruss of Powhatan; and two granddaughters, Shelley and Ashley Burruss. She was preceded in death by three sons, Ronnie, Douglas, and Winston and one grandson, John Burruss. Funeral services were held Thursday morning in the May Memorial Baptist Church, Powhatan. NAOMI JACKSON WOODEN Naomi Jackson Wooden of 7194 Mortons Ferry Road, Clover died Tuesday, June 2, 1998 at her home at the age of 71. Mrs. Wooden was born in Halifax County on April 7, 1927 the daughter of Ledgus Jackson and Elizabeth Green Jackson and was married to Charlie Edward Wooden Sr. She was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Wooden Chappell and Vanessa Wooden Carden, both of Clover; one son, Charlie E. Wooden Jr. of Chase City; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Marion J. Snead of Washington, DC; and one brother, Hurley R. Jackson of Clover. The family will receive friends at the home. JOSEPH BARNETT SR. Joseph Barnett Sr. of 1188 Horseshoe Trail, Alton died Wednesday, June 3, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 56. Mr. Barnett was born in Halifax County on May 18, 1942 the son of Arthur Barnett and Englebirth Ragland Barnett and was married to Carolyn Carrington Barnett. He was a member of the Owens Grove Baptist Church and formerly employed by the City of South Boston. Survivors include his wife; one son, Joseph Barnett Jr. of Halifax; three grandchildren; four sisters, Geneva Drumwright, Catherine Williams, Daisy Mae Barnett and Josephine Barnett, all of Alton; two brothers, Willis Barnett of South Boston and Herbert Barnett of Richmond; and other relatives and friends including the devoted Joann Lawson of Alton. June 8, 1998 BERTHA COLEMAN JOHNSON Mrs. Bertha Coleman Johnson of Columbia, Md. and formerly of Halifax County died Tuesday, June 2 in Columbia at the age of 74. She was born in Halifax County October 31, 1923 and was the daughter of the late Mr. Joseph Coleman and Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson Coleman. She was married to the late Mr. Charles R. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Cynthia Y. Crayton of Beacon, N.Y., Mrs. Charlene Savoy of Columbia and Ms. Faith Johnson of Columbia; four sons, Mr. Alfred Leon Coleman of Alton, Mr. Richard C. Johnson of Broadalbin, N.Y., Mr. Wayne S. THELMA MAXEY ROGERS Mrs. Thelma Maxey Rogers of Alton died June 6 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Pardee, Va. on September 15, 1915 and was 82 years old. Mrs. Rogers was the daughter of Thomas Edward Maxey and Vincie Snead Maxey and was married to Will Arvil Rogers. She was a member of Alton Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Will Arvil Maxey of Alton; two daughters, Zelda R. Guill of Alton and Jean R. She was the wife of Charlie Eugene Crews. She was born in Halifax County January 10, 1947, daughter of the late Odell B. Adams and Nannie Calvin Adams. She was a member of Childrey Baptist Church. She was retired from Creative Cake Shoppe. ELIZABETH CLARK ANDERSON Elizabeth Clark Anderson of 6200 Woolridge Rd., Moseley, formerly of South Boston, died June 7, 1998 at Brandermill Woods Nursing Home, Midlothian at the age of 87. Mrs. Anderson was born September 28, 1910 in Halifax County to Samuel Y. and Ludie Hunt Clark. She was married to the late John Hudson Anderson Sr. She was a life long member of First Baptist Church where she was active in the Joy Sunday School Class. Mr. Weatherford was born May 16, 1915 in Halifax County the son of Raleigh E. Weatherford and Mary Gravitt Weatherford and was married to Myrtle A. Weatherford. He was a Army World War II Veteran, retired owner/operator of Allen & Weatherford Grocery, a member of First Baptist Church, and was a member of American Legion Post 8. Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 11 at 4 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Robert M. Fox Jr. conducting the service. Mr. Weatherford is survived by two sisters, Hallie W. DELLA THOMAS NICHOLS Della Thomas Nichols of Wolf Trap Road, South Boston died Tuesday, June 9, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 82 years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Nichols was born in Halifax County on December 3, 1915 the daughter of Richard Thomas and Rosa Lou Thomas and was married to James Frank Nichols. She was the wife of Marvin Byrd Major III. Born July 25, 1976 in North Carolina, she was the daughter of Donald Wesley and Joan Clements Milnor of Long Island, and the late Richard L. Clements Jr. She was a member of Edge Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by one son, Richard Charles Major of Long Island, one brother, Michael Milnor of Gladys, one sister, Angela Milnor of Lynchburg; her maternal grandmother, Nancy Gaddy Clements of Long Island, and her mother in-law and father-in-law, Virginia and Marvin Major Jr. of South Boston. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Richard L. CLABOT JUNIOR BARKSDALE Calbot Junior Barksdale of 611 Easley Street, South Boston died Wednesday, June 10, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 23. Mr. Barksdale was born in Bridgeport, CT on November 25, 1974 the son of Calvin Barksdale and Flossie Venable Barksdale. Survivors include one son, Michael Lawson of South Boston; his father of Bridgeport; one brother, Quincy Venable of South Boston; his paternal grandmother, Lucille Barksdale of Bridgeport; two aunts, Peggy Venable of South Boston and Alice Venable of College Park, MD; and one uncle, Elvin Logan of South Boston. Funeral services for Mr. Barksdale were held Sunday, June 14 at 3 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth DuBose officiating. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery. COL. STONE GREGORY JR. Funeral services for Col. Stone Gregory Jr. of Java will be held today at 11 a.m. at Shockoe Baptist Church by Col. Henry V. Langford and the Rev. Michael Huff. Interment will follow in the Highland Burial Park with full Military Honor Guard and Follow. Col. Gregory died Saturday, June 13, 1998 at his home, Stone's Throw. He was born on October 4, l 917 at Java, the son of the late Samuel Stone Gregory, Sr. and Mary Stone Gregory. Col. Gregory attended Randolph-Macon Military Academy, The Citadel and the United States Military Academy and he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in June 1940. He served for seven years in East Indies, the British Isles, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Europe which include four years of combat command operation. During this period, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel at the age of 27 and he received fourteen American and foreign awards and decorations. After returning to the Pentagon for staff duty, he transferred from the Regular Army to the Active Army Reserve in 1947 and organized and commanded the 168th Reserve Infantry Division with headquarters in Danville, until his retirement from the Army in l 970. Col. Gregory was the owner of Gregory General Farms, Gregory General Store, Gregory Hog Hotel, Gregory Hickory Products and other business interests covering an international area. He served on many boards and commissions over the years including Averett College, Randolph-Macon Academy, American Red Cross, the Pittsylvania County Planning Board, Danville Pittsylvania County Mental Health Board, the Danville Chapter of the Retired Officers Association and the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. He was a life long member of Shockoe Baptist Church and served on the Board of Trustees for many years. Col. Gregory was married to Helen Martin Gregory who predeceased him in 1983. On Feb. 14, 1987 he was married to Doris Hundley Dixon Gregory who survives. In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Helen Wise, Princeton, NJ, Mary Riddle, Atlanta, GA and Sallie Gregory, Java; two sons, Stone Gregory, III and John Gregory, both of Java. He also has a stepdaughter, Lisa Dixon and a stepson Mark Dixon, both of Danville; 12 grandchildren, one great grandson and one step-grandson; two brothers James B. Gregory and Lewis W. June 17, 1998 FRANCES SATTERWHITE YANCEY Frances Satterwhite Yancey, 79, of Sandy Fork Road, Buffalo Junction, widow of Harry Preston Yancey died Sunday, June 14, 1998 in Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC. Mrs. Yancey was born in Durham and was a graduate of Durham High School. During WWII she worked at Wright Machine Shop, later becoming a homemaker. She was a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church. WILLIAM EDGAR SEARS William Edgar 'Bill' Sears, 84, of Cleveland, GA died Monday, June 8, 1998 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Sears was a native and lifelong resident of White County. He was of the Baptist faith, and was a retired self-employed scrap iron hauler. SELMA CAMPBELL ANDERSON Selma Campbell Anderson of 1513 Moore Street, South Boston died June 15, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 84. Mrs. Anderson was born in Damascus on March 1, 1914 to Z.R. Campbell and Carrie Flener Campbell. She was married to Edward Kerns Anderson and was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church. Her survivors include a son: William Edward Anderson of Asheville, NC; grandchildren: Mark Edward Anderson of Troy, MI and Cheryl Marie Wiltsee of Christiansburg and sisters: Margaret C. ANNIE WYNN MYERS Annie Wynn Myers of 1241 Beale Lane, Nathalie died June 15, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 88 years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Myers was born in Halifax County on May 11, 1910 the daughter of Judie Wynn and Ada Mae Jones Wynn and was married to Sydnor D. Myers. She was a member of Liberty United Church of Christ. ANTHONY CLAY 'TONY' FOSTER Anthony Clay 'Tony' Foster Sr. of 5082 Bethel Road, Scottsburg died Sunday, June 21, 1998 at his home. He was 59 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Foster was born in Campbell County on September 26, 1938 the son of Courtney Flournoy Foster and Erna Holland Foster and was married to Linda Smith Foster. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Bethel Ruritan Club, Halifax County Farm Bureau and the Lynchburg Moose Lodge. He was a former employee of the Montague-Betts Steel Co. in Lynchburg for 30 years, after which he was self-employed as owner-operator of 360 Service Center. Survivors include his wife; one son, Anthony C. Foster Jr. and daughter-in-law, Aimee of Lynchburg; two daughters, Ginger F. Mrs. Moorefield was born in Charlotte County on April 17, 1921 and was 77 years of age. She was the daughter of Frank Langford and Tiny Wilson Langford and was married to Herman R. Moorefield. June 26, 1998 KATHERINE BLACKWELL ELLIOTT Katherine Blackwell Elliott, born January 21, 1907, in South Boston, died January 22, 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert A. Elliott Sr.; one sister, Jane Blackwell; and brothers, Henry and John Blackwell. Survivors include one son, Herbert A. Elliott Jr. and his wife, Priscilla; and grandchildren, Andrew and Susan. A long-time resident of South Hill, she taught high school for nine years, was a well known genealogist, and was active in the Methodist Church, the D.A.R., and other historical societies. Her ashes will be interred at Oak Ridge Cemetery today, June 26. WILSON O. EDMONDS Wilson O. Edmonds, 72, of Oak Ridge, TN died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at his home. Mr. Edmonds was retired from the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies, the Energy Research and Development Administration and the Atomic Energy Commission. He worked in Washington, DC, Albuquerque, NM, and Grand Junction, CO, then became resident investigator in the San Francisco, CA office, where he worked for 11 years. Mr. Edmonds was born in Halifax County and was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. After his discharge he went on to receive bachelor of arts and law degrees from the College of William and Mary. He was a member of Central Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah A. Edmonds of Berkeley, CA and Karen L. Edmonds of Knoxville, TN; a sister, Mildred Conner of Takoma Park, MD; and three brothers, Buster O. Edmonds of Nathalie, James H. Edmonds of Halifax and R. Thomas Edmonds of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Edmonds. A graveside service was held Wednesday, May 27 at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, Oak Ridge, TN. THOMAS ABRAHAM RICE Thomas Abraham Rice of Nathalie died Monday, June 22, 1998 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home at the age of 80. Mr. Rice was born in Halifax County on July 31, 1917 the son of Tom Rice and Mary Elizabeth Rice. He was a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Ruffus Rice, Rogers L. He was the son of Mr. Claborne Eli Hall and Mrs. Ora Langford Hall and was married to Alma Jean Hall. Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Alma Hall of Halifax; one daughter, Kathy Ricca of Fayetteville, N.C.; two step-daughters, Patricia Toombs of South Boston and Debra Collins of Mt. She was born August 24, 1905 in Halifax County, and was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Mary Ellen Vaughan Martin. She was 92 years old. Miss Martin is survived by two sisters, Katie Mae Martin of South Boston and Alice Dean of Danville and one brother, Lucas Martin of South Boston. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Commillious and Jesse I. Martin, and one sister, Clara Bass. The funeral was at Brooks Funeral Home yesterday with the Rev.
