Mr. Womack was born in Halifax County on January 13, 1928, the son of Herman Lee Womack and Tassie Nash Womack. He was married to Inez Clark Womack and was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist church. His survivors include his wife; three sisters: Odell Younger of Nathalie, Marie Alderson of Vernon Hill and Kathryn Perkins of Halifax; three brothers: Hugh Womack of Halifax, Harold Womack of Vernon Hill and Robert Womack of Pelham, NC. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 1 at Powell Funeral Home chapel with the Dr. William Trimyer officiating. Burial took place in the Halifax Memorial Gardens. SHERMAN DANCE Sherman Dance of Brooklyn, NY, formerly of Halifax County, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 1998 at the Beekman-Dowtown Hospital in New York City, NY at the age of 75. Mr. Dance was born in Halifax County on June 5, 1922. His survivors include his three sons: Sherman Black, Jerome Black of Bronx, NY and Lendell Vaughn of Brooklyn, NY; two daughters: Janice D. Brown and Velma Dance of Chicago, IL; a sister: Rosa D. Lyons of Mitchellsville, MD; and a brother: James Dance of Halifax. Graveside services were held Saturday, February 28 at the Coleman Family cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Cunningham officiating. AUDREY ANNA GEYER FLEISCHER Audrey Anna Geyer Fleischer of 1045 Newbill School Road, Crystal Hill, died February 27, 1998 at Haifax Regional Hospital at the age of 82. Mrs. Fleischer was born in Baltimore, MD on August 28, 1915, the daughter of the late Frank Adam Geyers Sr. and Minnie Alverta Geyer. She was married to William Norris Fleischer and was one of Jehovah's Witnesses for 57 years. Her survivors include her husband; daughter and son-in-law: Jean and Douglas Stacy of Alton; granddaughter and her husband: Rebekah Jean and Allan G. Howell Jr. of Lebanon; two brothers: Marvin A. Geyer of Baltimore and Frank Geyer Jr. of Pasadena, MD. She was predeceased by a brother: Earl Geyer and sister, Mary Geyer. Funeral services will be held today, March 2 at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Brother Douglas Stacy and Brother Byron Chappell officiating. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens. ELNORA SCOTT SPANN Elnora Scott Spann of Washington, DC died February 27, 1998 at her residence at the age of 78. Mrs. Spann was born in Halifax County on January 9, 1920, the daughter of the late Willie Scott and Evelyn McKinley Garner Scott. She was a former member of the New Shiloh Baptist Church. Her survivors include her brother: Sandy Scott of Nathalie; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Clarise Scott of Nathalie and Mrs. Inez Scott of Appomattox. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 4 at 1 p.m. at the New Shiloh Baptist Church, Nathalie with the Rev. Bobby Harris conducting the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Jones Harper Barksdale Jr. of Java died Sunday, March 1, 1998 in Danville Regional Medical Center. He was 75 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Barksdale was born in Pittsylvania County on July 7, 1922 the son of Jones Harper Barksdale Sr. and Mary Jones East Barksdale and was married to Pansy Jones Barksdale. He was a member of St Paul's Episcopal Church, was a charter member of the Riceville-Java Volunteer Fire Department, and served in the United States Army during World War II. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 3 at 2 p.m. from Scott Funeral Home chapel by Rev. Donald L. Wright and Rev Dr. John S. Ruef. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens. Mr. Barksdale is survived by his wife; one son, Dennis H. Barksdale of Chatham; two daughters, Dianne Barksdale of Blairs and Brenda B. Adams of Ruffin, NC; two sisters, June B. BESSIE CHUMNEY CRUMP Mrs. Bessie Chumney Crump, 75 of Drakes Branch died at Berry Hill Nursing Home on Sunday, March 1, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Thelma of 59 years; four daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Stanley Snyder, Nancy and Robert Dement, Rebecca and Spencer Pugh and Patricia and Chris Petras; seven grandchildren, Deborah Warner, Sharon Swinson, Robert Jr., and Eric Dement, Gregory and Tara Pugh and Peter Petras; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert and Melvin Stevens of South Boston and Archer Stevens of Moore, SC; and two sisters, Mary Barnes and Gladys Dodson of Halifax. Mr. Stevens served for 32 years as General Manager of Walton Lumber Company and as an accountant for Baskervill & Son in Richmond for nine years. He performed as a licensed tax practitioner for 24 years and was a member of the Virginia National Guard. He was a long time member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Brook Hill, where he served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1948 until his death. He served as a vestryman for many terms, including three terms as Senior Warden and was a licensed Eucharist Minister for 24 years. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Interment was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Patterson was born in Nathalie on July 2, 1913, the daughter of Walter E. Owen and Lottie DeJarnette Owen. She was married to the late John G. Patterson Jr. and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the E.C.W. of the church. Her survivors include her daughter: Patricia P. Spahr of Travelers Rest, SC; two sons: Daniel B. Patterson of Burlington and Dr. Henry O. Patterson of Reading, PA; a sister: Elizabeth O. Younger of Nathalie, nine grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Rev. Mr. Humphrey was born in Person County, NC on May 16, 1922 to Charlie and Lovey Clay Humphrey. He was educated in the Person County School System and was the owner/operator of Humphrey and Sons Auto Service and Sales. He was married to Lottie King Humphrey for 43 years. MAE BENNETT Mae Bennett of Thomson, GA died Friday, March 20, 1998 in Providence Nursing Home at the age of 92. Mrs. Bennett was born March 28, 1905 in Campbell County the daughter of Robert Coleman Stone and Mrs. Fred Smith and was married to Albert Lloyd Bennett. She was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church and was a member of the Eunice Sunday School class. Survivors include three sons, David Bennett and Milas Bennett, both of Thomson, and Albert Bennett Jr. of Franklinton, NC; two daughters, Genevee Hayden of Charlotte, NC and Barbara Hailey of South Boston; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Bennett were held Sunday, March 22 at 3 p.m. at Curtis Funeral Home in Thomson with Rev. Randridge officiating. Burial was in Sweetwater Baptist Church cemetery. JOHN S. CONNER S.F. C. John S. Conner died Monday, March 23, 1998 in Medigan Army Hospital at the age of 62. Born May 14, 1935 in Halifax County he retired from Ft. Lewis Army Base of Steilacoom, WA after 22-1/2 years. He also served in Korea, Vietnam and Germany. SFC Conner is survived by his wife, Deana Conner of Steilacoom; one son, Larry Conner of Marysville, WA; three daughters, Ann Martin of Alton, Connie Glenn of Germany and Carolyn Wright of Lakewood, WA; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Harris Conner of Richmond and Paul Conner of Mt. Airy, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Conner and Willie Fuller Conner; also one daughter Romy Conner; and five sisters, Etta, Mary, Nannie, Ora and Annie Bett; also three brothers, Walter, Roy and George Conner. INA LIGON BLOUNT Ina Ligon Blount of 1121 Blounts Crossing Trail, Clover died Tuesday, March 24, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 78. Mrs. Blount was born in Halifax County on March 16, 1920 the daughter of Robert Ligon and Estella Conner and was married to Benjamin Franklin Blount. She was a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband; one son, Bob Blount of Mt. Laurel; two grandchildren, Bobby Blount of Mt. Laurel and Bruce Blount of Charlottesville; one sister, Sara L. Lee of Richmond. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Blount and one brother, Rev. Leonard Ligon. Earl Woodrow Marshburn, who served as part-time director of missions for the Dan River Baptist Association, died Sunday at the Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 83 years old. Rev. Marshburn was a native of Richlands, North Carolina, the son of the late- Thomas A. and Emma B. Marshburn. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Treakle Marshburn. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1939 and from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1942 with a master's degree in theology. Rev. and Mrs. Marshburn moved to Scottsburg in 1974 where he served as pastor of the Scottsburg Baptist Church. Following his retirement from the active pastorate in January, 1981, he served as interim pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church. In October, 1982, he became the part-time director of missions for the Dan River Baptist Association, a position he held for seven years. He was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church. Rev. Marshburn, prior to moving to Halifax County, pastored churches in Bath, Orange, Buckingham, and Pittsylvania counties. From 1952 to 1968, he organized and pastored churches in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. In addition to his wife, Rev. Marshburn is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dennis and Sallie Johnson of Lynchburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Donnie and Marsha Barker of South Boston; four grand children, Nick Johnson of Blacksburg, Meredith Johnson of Lynchburg, and Rebecca and Daniel Barker of South Boston; one brother, T. Haywood Marshburn of Richlands, and one sister, Christine M. Rogers of Chapel Hill, N.C. One brother, Lee Roy Marshburn, and three sisters, Hazel Marshburn, Geneva Levkulich, and Emmie Estelle Marshburn, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 31 at 2 p.m. and conducted by Dr. Dennis Knight. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery, Scottsburg. She was married to Henry Watson Womack and was a member of the Church of God of South Boston.
