Mrs. Scott was born in Halifax County on January 13, 1959 the daughter of Nathaniel Dismuke and Burnell Lacks Dismuke. She was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church and was an employee of Burlington Industries, Inc. Survivors include two sons, Arthur Lee Scott Jr. and Darryl Deion Henderson, both of South Boston; her mother of Clover; two sisters, Patricia Williams of Midlothian and Brenda Smith of Clover; one brother, Samuel Dismuke of Clover; and her maternal grandmother, Thurla Lacks of Saxe. Funeral services for Mrs. Scott will be held Sunday, May 3 at 3 p.m. at Zion Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Jefferson Goode officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Brenda D. Smith, 1184 Rev. Coleman Road, Clover. JOHN EDWARD POWELL JR. John Edward Powell Jr. of 322 Southland Drive, Danville died Wednesday, April 29, 1998. Mr. Powell was born on September 27, 1916 in Halifax County the son of John Edward Powell Sr. and Annie Lovelace Powell and was married to Margaret Hamilton Powell. He was employed for over 40 years by Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, and was a member of Moseley Memorial Methodist Church, where he had been on the Administrative Board. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Gail Powell Bass of Danville; one son, John E. Powell III of Halifax County; two sisters, Louise P. DeVito of Richmond and Virginia P. Swisher of Bethesda, MD; two brothers, Nathaniel T. Powell of Raleigh, NC and William M. Powell of Athens, GA; and three granddaughters. Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 2 at 11 a.m. at Highland Burial Park by Rev. Richard Cobb. The family will receive friends tonight, May 1 at 7:00 until 8:30 and other times at the home. AGNES CONNER ANDERSON Agnes Conner Anderson of 5249 Hunting Creek Road, Nathalie died Tuesday, April 28, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 77 years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Anderson was born in Halifax County on August 15, 1920 the daughter of John David Conner and Mary Lou Wilborne Conner and was married to Ralph Lacy Anderson. She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held today, May 1 at 2 p.m. at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with Revs. Lee Roy Davis, Michael Phillips and Brian Walls conducting the service. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Mrs. Anderson is survived by two daughters, Amy A. Throckmorton and Phyllis A. Wilmouth, both of Scottsburg; two sons-in-law, Carl W. Throckmorton and Henry J. 'Buck' Wilmouth, both of Scottsburg; eight grandchildren, C.W. Throckmorton II, Jeffrey W. Throckmorton, Misty W. Meade, Tony Meade, Kim Wilmouth, Mary Beth Wilmouth, Katie Smith, and Jill Smith; and a special niece, Mary Ingram Gregory. BERNICE BRITTON JONES Bernice Britton Jones of Ohio, formerly of Halifax County, died Sunday, April 5, 1998. Mrs. Jones was born in Clover on November 12, 1919 the daughter of Addie Britton and Emma Coleman Britton. After graduation from the public schools of Halifax County, she enrolled in St. Phillips School of Nursing. After receiving her degree in nursing, she was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Nurse Corp in 1942. In 1960, she received a degree in Nursing Administration from Indiana University. Retiring from the United States Air Force in 1964, after 22 years of active duty, she was among the first African American nurses to attain the rank of Major. Upon retirement from serving her country, she made her home in Columbus, OH and began serving her community. She worked as a substitute teacher for the Columbus public school system, and became very involved in various civic and political causes. She was an active participant in the Senior Friends Program, a charitable organization that assists the elderly. A funeral service was held Thursday, April 16 at Fort Myer Chapel, followed by burial with full military honors, in Arlington National Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Walter W. Jones; one daughter, Gwendolyn J. Harshaw, and son-in-law, Gene G. Harshaw; one grandson, Zayne A. Harshaw; one brother, James W. Britton, and other relatives and friends. MARY WILBORN WATTS Mrs. Mary Wilborn Watts, 85, formerly of 414 McGhees Mill Rd., Roxboro, NC, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998 at the Rose Manor Healthcare Center in Durham, NC. Mrs. Watts was born in Halifax County to Reuben and Libbie Trickey Wilborn. She was married to Rufus James Watts and was owner and operator of a family store in the Bethel Hill community for several years. She was a member of the Bethel Hill Baptist Church and the Women's Missionary Society. Her survivors include her son and his wife: J. Allen and Jean L. Watts of Roxboro; four grandchildren: Ryan Allen Watts of Raleigh, Keith Aaron Watts of Roxboro, Janna W. Haverlock of Cary and Kara Anette Watts of Greenville; two great-grandchildren: Lauren Ashley Watts and Brenner Michael Haverlock. Mrs. Chappell was born in Halifax County on October 11, 1930 the daughter of Clarence Cornelius Moore Sr. and Annie Ruby Jennings Moore. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, Theron Allen 'T.A.' She was born in Brooklyn, NY, on June 22, 1945 and was the daughter of Julio Dela Cruz and Margaret Jackson. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jeohovah's Witnesses. TIMOTHY LEROY MILES Timothy LeRoy Miles of 2108 College Street, Suth Boston, died Friday, May 1, 1998 at Duke University Medical Center, in Durham, North Carolina at the age of 25. He was born in Halifax County, on May 31, 1972 and was the son of Mr. Jackie Owen Miles and Mrs. Serita Beard Miles. He was a member of the Dan River Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Miles is survived by one daughter, Toi S. Mrs. Jones was born in Campbell County on November 1, 1922 and was 75 years of age. She was the daughter of William Puckett and Gladys Puckett Polly and was married to J. Mrs. Carter was born in Halifax County on May 11, 1911 and was 86 years of age. She was the daughter of James Richard Watts and Bertha Vaughan Watts and was married to George Harry Carter. Mrs. Murray was born July 13, 1904 in Bunker Hill, WV the daughter of John David Payne and Fannie Belle Butler Payne and was married to Cedric Murray. She was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School and received her teaching certificate from Shepherd College State Normal School in 1922, which later became Shepherd College. She taught school in West Virginia and Virginia and was a teacher at the School for the Deaf in Frederick, MD. She was owner/operator of Collie Cleaners in South Boston, and was a member of the Eastern Star , the D.A.R. and Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church. Survivors of Mrs. Murray include two sisters, Virginia McDonald of Chambersburg, and Annabelle Smith of South Boston. She was preceded in death by her husband, and two brothers, Nathan Payne and Harry Payne. He attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Brookneal and was married to Linda King Rice. LOUISE BRATCHER ROGERS Mrs. Louise Bratcher Rogers of South Boston died May 7 at The Woodview Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Eddie and Kate Bratcher and was married to the late Grant Rogers. Mrs. Rogers was 86 years of age at the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her loss one stepdaughter, Odell Rogers Thompson of South Boston; four grandsons, Ronald Johnson of Longview, Tex., Kenneth Johnson of South Boston, John M. May 13, 1998 MELVIN GEORGE BATSCHE Melvin George Batsche, 76, of 7320 Snow Hill Dr., Spotsylvania, died Saturday morning, May 9, 1998 at his home. He was the husband of the late Eunice Johnson Batsche. Mr. Batsche was born in Dayton, KY on November 22, 1921, the son of Louis Henry Batsche and Anna Gellenbeck Batsche. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. JOSEPH GUILL Joseph Guill of Danville died Saturday morning, May 9, 1998 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC at the age of 84. Mr. Guill was born in Pittsylvania Co. on June 23, 1913, the son of James Monroe Guill and Nannie Womack Guill. He was married to the late Evelyn Wade Simmons Guill and was a lifelong member of the Baptist Tabernacle. His survivors include three daughters; Mayse Sheffield of Greenville, NC, Etta Brown of Danville and Sue King of South Boston; two brothers: James D. (Jim) Guill of Blairs and Roger S. May 29, 1998 DAVID CARLTON PLEASANTS David Carlton Pleasants of Sanford, NC died Monday, May 25, 1998 at his home. He was 47 years of age. Mr. Pleasants was born on July 22, 1950 in Oxford, NC the son of James W. Pleasants and Winifred Hughes Pleasants. He was married to Janet Hughes Pleasants, a Air Force Veteran and was employed as a Stock Breeder. Funeral services will be held at Florence Avenue Baptist Church today, May 29 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bill Keen officiating. Burial will take place in Virgilina Cemetery. Survivors of Mr. Pleasants include his wife of the home; two daughters, Casey and Stephanie Pleasants, both of Sanford; his mother of Sanford; one brother, Jimmie Hughes Pleasants of Sharpsburg, GA and one sister, Sylvia Lane Pleasants of Sanford. JOHN ELMER CLARK John Elmer 'Jack' Clark of Blairs died Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at Danville Regional Medical Center at the age of 71. Mr. Clark was born September 6, 1926 in Halifax County the son of Roland Clark and Minnie Whitlow Clark and was married to Lillie O. Clark. He was a member of Blairs Baptist Church and was a disabled World War II Veteran. Graveside services will be held today, May 29 at 11 a.m. at Glenwood United Methodist Church Cemetery. Survivors of Mr. Clark include two sisters, Alma G. Howerton of Alton and Edna Green of South Boston; three step-daughters, Margaret Hatchett of Blairs, Ruby Foster and Shirley Wallace, both of Danville; two step-sons, Alvin R. Brooks and William W. Brooks, both of Blairs; 22 step-grandchildren; 53 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was 60 years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Rice was born in Mecklenburg County. She was an employee of Burlington Industries for 42 years and a member of Nelson Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30 at Nelson Baptist Church with Rev. James McAlister officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Rice is survived by her husband, Douglas 'Dee' Rice; two daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Dale Nelson of Nelson, and Sheri and William McGuire of Wylliesburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Kathy Long of Nelson; two sisters, Reda Newton Lowery of Newport News and Shirley Newton Tarbert of Nelson; three brothers, Rommie Newton of Buffalo Junction, Garnett Newton of Nelson and Bobby Newton of South Boston; and seven grandchildren. MADELINE HUGGINS BRADDY Madeline Huggins Braddy of South Boston died Saturday, May 23, 1998 at the age of 57. Ms. Braddy was the owner of Rose Hill Manor Nursing Home and was a member and minister at Trinity Congregational Holiness Church, both in South Boston. A memorial service for Ms. Braddy will be held Sunday, May 31 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Congregational Holiness Church. CLEM NATHANIEL REID Deacon Clem Nathaniel Reid of Nathalie died Saturday, May 23, 1998 in Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 78. He was born in Halifax County on October 22, 1919. Survivors include his wife, Dorethea Reid of Nathalie; one daughter, Cynthia Winbush of Havelock, NC; three sons, Kenneth Reid of Pickerington, OH, Marvin Reid of Moreno Valley, CA, and William Reid of Springfield; five grandchildren; and one sister, Beatrice Reid of Nathalie. Funeral services for Deacon Reid will be held Saturday, May 30 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Nathalie with Rev. James Traynham officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
