He was 83 years of age. Mr. Gomes was born in Georgetown, Guyana in South America the son of Sidney Hawker and Emily Caroline Gomes and was married to Selena Muse Gomes. Survivors include his wife of Halifax; one sister, Adelaide Bullen of Canada; his children, Claudia Bishop of Norfolk, Derek Hawker of Canada, Norma Barkker and Juliette Rodriguez, both of Brooklyn, NY, Yvonne McTaggart of Harold, England, Andrew Gomes and Haywood Woodall, both of Nathalie, Claudette Barlow of Atlanta, GA, Patricia Pender of Riverdale, NY, Jean Gomes of Queens, NY, Ricardo Gomes of Halifax, Yolanda Gomes of Queens, and Sidney Gomes of South Boston; 46 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren. October 5, 1998 EDWARD OWEN WALKER SR. Edward Owen Walker Sr. of 3026 Harmony Road, Alton died Thursday, October 1, 1998 at his home. He was 79 years of age. Mr. Walker was born September 21, 1919 in Halifax County the son of William Burton Walker and Bessie Thomas Walker and was married to Margaret Talbott Walker. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, an Army veteran and a retired tobacco farmer. Survivors include his wife; one son, Edward Owen Walker Jr. of Alton; one sister, Virginia W. Conner of South Boston; one brother, Glenn Walker of Alton; one grandson, Paul Walker of Scottsburg; two step-grandchildren, Roger and Jay Tingen, both of Roxboro, and one step-great-grandchild, Zachary Tingen of Roxboro. GARLAND HAYES LOWERY Garland Hayes Lowery of 2010 Lowery Road, South Boston died Sunday, October 4, 1998 at his home. He was 90 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Lowery was born January 2, 1908 in Halifax County the son of Charlie Hayes Lowery and Clara Hudson Lowery and was married to Dura Hudson Lowery. He attended Shady Grove United Methodist Church and was a retired tobacco farmer. Funeral services will be held today, October 5 at 2 p.m. at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with Revs. Don Davidson and Michael Teixeira officiating. Hagood Highway, Scottsburg died Friday, October 2, 1998 at her home. She was 82 years of age. Mrs. Owen was born in Halifax County on January 1, 1916 the daughter of George Allen and Annie Snead Allen and was married to Robert A. Owen. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Owen and James C. Owen, both of Scottsburg; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, George T. Owen. FRED THOMPSON Fred Thompson of Orange, NJ, formerly of Halifax County, died in New Jersey at the age of 82. He was born in Halifax County the son of Myrtle Thompson. Survivors include two nieces, Antoinette Martin and Cleo Thaxton, both of Halifax County; one cousin, Sarah T. Pointer of Halifax County. Duncan of South Boston died Saturday, October 3, 1998 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was 89 years of age. She was a member of the Halifax-South Boston Hall of Fame, South Boston Recreational Youth Center director for three years and worked with the Red Cross. AUDREY LOGAN HAUSER Audrey Logan Hauser of South Boston died Sunday, October 11, 1998 at her daughter's home in Toms River, NJ at the age of 78. Mrs. Hauser was born in West Orange and was a volunteer at the Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston. She was married to the late John Hauser. She was also predeceased by two brothers: John and Robert Logan. Her survivors include her daughters: Dorothy Coville of South Boston and Arline S. Vitale of Toms River; brother: Richard A. He was born in North Carolina, October 20, 1929, son the late Branch Radford Holt Sr. and Lucille Redman Holt. He was a member of Childrey Baptist Church, an Army Veteran of the Korean War, and a retired employee of The Burrus Company. He is survived by one son, James Radford Holt, of Nathalie; four daughters, Debra H. Francis, of Nathalie; Donna H. Breedlove, of Brookneal; Dorita H. Smith, of Richmond; Darla H. Crews, of Brookneal; three sisters, Colleen Scott, of Nathalie; Molly Farriss, of Long Island, Elnora Holt, of Texas; five grandchildren. Mr. Calloway was a retired farmer and a member of the Riceville Baptist Church. October 30, 1998 WILLIAM NATHANIEL FLEMING William Nathaniel Fleming of Fairfax, formerly of Halifax County, died Sunday, October 25, 1998 at Fairfax Hospital at the age of 62. Mr. Fleming was born in Halifax County on July 8, 1936 the son of the son of Nehemiah Fleming Sr. and Annie Williams Fleming. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Survivors include one sister, Mary Deloris Butler of Dale City; one brother-in-law, Ramon Butler Sr.; and one sister-in-law, Odessa Fleming of Arlington. DOROTHY HALL WRIGHT Dorothy Hall Wright of 2001 John B. Scott Trail, Scottsburg died Saturday, October 24, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 82. Mrs. Wright was born in Halifax County on April 19, 1916 the daughter of Jesse Hall and Millie Johnson Hall and was married to Llewellyn Wright of Brooklyn, NY. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Lucy Hardy and Millie Gomes, both of Scottsburg. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home. REV. PAUL BRIAN SLABACH Rev. Paul Brian Slabach, 37, of Lyndhurst died Tuesday, October 27, 1998 as a result of an automobile accident. Rev. Slabach was born in Coshocton, OH, a son of Monroe C. Slabach of South Boston and the late Orpha Jean Hilty Slabach. He was the pastor of Mountain View Mennonite Church. In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Regina Faye Frey Slabach, the daughter of Preston and Lorraine Frey of Chambersburg, PA; two sons, Ryan T. Slabach and Kendal N. Slabach; one daughter, Stephanie L. Slabach, all of the home; four brothers, Mark L. Slabach of South Boston, David B. Slabach of Alton, John C. Slabach of South Boston and Timothy A. Slabach of Christiansburg; three sisters, Ruth S. Emswiler of South Boston; Rhoda S. Van Benschoten of McGaheysville; and Miriam S. Deacon of Boones Mill; and his step-mother, Beatrice H. Slabach. He was preceded in death by his mother and one brother, James W. Slabach. JACKIE BOOKER BOMAR Jackie Booker Bomar of 5220 J.D. Hagood Hwy., Scottsburg died Wednesday, October 28, 1998 at his home. He was 55 years of age. Mr. Bomar was born in Halifax County on December 15, 1942 the son of John Booker Bomar and Lany Inez Crenshaw Bomar and was married to Frances Womack Bomar. He was a member of Mt. Mr. Chappell was born in Halifax County on March 15, 1911 the son of Allen Chappell and Lizzie Owen Chappell and was married to Nannie Hall Chappell. He was a deacon of Zion Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Hattie Sue Chappell, Charlotte Richardson and Doretha Stovall, all of Baltimore, MD; three sons, James Chappell and Linwood Chappell, both of South Boston and Harold Chappell of Baltimore; one sister, Olivia Bowman of Virgilina; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Chappell will be held Saturday, October 31 at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Thomas Bolden officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
