Miss Ewell was born in Halifax County on April 18, 1907, the daughter of Richard Ewell and Nannie Williams Ewell and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Her survivors include one nephew: Richard Kent of South Boston; six great-nieces: Veroncia Hoffman and Marian Davis of South Boston and four of Baltimore, MD and five great-nephews: Joel Bowman of South Boston, one of Richmond and three of Baltimore. Mrs. Battle was born in Halifax County on April 27, 1939, the daughter of Joseph Williams and Lizzie Ragsdale Williams Younger. She was married to Samuel Battle and was a member of the Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church. Mr. Coates was born in Halifax County on September 4, 1934, the son of Walter H. Coates and Mae Tuck Coates and was married to Faye Martin Coates. He was a member of Liberty United Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ronald C. Coates Jr. of South Boston, and Walter R. Coates and his wife, Tina of Cluster Springs; one brother, Rupert C. George Washington Brown George Washington Brown, 72, of Martinsville, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Mr. Brown as born in Halifax County on February 22, 1927, the son of Robert Estes Brown and Laura Crews Brown and was married to Betty Davey Brown. He served two years in the US Army in Italy during World War II. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation Mr. Brown accepted a position with the city of Martinsville as Assistant City Engineer. He later became City Engineer, Director of Water and Street Division, Director of Public Works, Assistant City Manager, and then Martinsville City Manager, where he retired in 1991 after 40 years of service. Mr. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville, where he served as teacher of a men's bible class, deacon, usher, and on other various committees. He was also a long time member of Martinsville Kiwanis Club, where he recently served on the Board of Directors. He was chairman of the Service Corps of Retired Executives and served on the West Piedmont District Planning Commission. After retirement from City of Martinsville, he served as consultant to other localities in City Administration. Surviving Mr. Brown are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Jim 'Carol' Harding of Madison Heights; one son, George Michael Brown of Alpharetta, Ga.; two grandsons, David and Derek Brown of Alpharetta; two step-grandsons, Eric and Michael Harding of Madison Heights; one sister, Mrs. Irving 'Dorothy' Jennings of Nathalie; and one brother, Maynard Lee Brown of Halifax. Jack Willard Lloyd Jack Willard Lloyd, 78, of Powhatan, formerly of Halifax, died August 20, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Pauline E. Lloyd; two daughters: Dale Groome and Sheila Bowlin, both of Powhatan; three sons: Willard W Lloyd of Clover; Melvin E. Lloyd of Powhatan; and Phillip Lloyd of Crewe; eight brothers and sisters; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Burton Harris M. Burton, age 56 of 101 Lorillard Circle, Danville, died Sunday, August 22 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Burton was a native of Halifax County born January 2, 1943. He was the son of the late Walter Macon Burton and Thurva Sharp Burton. He had lived in the Danville area since 1982. He was employed by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He was a member of the Ingram United Church of Christ. Surviving are one son and two daughters: David W. Burton, Milton, N.C.; Kimberly B. Young, Danville, and Heather L. Burton, Greensboro, N.C. two brothers, Robert B. Burton, of Blanch, N.C. and Bennie Wayne Burton, Halifax; two sisters: Evelyn B. Lloyd, Liberty and Vera Gay Burton, of Lynchburg. One pre-deceased brother, Clarence B. Burton. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 o'clock from the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Michael Pressley. Cecile Glass Mills Cecile Glass Mills, age 76, died Tuesday, August 24, 1999 in the Danville Regional Medical Center. She was a former resident of Heritage Towers and had been a resident of the Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past year. She was born on May 4, 1923, in Halifax County, a daughter of Artie William Glass and Beulah Carter Glass. Mrs. Mills was a member of the Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church and was retired from Virginia Bank and Trust where she was employed for a number of years. She was married to Aubrey Daniel Mills, who died July 22, 1995. She was also pre-deceased by two sisters, Virginia Rice and Dorothy Clark. Mrs. Mils is survived by her daughter, Judy Mills Richardson, of Danville; three sisters, Marie G. Henderson and Edith G. Bradshaw, both of Danville and Nancy G. Adkins, of South Boston; also four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. George Neas. Arnold, 78, of Mabank, Texas, will be held at 10 a.m. today at Elm Grove Church in Van Zandt County with interment in Elm Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Arnold died Monday in Kaufman. She was born June 15, 1921, in Cario, West Virginia to Troy and Frances Smith Collins. Previously of Lancaster, she had lived in Mabank since 1996 and was a member of Elm Grove Church, Women on the Move, and Eastern Star of Dallas. Survivors include her husband, John Arnold of Mabank; daughters, Louise Warrick of Red Oak and Jeannie Preiss of Dallas; son, Floyd Jenkins of Harrisville, West Virginia; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. August 30, 1999 Ora Lee Morris Farmer Bagshaw Ora Lee Morris Farmer Bagshaw, 85, of 207 N. Randolph Road, Fredericksburg, and formerly of Altavista, died Thursday, August 26, 1999 in Fredericksburg Nursing Home. She was twice married, first to the late Kelly Farmer and second to the late Herbert Bagshaw. Born May 21, 1914 in Hartselle, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Morris and Sarah Parker Morris. She was a retired employee of BGF Industries, Inc. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and friends living in Virginia and Alabama. She was preceded in death by a son, Warren Farmer. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. today (Monday) in Green Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Jeff Allen. Melvin Jackson Dunn Melvin Jackson Dunn of Alton, died Thursday, August 26 at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston, at the age of 61. He was born in Halifax County on October 24, 1937. Mr. Dunn is survived by a sister, Joan Boxley, of Alton. Funeral services for Mr. Dunn will be held today (Monday) at 1:00 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church, Alton with interment in the Dunn family cemetery.
