He was 66 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Murphy was born in Halifax County on September 15, 1932 the son of Willie and Virginia Lawson Murphy. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 1 at 1 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. He was the husband of the late Alice Loraine Dowdy Francis. Mr. Francis was born in Halifax County on July 29, 1911 the son of William Thomas Francis and Martha Wright Francis. He was a member of Childrey Baptist Church, a retired employee of Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation, a Merchant and Texaco gas retailer for over 50 years. Michael Jeffrey Sharp Michael Jeffrey 'Jeff' Sharp, 46, formerly of Orange, died at his home in Lewisburg, WV on July 1, 1999. Mr. Sharp was the son of Frances Orrell Sharp and Richard A. Sharp. He was an electrical engineer, a gifted pianist, and a physician who practiced medicine at Greenbriar Valley Medical Center in Lewisburg. He graduated from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in May 1966. Survivors include three daughters, Teresa, Mandy and Emily; his mother; and three brothers, Joseph, Daniel and David Sharp. Jewel Bishop Moore Mrs. Jewel Bishop Moore, for 25 years the director of church activities for First Baptist Church in South Boston, died Friday at Berry Hill Nursing Home. A funeral for Mrs. Moore, 95, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with burial in Halifax Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Robert M. Fox Jr. and the Rev. Frank Riley Jr. will officiate. Mrs. Moore was a Sunday School teacher, former deacon, and past church treasurer, at First Baptist Church. She also was a member of the Tuesday Woman's Club. Mrs. Moore, a daughter of Spotswood J. Bishop and Elizabeth Oliver Bishop, was married to the late Colgate Dennis Moore. She is survived by two children, a daughter, Violet M. Neal, and a son, Hugh M. Moore, both of South Boston. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Kendall M. Turman, South Boston; Dennis Kerby Moore, South Boston; Chrystal N. Lifson, Richmond; Kevin M. Neal, South Boston; Amy R. July 9, 1999 Robert Dewey Mutter Robert Dewey Mutter of Brookneal and resident of Woodview Nursing Home, passed away June 24 at the age of 101. Born in Russell Co. on May 17, 1898, Mr. Mutter was the son of Alice Crabtree Mutter and Charles Mutter. He was married to the late Martha Mason Mutter. Mr. Mutter was the oldest member of the Falling River Baptist Church, Brookneal and a member of the Brookneal Independent Order of Odd Fellows #267. His survivors include his brother: Spencer Mutter of Martin, KY; daughter and son-in-law: Lois and Merle Carwile of Brookneal; grandchildren: Shirley Martin of South Boston, Karen Jones of Salem, Scottie Hamlett, Cheryl Swint, Kathy Carwile of Brookneal and Reecie Carwile of Gladys; seven great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Jones was born May 20, 1918 in Red Oak to Isham Grover and Sula Gregory Garner Jones and was married to Dorothy Whitt Jones. He attended Ferrum Junior College before joining the US Army. He served in WWII, participating in the Normandy Invasion and was awarded a Bronze Star for service during the Battle of the Bulge. Mrs. Neal served her church and Woman's Club where she was elevated to Alice Kyle District President for Woman's Clubs. Later she was elected chairman of the Democratic Party for Halifax County. Following this election she was elected to the Halifax County Board of Supervisor's as the first female. She served three terms as vice chairman, served as the Chairman of Legislative, Transition Committee (South Boston reverting to a town), Chairman of Halifax County Social Services Board. She was a member of the Board for Lake Country Area Commission on Aging, Southside Commission, Halifax Community Action, also serving on two of its Boards, Credit Union for Halifax County and chairman of Head Start. She represented the Board on the Continuing Education of Longwood College, serving as chairman of the Advisory Committee. She also served on several committees for VACO, Legislative, Resolutions, Health and Services and Nominations. She received a commission to the Health Coordinating Council for State of Virginia being appointed by Governor Charles Robb. Also VACO nominated her to the State Fire Services Board and she was given a commission to that Board by Governor Douglas Wilder. Mrs. Neal was appointed to the Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation Board in 1980 and was Chairman of the Personnel Committee. She retired from Virginia Power in 1988 where she worked for 36 years. She served on the Halifax County Board of Supervisors for 10 years Mrs. Neal was a member of First Presbyterian Church of South Boston where she served as President of Women of the Church, taught Sunday School, and served two terms as chairman of the Diaconate. Norvel Thomas Smith Norvel Thomas Smith, 87, of Altavista died Monday, July 26, 1999 in Camelot Hall of Lynchburg. He was the husband of the late Pearlie Dawson Smith. Born April 5, 1912 in Virginia, Mr. Smith was a son of Edward W. and Mary Shumaker Smith. He was a member of Edge Hill Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Lane Company. Survivors include three sons, Larry Smith and his wife, Rachel of Evington, Edward Smith of Macon, GA and Fred Smith and his wife, Kaye of Nathalie; two daughters, Janie Cocke of Altavista and Shirley Short and her husband, Frank of Halifax; two brothers, Garland Smith of Richmond and Roy Smith of Chesterfield; three sisters, Winnie Smith of Richmond, Bertha Toney of Dillwyn and Ann Yarbough of Glen Allen; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral service for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 29 in Edge Hill Baptist Church by Revs. Charlie Harward and Don Cockes. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Ernest Lee Farrar Ernest Lee Farrar, 88, of Chase City died Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Farrar was born in Clover on August 30, 1910 the son of James and Priscilla Farrar. He was employed by Giles and Newcomb Funeral Homes for many years and was employed by Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Inc. until his illness. He was an Elder and member of Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Elk Lodge in Chase City. Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy M. Gary of Roselle, NJ; one son, Ernest Cartrelle Farrar of Chase City; one grandson, Bertram Giles Gary of Metter, GA; three sisters, Annie Jones and Robena Farrar, both of Newark, NJ and Virginia Wilborne of Saxe. Funeral services for Mr. Farrar will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31 at Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church in Chase City with Rev. Sylvester Bullock officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 until 8:00 at Giles-Harris Funeral Home in Chase City. Margaret Farmer Suit Margaret Farmer Suit of 1716 Vaughan Street, South Boston died Monday, July 26, 1999 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was 77 years of age. Mrs. Suit was born in South Boston on May 25, 1922 the daughter of Howard Belt Farmer and Sudie Greenwood Farmer and was married to Daniel Paul Suit. She was a member of First Baptist Church, was a retired librarian with the City School System, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the WMU at First Baptist Church. Mrs. Suit is survived by one son, Howard A. Suit of VA Beach. Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 29 at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Bob Fox conducting the service. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening from 7 until 8:30 and other times at the home.
