Mrs. Hall was born in Halifax County on January 16, 1910 the daughter of Lorenzo and Hallie Bruce Owen Chappell and was married to Howard Taft Hall. She was a member of Jeters Chapel Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Howard H. Hall Sr. of Charlotte, NC and Lorenzo M. Hall of Springfield, MA; one daughter, Marion H. Pedrow of White Plains; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Hall will be held today, June 2 at 11 a.m. at Jeters Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Roderick P. Fitz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Alan Grey Davis Alan Grey Davis, 45, of 2172 Bull Creek Rd., Nathalie died Monday, May 31, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mr. Davis was born in Halifax County on January 26, 1954 the son of Arnita Bomar Davis of Nathalie and the late Ernie M. Davis Jr. He was a member of Clover Bottom Baptist Church and manager of Harris-Teeter in Danville. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Anthony and Julie Davis and Alex Davis, all of Nathalie; a grandson, Dustin Davis of Nathalie; five brothers, Ernie Davis of Gladys, Ted Davis of Monroe, Mitchell Davis of Pamplin, Billy Davis and Don Davis, both of Nathalie; five sisters, Patricia Fisher, Raye Davis, Pam Rudder, Debbie Owen, and Sally Ray, all of Nathalie; his fiance Linda Tuck Rutledge of Red Oak and her children, David, Shannon, Brandon and Brandy; 24 nieces and nephews. Mrs. McGregor was born in Pittsylvania County on August 28,1918 the daughter of William Tanksley and Lelia Kates Tanksley and was married to Allie Wilson McGregor. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She was born in Halifax County on December 8, 1925 and was the daughter of the late Cassie Lee Faulkner. She was married to Howard Edmondson and was a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church. Mrs. Edmondson along with her husband, owned and operated Edmondson's Cleaners for over 34 years and also owned and operated Debra's Diner for over 20 years. He was the son of Leslie Dibrell Mills and Margaret Katherine Blanks Mills and was married to Emelyn Anderson Carr Mills. He was a member of the Beth Car Baptist Church and a founding member of the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department, and a life long tobacconist Mr. Mills was president of C. W. Walters Tobacco Company of South Boston and prior to his retirement was a leaf supervisor for Dibrell Brothers Inc. of Danville. Mr. Mills is survived by: three daughters: Anne M. Sizemore, of Liberty, MO; Rebecca M. Reichlin, of Girdwood, Alaska; Emelyn M. He was married to Mabel Carrington Edmondson and was a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church. He was also a World War II Army Veteran. Mr. Edmondson is survived by his wife: Mabel C. Robert Edward McGhee Robert Edward McGhee of 1060 Old Concord Road, Nathalie died Monday, June 14, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 62 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. McGhee was born in Ridley Township, PA on March 5, 1937 the son of Richard T. McGhee and Frances Bell McGhee and was married to Faye Terry McGhee. He was a graduate of Lynchburg College and Florida Institute of Technology. He served his country proudly for 24 years as a decorated officer in the United States Air Force, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He also commissioned his three sons into the Air Force. He was an accomplished playwrite, poet, author and musician. June 18, 1999 Pocahontas Wight Edmunds Halifax County author Pocahontas Wight Edmunds died Tuesday in Richmond. She was 95. A private burial took place at the cemetery at St. John's Episcopal Church in Halifax. A memorial service for Mrs. Edmunds will be held July 17 at St. John's Episcopal Church. Active in community affairs, Mrs. Edmunds founded the South Boston Woman's Club and the Halifax County Garden Club. She was elected president of the Halifax Woman's Club on two occasions. In 1933, she initiated the Halifax County Homes Tour which features tours of historical homes and directed 15 of those tours. She was chosen Woman of the Year for Halifax County and has been listed in Who's Who Among American Women. Mrs. Edmunds was an active member of the Halifax Presbyterian Church as a Sunday School teacher and chairman of World Missions. And, for 17 years she served as a Brownie Scout leader. A noted author, Mrs. Edmunds wrote 10 books including biographies and sea coast stories of Virginia and North Carolina. She wrote the definitive history of Halifax County (1,800 pages). A book she wrote on U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes was chosen for the White House library during the Kennedy Administration. Mrs. Edmunds also spoke often at schools and club meetings about the characters in her books, especially her ancestor, Pocahontas. In 1956, the Encyclopedia Britannica cited Mrs. Edmunds as an authority on Pocahontas. While most of her books are out of print, they are in continuous use in school libraries, city libraries, and seven state libraries. In 1995, Mrs, Edmunds was interviewed for documentaries on Pocahontas which were shown on television in Japan, England, and the United States. Her manuscripts are at the Alderman Library of the University of Virginia, the Norfolk Public Library, the East Carolina University Library, and at the Huntington Library in Pasadena, Cal. Mrs. Edmunds was a member of The Writers Club and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of Virginia. She graduated at St. Catherine's School as the 1921 June Queen. In 1991, she received the Ellott-St. Catherine's Distinguished Alumna Award. Mrs. Edmunds graduated from Agnes Scott College where intercollegiate debating trained her in research and public speaking. She continued her studies in French and violin in Paris. Mrs. Edmunds was born in 1904 to Pocahontas Wilson and Richard Cunningham Wight. She was married to the late Richard Coles Edmunds who served in the Virginia Legislature, was Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Hampden-Sydney College, and was President of the Second National Tobacco Festival. When the Edmundses retired, they were honored for their 61 years of service to the Halifax Community. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Douglas A. Brown of Fairfax and Mrs. St. George Tucker Grinnan, II of Boca Raton, Fla.; one son, Richard Coles Edmunds, Jr. of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. William Francis Brown and Mrs. Anderson Wade Lamb of Richmond; and one brother, Richard Cunningham Wight, Jr. of Richmond. Mrs. Trivers was born February 10, 1911 in Pittsylvania County the daughter of William Graves and Lillian Robertson Graves and was married to Rev. William Trivers. June 21, 1999 oel Clarence Hawkins Joel Clarence Hawkins, 99, a retired Washington and Northern Virginia real estate broker, died March 1, 1999 at Howard County General Hospital. Mr. Hawkins was born in Halifax County, moved to the Washington area in 1918 and attended Strayer Business College. Before World War II, he worked in the State Department's passport and visa office, then sold real estate. During World War II, he was administrator of the division of radio and radar control for the War Production Board. Later, he returned to the real estate business as a sales manager, then went into business for himself. He retired in 1968. He was a former member of Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church in Washington and the Interfaith Chapel at Leisure World. Survivors include his wife, Doris Erwin Hawkins of Columbia. Dothes Thomas Edmonds Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 1 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul CME Church for Rev. Dothes Thomas Edmonds of 125 Glendale Drive, South Boston. Revs. George Brown and Samuel C. Terry will officiate with burial following in the church cemetery. Rev. Edmonds died Saturday, June 26, 1999 at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 89. He was born in Halifax County on March 20, 1910 the son of Booker T. Edmonds and Mary Venable Edmonds and was married to Millie Stephens Edmonds. Rev. Edmonds was a member of St. Paul CME Church and was former pastor of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Saxe. Survivors include his wife; three sons, John Edmonds, Deacon James Edmonds and Rev. Thomas Edmonds, all of Albany, NY; one daughter, Sarah Kirby of Halifax County; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-grandchildren and two daughters-in-law. The family will receive friends this evening, June 30 from 7 until 8:00 at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home. James Edward Crawley James Edward Crawley of 1041 Back Street, Halifax died Saturday, June 26, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 57 years of age. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 2 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home with Rev. Sylvester Crawley officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Garden Cemetery. Mr. Crawley was born in Halifax County on September 16, 1941 the son of Jannie Crawley Edmond and James Thomas and was married to Yvonne Brame Crawley. He was a member of Owens Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; one daughter Charmaine Crawley of Hamden, CT; two sons, Charles Brame of Scottsburg and James Crawley of Hopewell; three grandchildren; and a devoted friend, Velma Baldwin of Halifax. The family will receive friends at the home. William Booker Dennis Deacon William Booker Dennis of South Boston died Friday, June 25, 1999 at his home. Deacon Dennis was born in Halifax County. He is survived by one daughter, Louise Payne of Brookneal; two sons, William Dennis of Waldorf, MD and John Dennis of Washington; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie Canada of Brookneal; and one brother, James Clark of Brookneal. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 2 at 3 p.m. at Murphy Grove Baptist Church in Halifax with Rev. Herman Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Chapel Thursday evening from 7 until 8:00, and other times at the home, 116 Rosehill Drive, Apt. 4, South Boston.
