Mrs. Veasey was born in Halifax County on April 22, 1918 the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Spears and Martha Ann Wright Spears and was married to Benjamin Wallace Veasey. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and South Boston Garden Club. Survivors include one daughter, Martha Ann Veasey of Richmond; two grandchildren, Stephanie Kaye Veasey and Katie Marie Veasey, both of Monroe, NC; one sister, Marie Spears Williams of South Boston; two brothers, George H. Spears of Roanoke and Jack C. Spears of Newport News; and a number of nieces and nephews. Willie Lee Puryear Sr. Willie Lee 'Billy' Puryear Sr. of 2214 Vaughan St, South Boston died February 26, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 67 years old at the time of his death. Mr. Puryear Sr. was born in Halifax County, on January 26, 1932. He was the son of Fred Berman Puryear and Louise Talley Puryear. He was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and retired from Georgia Pacific. Survivors are four daughters, Connie P. Clark of Easley, S.C., Kay P. Jones of Durham N.C., Karen P. Puryear and Kim P. Bush both of South Boston; two sons, Willie 'Lee' Puryear Jr. and Kelly M. Puryear both of South Boston; and 12 grandchildren. Burial will take place in Oak Ridge Cemetery. John Poker Newcomb John Poker Newcomb of 206 South Main Street, Clover died Saturday, February 27, 1999 at his home. He was 84 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Newcomb was born January 7, 1915 the son of John Newcomb and Della Wade Newcomb and was married to Florence Newcomb. Mrs. Ford was born in Halifax County on February 14, 1909 the daughter of Oscar Wilmouth and Etta Gravitt Wilmouth and was married to Charlie David Ford. Mrs. Walton, 96 years of age, died in a nursing home in Richmond on February 18. She was a daughter of the late Lelia Carrington Bray and Samuel David Bray of Halifax County. For 47 years she taught first grade in Halifax County, Richmond and Alexandria. She was a former member of Millstone Baptist Church in Halifax County and a member of Downtown Baptist Church in Alexandria. Survivors include two sisters, Maggie Bray Wilburn of Richmond and Mildred Bray Arendall of Bassett; one step-daughter, Edith Walton Lovell and her husband, Arthur C. Dewey Wilson Ferrell Dewey Wilson Ferrell of 2009 Oak Level Road, Halifax died Sunday, February 28, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 83 years of age. Mr. Ferrell was born in Halifax County on March 27, 1915 the son of Armistead Ferrell and Beulah Crenshaw Ferrell and was married to Neva Alderson Ferrell. Mr. Ferrell ran the D.W. Ferrell Store at Oak Level for 50 years. He was active in the Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, serving in his later years as a charter member and an honorary member. He as active in Oak Level Presbyterian Church, first as a deacon, as an elder and a church trustee. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World Camp 127 at Vernon Hill. Survivors include his wife of the home; one step-daughter, Patricia Rutherford Hellyer of Rockville, MD; two step-sons, James Wayne Rutherford Sr. of Vernon Hill and Ray Warren Rutherford of Cluster Springs; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred Ferrell of Roanoke; and one sister, Sudye F. She was the daughter of the late William Walker and the late Bessie Thomas Walker and was married to the late Otis V. Conner. She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and a former member of the U.M.W. She is survived by: three daughters, Lois C. Gravitt and Carol C. March 17, 1999 Jennie Phipps Lawson Jennie Phipps Lawson of 825 North Main Street, South Boston, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N. C. She was 83 years of age and had been a prominent member of the business community here for most of her adult life as owner and operator of Faulkner and Lawson Drug Company. She was a member of the family that established the downtown drug store and operated it for more than one hundred years. Miss Lawson was born in Halifax County on June 15, 1915, and was the daughter of William Henry Lawson and Elizabeth Lundy Wyche Lawson. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Miss Lawson is survived by one niece, Sue Lawson Morgan of Fairfax County. Robert Emerson Fultz II Robert Emerson Fultz, II, a former Navy physician who practiced Internal Medicine in Halifax County for seven years, died at Hospice of Cincinnati in Ohio on Thursday, March 18, from compilations of Parkinson's Disease. He was 76. Dr. Fultz, a native of Butterworth in Dinwiddie County, and the son of a country doctor, served in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy from 1943 until 1965. He did his undergraduate work at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, and trained in Internal Medicine in the US Naval Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. After retiring from the Navy as a Captain in the Medical Corps, he relocated with his family to Halifax County, where he practiced Internal Medicine at the Halifax County Community Hospital from 1965 to 1972. From there he moved to the Cincinnati area to work for the William S. Merrill Company in cardiovascular pharmacological research. He later worked in Public Health in Kentucky and as a full-time physician at Drake Hospital in Cincinnati until his retirement in 1984. Dr. Fultz was a member of the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, the Ohio State Medical Association, the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Fultz; two sons, Robert Fultz, III of Madison, GA and George Fultz, III, MD of Columbia, TN; two daughters, Susan Miller of Clemons NC and Carol Frieden of Poquoson; a brother, John Fultz of Virginia Beach; a sister, Alma Binford, of Jacksonville, FL; and five grandchildren. Nora Hodges Wilson Nora Hodges Wilson of 4134 Old Cluster Springs Rd., South Boston died March 27, 1999 at the Woodview Nursing Home at the age of 85. Born in Campbell Co. on March 10, 1914, she was the daughter of Joseph Rosser and Mary Sue Glasgow Hodges. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the First Crossroads Baptist Church and owned and operated Nora's Antiques. Her survivors include her husband: Melvin Metts Wilson; daughter: Mary G. Link of Alton; granddaughter: Cheryl L. Throckmorton of Mechanicsville; grandsons: Ray L. Link of Alton and J. Nelson Link of Richmond and seven great-grandchildren. March 31, 1999 Henry Paul Terry Jr. Henry Paul Terry Jr. of 1079 Holly Court, Halifax died Sunday, March 28, 1999 at his home. He was 67 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Terry was born December 29, 1931 in Halifax County the son of Henry Paul Terry Sr. and Fannie Snead Terry and was married to Ann Whitt Terry. He was a veteran of the Army, Korean Conflict, retired maintenance mechanic with JPS Converter and was a member of Dan River Baptist Church and American Legion Post 8. James Clair Horton Jr. James 'Buddy' Clair Horton Jr. of Roxboro died Monday, March 29, 1999 at his home. Mr. Horton was born in Person County the son of Carrie Walker and James Clair Horton Sr. and was married to Donnie Ann Simpson Horton. He was a retired engineer from American Tobacco Company and he attended Bethany Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Deborah H. Smith of Rougemont; three sons, Dennis Horton and James Michael Horton, both of Hillsborough and Alan Horton of Hurdle Mills; one brother, Larry Horton of Halifax; three sisters, Clara Morgan and Jackie Snead, both of South Boston and Nellie Perkins of Danville; and eight grandchildren. Elizabeth Knott Murray Elizabeth Knott Murray, 78, of 9056 Shotwell Road, Virgilina died Monday, March 29, 1999 at Roxboro Nursing Center. Mrs. Murray was born in Person County, NC, the daughter of Luther and Annie Royster Knott and was married to Bradley Murray. She was a homemaker and seamstress having worked for Ideal Fastener for over 15 years. She was a member of United Christian Church. Survivors include one son, Herbert Murray of Roxboro, NC; two daughters, Doris Vaughan of Elon College, NC and Rita Puryear of Nelson; seven brothers, Mac Knott, Don Knott, Cecil Knott, Bruce Knott, Martin Knott, all of Roxboro, Charlie Knott of Durham, NC and Robert Knott of GA; three sisters, Mary Gentry, Sandra Eakes and Violet Whitfield, all of Roxboro; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Burial will follow in the Virgilina Cemetery. John Willard Lowery John Willard Lowery of 1219 Bold Springs Road, South Boston died Tuesday, March 30, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 83 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Lowery was born June 21, 1915 in Halifax County the son of Warren Lowery and Emma Lowery and was married to Anna Belle Lowery. He was retired from Daystrom Furniture. The funeral will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel Thursday, April 1 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Cynthia Cecelia Mealer Henderson Cynthia Cecelia Mealer Henderson of Vernon Hill died Monday, March 29, 1999 at The Woodview. She was 82 years of age. Mrs. Henderson was born in Charlotte County on September 23, 1916 the daughter of Addison William Mealer and Annie Green Lewis Mealer and was married to Archer L. Henderson. She was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church where she was a devoted member of the choir. She was a retired beauty shop operator in the Vernon Hill area and a former member of Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club. Survivors include one sister, Ruth Mealer Jennings of Richmond; several nieces and nephews; a devoted friend, Evelyn Henderson. She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Archer Henderson, and her husband. Funeral services for Mrs. Henderson will be held today, March 31 at 2 p.m. at Oak Level Presbyterian Church with Rev.
