Ms. Jordan was born in Halifax County on February 10, 1914, the daughter of Edward Jasper Jordan Sr. and Mary Ann Wade Jordan. She was a member of St. Michael AME Church, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #155. Survivors include one sister, Ida B. Jordan of Bloomfield, N.J.; one brother, John Issac Jordan of Halifax; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy L. Jordan of Halifax and Ruth V. Jordan of South Boston. Emma Jean Wells Seamster Emma Jean Wells Seamster, 40, of Gladys, died September 28, 1999, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Seamster was born in Halifax County on July 16, 1959, the daughter of Jimmy Wells and Janie Miller Wells and was married to Owen Seamster. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 2, at 2:00 p.m., at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Chuck Saunders and Clyde Crowder conducting the service. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Friday from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. William T. Steele Jr. William T. Steele Jr., husband of Mary C. Steele, died Wednesday, September 29, 1999. Mr. Steele was a native of Appomattox, and a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Vocational Agriculture Education. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and taught Vocational Agriculture at Varina High School, Henrico County for four years, served as a member of the Federal Farm Credit Board, having been appointed to a six year term by President John F. Kennedy in April, 1963. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, a member and past president of the Country Club of Virginia, and past president of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Steele served as Chief Executive Officer with Southern States Cooperative, Inc. from 1961, until his retirement in 1973. He was an avid hunter and golfer. Survivors include two sons, William T. Steele III of Richmond and Russell C. Steele of Halifax; and five grandchildren. A memorial service for Mr. Steele will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 1 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Mary Christine Alford Mary Christine Alford, 87, of Nansemond County Rehabilitation Home, Suffolk, formerly of South Boston, died September 23, 1999. A native of Scotland Neck, N.C., she was a member of Grove Park Baptist Church. Survivors of Mrs. Alford include two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Rogers of South Boston, and Sylvia JoAnne Edwards of Chesapeake; four sons, Rev. John B. Alford of Littleton, N.C., Raymond T. Alford of Sumter, S.C., Donald A. Alford of Corapeake, N.C., and Howard W. Alford of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Mr. Carrington was born in Halifax County on March 5, 1955, the son of Lovelist Dabbs and Roberta Carrington and was married to Sheena Womack Carrington. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Latarsha Womack of South Boston and Natisha Jennings of Clover; his father of Clover; and one brother, William Carrington of Clover. Crews Green, 88, of Elmsford, N.Y., died Tuesday, September 28, 1999. Mrs. Green was born in Halifax County on March 19, 1911, the daughter of Henry Crews and Peggy Bowman Crews and was married to Louis Green. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Tuckahoe, N.Y. Survivors include one son, Louis Green Jr. of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; and one daughter, Ruth Guthrie of Yonkers, N.Y. Herman Rodger Crenshaw Herman Rodger Crenshaw, 73, of 2137 Willow Street, died September 30, 1999, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Mr. Crenshaw was born in Halifax County on December 10, 1925, the son of Shelton John Crenshaw and Sally Moorefield Crenshaw and was married to Beulah Puryear Crenshaw. He was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the American Legion Post 8, VFW Post 8243, and a lifetime member of the South Boston Fire Department. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Rodger Lee Crenshaw and wife, Teresa W., and Randy Thomas Crenshaw and wife, Deborah T., all of South Boston; four sisters, Baker C. Lavinia Winston Edmunds Lavinia Winston Edmunds died on Thursday, September 30, 1999. Mrs. Edmunds was born in Richmond and educated at Westhampton College where she was Phi Beta Kappa. She was active in St. John's Episcopal Church, the auxiliary at the Halifax Regional Hospital and in the Halifax community. She is survived by her husband James E. Edmunds, III of Halifax and daughters Emma C. Edmunds of Charlottesville, Lavinia Hannaway of Baltimore and Anne Sutphin of Richmond, and her grandchildren, James and Emma Hannaway of Baltimore and Will, Elizabeth and Peter Sutphin of Richmond. Louise Shelton Bennett Mrs. Louise Shelton Bennett of South Boston died Saturday, October 2, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Pittsylvania County on October 14, 1921 and was 77 years old. She was the daughter of Mr. J.W. Shelton and Mrs. Izma Roach Shelton and was married to William Weldon Bennett, Sr. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was an active member of the choir for many years. She was retired from the Halifax County Department of Social Services. Mrs. Bennett is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joanne B. Carter of Halifax and Mrs. Marilyn B. Mitchell of Halifax; one son, Del. W.W. Ted Bennett of Halifax; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of South Boston with the Rev. Bob Fox conducting. Burial will take place in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Virginia Liskey Roberts A graveside funeral was held Friday, October 1, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg for Virginia Liskey Roberts of Halifax. The Rev. P. Douglas Martin conducted the service. Mrs. Roberts died Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 76. Born September 26, 1923 in Harrisonburg, Mrs. Roberts was the daughter of the late Arthur Paul Liskey, Sr. and the late Bertha Malone Liskey. She was married to the late George A. Roberts, Sr. Mrs. Roberts was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in South Boston. She was a homemaker and had lived in Halifax for the past 31 years. Surviving are a son, David Lee Roberts of Ashland, a son, George A. Roberts, Jr. and wife Sharon Roberts of Warrenton, and one daughter, Martha Roberts Chandler, and husband Joe B. Chandler, III of South Boston. A granddaughter, Sarah Beale Chandler of South Boston, also survives. A Halifax County native, Mr. Chaney was married to Josiane L. Chaney. He served in the Navy during World War II, was an expert tool and die maker and machinist, and a dirt-track racer. He opened his Harley-Davidson dealership in 1961 in Pleasant Hill, Calif., where he retired in 1998. Mr. Chaney was involved with many charities, such as the Animal Rescue Foundation and Friends Outside, and often donated Harleys as raffle prizes. He was a former president of the California Motorcycle Dealers Association, a Rotarian and a Mason. He was honored as the 1994 Pleasant Hill Businessman of the Year for his civic contributions. "Bill" Willis, Jr., age 78, of Chase City, died Saturday, October 23, 1999. He attended University of Minnesota, was retired vice president of Fitz Motor Company, a former councilman and vice-mayor of Chase City, member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he was a long time choir member, a former board member of Mecklenburg Country Club, an Army veteran of WWII, a member of American Legion Post #43 and V. F. W., and a volunteer with Halifax Regional Auxiliary. He is survived by his wife, of 52 years, Louise Lawson Willis, son and daughter-in-law, William H. III and Dyan Pittard Willis, Clarksville; sister, Louise Willis Henry, Arlington; grandchildren, Kitric Willis Rutherford, Roanoke; Tyler Monroe Willis, Clarksville. Matthew Aylor Bane Matthew Aylor Bane of 16056 Halifax Road, Java, died October 23, 1999 at The Woodview Nursing Home. He was born in Halifax County, on July 4, 1911 and was 88 years old. He was the son of Matthew Thomas Bane and Lula Miller Bane and was married To Rena Marie Toombs Bane. He was a member of the County Line Baptist Church. October 27, 1999 Artinise Woody Coleman Artinise 'Marie' Woody Coleman of Washington, D.C., died October 17, 1999 at Washington Hospital Center. Mrs. Coleman was born on October 2, 1926, the daughter of Lucy and John Chappell Woody and was married to Warren Coleman Jr. She attended Halifax Virginia Training School, where she graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. She received her Bachelor's of Science degree in Commercial Education from North Carolina Central University at Durham, N.C. and also did post-graduate work at New York University and the University of Maryland. She was employed as a teacher in Washington, D.C., Halifax, and in North Carolina, where she received several Outstanding Teaching Awards. Mrs. Coleman was an active member of Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Church, a choir member of Our Lady of Sorrows and attended the Church of the Nativity. She began her government career as a secretary with the Wage Stabilization Board in 1951, and went to the Atomic Energy Commission in 1955 for several years. She joined National Aeronautics and Space Admiistration (NASA) as a secretary in the Space Science office shortly after the agency was formed in 1958. She worked in the Office of Applications and eventually became secretary to the Associate Administrator of Space Science. Mrs. Coleman was promoted to the Special Assistant to the Associate Administreator for Space Science and later to EEO Program Analyst Officer. During her career with NASA, she received many high level awards for her service. Upon reitirement from the Federal Government in 1987, she worked as the Medical Office Administrator for her daughter, Dr. Pamela Coleman. She was a Golden Soror in Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., where she served as an active member forover 50 years. Survivors include sons, Carlton Maurice Coleman, and Lionel T. Hough and Lynn C. Coleman; twin daughters, Tamara Artinette Coleman and Pamela Warrenette Coleman; one brother, George Woody. Funeral arrangements were not announced. James Wallace Olds James Wallace Olds, 51, of Albany, N.Y., formerly of Halifax, died October 23, 1999 at Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany. Mr. Olds was born in Halifax County. Mr. Duffer was born November 23, 1919, in Charlotte County the son of Sam Paul Duffer and Gracie Duffey Duffer and was married to Irene Dunaway Duffer. He attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, was a former employee of Rochester Button Company, and was a WWII Army Veteran. Virginia Bomar Breedlove Virginia Bomar Breedlove, 68, of 2060 Stage Coach Road, Nathalie died October 27, 1999, in Lynchburg General Hospital. Mrs. Breedlove was born August 5, 1931, in Halifax County the daughter of Floyd Bomar and Flossie Tribble Bomar and was married to Tommy Breedlove. She was a supervisor with Burlington Industries for 15 years and was later owner of Bomar's Texaco in Brookneal. She was a member of Childrey Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, survivors include her children, Gayle Guthrie and her husband, Bobby, of Nathalie, Mike Breedlove and his wife, Beverly, of Brookneal, and Cindy Tyree and her husband, Kevin, of Evington; two brothers, Leroy Bomar of Renan and Bobby Bomar of Austin, Texas; a special niece, Diane Hamlett of Brookneal; a special friend, Marion Viar of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
