Randolph Road, Fredericksburg, and formerly of Altavista, died Thursday, August 26, 1999 in Fredericksburg Nursing Home. She was twice married, first to the late Kelly Farmer and second to the late Herbert Bagshaw. Born May 21, 1914 in Hartselle, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Morris and Sarah Parker Morris. She was a retired employee of BGF Industries, Inc. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and friends living in Virginia and Alabama. She was preceded in death by a son, Warren Farmer. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. today (Monday) in Green Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Jeff Allen. Melvin Jackson Dunn Melvin Jackson Dunn of Alton, died Thursday, August 26 at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston, at the age of 61. He was born in Halifax County on October 24, 1937. Mr. Dunn is survived by a sister, Joan Boxley, of Alton. Funeral services for Mr. Dunn will be held today (Monday) at 1:00 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church, Alton with interment in the Dunn family cemetery. September 3, 1999 Harry Franklin Long Harry Franklin Long, 78, of 126 White Oak Drive, South Boston, died Thursday, September 2, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Long was born May 12, 1921, in Halifax County the son of George Morgan Long and Mamie Satterfield Long and was married to Nancy Williams Long. He was retired from Goodyear Tire Company as a band builder, later worked at Motley's Warehouse for a number of years, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the VFW Ballard Pruitt Post 647, and was of the Methodist Faith. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Candace 'Candy' Cooper of Providence, N.C.; one brother, W.J. 'Bob' Long of Turbeville; four sisters, Mildred Buckner and Virginia Satterfield, both of Alton, Daisy Martin of Halifax, and Lillian Satterfield of South Boston Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 4, at 2:00 p.m., at Barker Funeral Home Chapel in Danville, with Revs. Ann Davidson and Kenneth Williams conducting the service. Nora Gravitt Wilson Nora Gravitt Wilson, 71, of 2013 Vaughan Street, South Boston, died September 1, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Wilson was born in Halifax County on July 18, 1928 the daughter of Ira Addison Gravitt and Mary Averett Gravitt and was married to Arthur Mack Wilson. Lawrence Doughit Whitlow Lawrence Douthit 'Preacher' Whitlow, 75, of Raleigh, N.C. died Wednesday, September 1, 1999 in Raleigh. Mr. Whitlow was born September 25, 1923 in Halifax County the son of Leslie Roby Whitlow and Annie Wilmouth Whitlow. He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, a member of the Elks Club and the American Legion in Greensboro, N.C. He was also a World War II veteran of the United States Navy serving on the USS Nunser, and a retired carpenter with Talley Machinery. Oettinger Jr., 84, of the Clark-Royster Home, Rose Hill Ave., Clarksville, died Thursday, September 9, 1999 at McGuire Veterans Administration Regional Hospital, Richmond. Lt. Col. Oettinger was the son of Frederic N. Oettinger Sr. and Florence Asquith Oettinger. He retired from the Army February 2, 1969, after 30 years of active duty at the U.S. Continental Army Command headquarters, Fort Monroe. At his retirement ceremony he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the nation's third highest award for meritorious service. Among his other numerous military decorations, he was awarded two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars with "V" device, three Purple Hearts, two Awards of Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Master Parachute's Badge. Among his battle stars are the Normandy Invasion (D-Day), The Battle of France, Battle of Ardens (Battle of the Bulge) and the Battle of Central Europe. Lt. Col. Oettinger graduated from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, with a degree in Economics and Army Command and General Staff College. Upon retirement he worked for the Mecklenburg County Health Department for 12 years and was a member of the Clarksville Town Council. He was a past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars and member of the Halifax Regional Hospital Diabetic Advisory Board. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Boydton. Survivors include his wife: Mary Anne Boyd Oettinger of Clarksville; one daughter: Anne Goode Price of Atlanta, Ga.; one son: Frederic N. Oettinger III of Henderson, N.C.; four grandchildren: Mary S. He was a charter member and oldest serving elder in the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Volens. He was retired owner of the Chalk Level Store and was also a retired farmer. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Phyllis Holt and her husband, Talmadge of Emerald Isle, N.C. and Geraldine Amos and her husband, James of Virginia Beach; one sister, Helen Farthing of Blairs; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters, Lawrence Wilson, Fred Wilson, Lillian Younger, Evelyn Riddle, Frances Hill and Nellie Wilson. Mrs. Pinson was born on August 7, 1933, in Clarksville, the daughter of Hunter M. Hudson and Gertrude G. Hudson and was married to Marvin J. Pinson Jr. She was a 1953 graduate of Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She was an operating room nurse in Danville and a nurse for Greensboro College. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and an avid golfer belonging to Starmount Forest Country Club.
