Mrs. Bishop was born in Halifax County on July 3, 1903, the daughter of Dr. William S. Lovelace and Bessie Gates Lovelace and was married to Willam Pleasants Bishop. She was a member of Halifax Presbyterian Church. Survivors include one son, William L. Bishop and wife, Margaret L. Bishop of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two grandchildren, William L. Bishop Jr. of Greensboro N.C. and Scott B. Bishop of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two great grandchildren, Anna Bishop and Bethany Bishop, both of Greensboro. Carr, age 69, of Nathalie, died January 28, 2000, at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville. Mr. Carr was born in Halifax County on March 5, 1930, the son of Willie Mack Carr and Nannie C. Carr and was married to Thelma J. Carr. He was a member of Sunflower Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; five sons, Douglas Carr and James Carr, both of South Boston, Doyle Carr of Columbus, Ga., Dennis Carr of Lum Germany and Ronald Carr of Bambery, Germany; three daughters, Marion C. Staten of Randolph, Frances D. Carr of Richmond and Peggy C. Mr. Carden was born in Halifax County on May 14, 1923, the son of Charlie West Carden and Martha Stroud Carden and was married to Margaret Sims Carden. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church and was also a World War II Navy Veteran. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Juanita Carden Colbert and her husband, Charles Colbert of Washington, D.C. and Regina Carden Hayes of Rochester, N.Y.; two sons, Samuel E. February 4, 2000 Ollie Mae Linkous Gregory Ollie Mae Linkous Gregory, age 86, of 2001 Wolf Trap Road, South Boston, died January 29, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Gregory was born in Rocky Gap on April 17, 1913, the daughter of James Miller Linkous and Sally Bell Stowers Linkous and was married to John Higginbotham Gregory. She was a retired school teacher having taught at Rocky Gap Elementary School in the Bland County School system for 34 years. Survivors include two sons, John Richard Gregory of South Boston and James Edison Gregory of Salem; two grandchildren, Richard W. Gregory of Richmond and Michael D. Gregory of South Boston; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Edison Davis Linkous. Regain Gyder Ragain Gyder, age 77, of 11969 Boston Road, Roxboro, N.C., died February 1, 2000, at Durham V.A. Hospital. Mr. Gyder was born in Lenoir City, Tenn. on August 3, 1922, the son of John Gyder and Martha Gyder and was married to Arley B. Gyder. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include one cousin, Paul Gaston of Ariz.; three nieces, Grace Elliott of Scottsburg, Janice Alspaugh and Norma Newbill, both of Halifax; one nephew, Larry White of North Royalton, Ohio; and special friends Randy and Cathy Talbott of Roxboro. Mrs. Towler was born in Petersburg on April 22, 1909, the daughter of John Whitaker Cotten and Bessie Meade Riddle and was married to William Albert Towler Jr. She grew up in Richmond, attending Farmville State Teachers College, now Longwood in Farmville, before enrolling in and graduating as a Registered Nurse from St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Richmond. She and her family moved to Halifax in 1948 and the family moved to Roanoke in 1970. She returned to Halifax after the death of her husband. In 1988 she moved to Bedford, Texas, returning to Halifax County to become a resident of The Woodview. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Halifax. Survivors include two sons, William A. Towler III of Arlington, Texas and John C. Towler of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; five grandchildren, William Alexander Towler and Mark C. Towler, both of Edmond, Ok., John C. Towler Jr. of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Grayson T. Towler of Boulder, Co., and E. Blake Towler of Fort Rucker, Al; and seven great-grandchildren. Hilda Walton Evans Hilda Walton Evans of South Boston died January 29, 2000. She was the daughter of Robert Walton and Mary James Walton. Mrs. Evans was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church and was married to Col. Donald Henry Evans with whom she traveled extensively for 26 years in the United States Army. She participated in the Officers Wives Club, Post Ladies of the Chapel Activities and the American Youth Activities. She received several awards for her outstanding community work. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Donald and Ingrid Evans of Knoxville, Tenn. and Michael and Renae Evans of Richmond; two sisters, Annie C. Walton and Margaret W. Greene, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, James R. Walton and Marion F. Walton, both of Washington, D.C. Johnson, age 78, died January 30, 2000, at her home in Philadelphia, Pa. Mrs. Johnson was born in Halifax County the daughter of Sydney and Emma V. Wilkerson on February 7, 1921, and was married to Veresia Johnson. Survivors include four children, James J. Johnson, Lauretta Wilkerson, Carolyn Byrd and Denise Avery; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, all of Philadelphia; four sisters, Annie Wiggins and Beatrice Tolbert, both of Trenton, N.J., Gracie W. Brooks and Thelma C. Hargrove, both of South Boston; one brother, Fred Wilkerson of Savannah, Ga. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters. Mr. Wilson was born January 21, 1948, in Halifax County the son of Floyd W. Wilson Jr. and Gertrude Wilson and was married to Lizabeth Keaton Wilson. He was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, and was retired on disability from GKN-Burlington. Funeral services will be held February 5 at 10 a.m. at Lowe Funeral Home in Burlington. She was the daughter of Silas Baker and Winnie Davis Haley Carr and was married to Willie J. Finley. Graveside services will be held today, February 4 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery conducted by Rev. Andrew Bawtree. Mrs. Finley is survived by one sister, Anita Talbott of Teachey. Raye Francis Morris Raye Francis Morris, age 75, of Nathalie, died February 2, 2000, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of Everett L. Morris. Mrs. Morris was born in Halifax County on February 21, 1924, the daughter of Kelly William Francis and Cora Hankley Francis. She was a member of Childrey Baptist Church, the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association, and was a retired director and teacher for the Lynchburg School System. In addition to her husband, survivors include one nephew, Grayson Francis and his wife, Sandra of Nathalie; two nieces, Lee Payne and her husband, Mike of Glen Allen, and Rhonda Brown and her husband, Eric of Ashburn; two great nieces and two great nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Guy W. Francis, and one sister, Virginia (Dit) Thompson. Mrs. Anderson was born in Halifax County on June 17, 1912, the daughter of Charlie Henry Landrum and Nannie Howard Chaney Landrum. She was married to Junious Eugene (Dean) Anderson and was a member of the Center United Church of Christ. Her survivors include two daughters: Bettie A. Srougi of Lynchburg and Geraldine A. Newton of Danville; son: Junious Eugene Anderson of Vernon Hill; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Kate Morris Trickey Kate Morris Trickey, 93, of Harmony, died February 5, 2000 at The Woodview. Mrs. Trickey was born February 2, 1907 in Halifax County, the daughter of John Robert Morris and Nannie Flora Gravitt Morris. She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church where she served as a long time Sunday School teacher. Her survivors include three sons: Robert Henry Trickey and his wife, Frances of Longhurst, N.C.; David Morrell Trickey and his wife, Magdeline of Quinton; A.C. Trickey and his wife, Carol Dean of Mebane, N.C.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, John David Trickey and daughter, Elizabeth Whitlow. Samuel Davis Jr. Samuel Davis Jr., 82, of Clarksville, died February 1, 2000 in the home in which he was born. Mr. Davis was a World War II Navy veteran and was the founder and chairman of the Kinderton Invitational Golf Tournament. He was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in which he helped build. Mr. Davis was the first chairman of the Clarksville Planning and Zoning Commission and served 43 years on the Mecklenburg County Electoral Board which was the longest service held in the history of the Commonwealth. His survivors include his wife: Mary Ross Larson Davis; three children: Samuel Davis III, Peter Nils Davis and Jane Ross Davis; seven grandchildren: Laura Davis, Christopher Davis, Hannah Davis, Sarah Davis, Kirby Saunders, Eliza Davis and Peter Davis and two great-grandchildren: Hannah Davis-Hancock and Lucy Davis-Hancock. Mrs. Turbeville was born in Halifax County on February 17, 1910, the daughter of Dorsey and Elizabeth Coles Claiborne. She was first married to James Williams Jr. and later to Ollie Turbeville. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and taught in the Halifax Co. schools for over 32 years. Her survivors include two sons: James L. Williams of Halifax and Edward D. Williams of Long Island, NY; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law: Gwen and Joyce; son-in-law: Lester Thompson and a devoted cousin: Dorothy Foster of Richmond. Bessie Coles Traynham Bessie Coles Traynham, 74, of 213 Leigh Str., South Boston died Monday, February 7, 2000 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Traynham was born in Halifax County on January 8, 1926, the daughter of Coleman and Hattie McCraw Coles. She was married to Joseph Traynham Jr. and was a member of Ebenezer CME Church. Robert Hays Steilberg Robert Hays Steilberg, 68, died suddenly Friday, February 11 at Riverside Hospital, Newport News. At the time of his death, the Rev. Mr. Steilberg was Associate Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newport News. A 1956 graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, he served churches in Kentucky prior to coming to Virginia in 1959 as Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, South Boston. He was rector of St. Michael's Church, Bon Air from 1966 through 1988 and later served as Rector of Wicomico Episcopal in Wicomico Church. He also served on the staff of Freedom House, an inner-city ministry in Richmond. Since 1966, Mr. Steilberg has served in a team ministry in St. Paul's Episcopal Church with his wife, the Rev. Isabel Fourqurean Steilberg, focusing particular attention on social outreach to the homeless and hungry of the community. In his youth Mr. Francis joined the local CCC camp. He served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific as a Seabee in World War II. After the war he worked as a deputy for Halifax County Sheriff's Department, and a policeman for the Town of South Boston, and served as the school crossing guard for Washington-Coleman Elementary School. George Green George Green, DDS, age 74, of Brookneal, died February 20, 2000, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Dr. Green was born in Halifax County on December 31, 1925, the son of John Collins Green and Frances Oliver Green and was married to Serena Seckman Green. He was a retired dentist after 40 years of practice. He was educated in the Halifax County School system and attended Mars Hill College and the Medical College of Virginia where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree. He also attended Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery in New York City for the study of Periodontology. Dr. Green served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II as a student in the V-12 program at MCV Dental School. He was called to duty again during the Korean conflict and served in the Naval Dental Corps at Parris Island, SC, and later aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bairoko, as head of the dental department. The Bairoko made runs into the Yellow Sea, and saw combat duty off the coast of Japan and the island of Okinawa. Dr. Green was a member of the American Dental Association, Virginia Dental Association, Piedmont Dental Society, and Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity. He was also a Thirty Second Degree Mason, a member of Danville Scottish Rites Society, and a member of Acca Temple Shrine in Richmond. He as selected for the 1973-74 Edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and was a member of Millstone Baptist Church. Catherine Seamster Comer Catherine Seamster Comer, age 56, of 5223 Virgilina Road, Virgilina, died February 22, 2000, at 1314 Olive Branch Church Road, Roxboro, N.C. Mrs. Comer was born June 26, 1943, in Halifax County the daughter of Ira Seamster and Louise Lacks Seamster. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and a textile worker with Burlington Industries. Funeral services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel February 25 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tommy Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in Clover Cemetery. Survivors of Mrs. Comer include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Timothy Wayne Powell and Christie B. Estelle Ferguson Mayberry Estelle Ferguson Mayberry, age 79, of Lynchburg, died February 24, 2000, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Mayberry was born September 26, 1920, in Halifax County the daughter of Stroud Ferguson and Nannie Green Ferguson and was married to Bernard McKinley Mayberry. She was a member of Park View United Methodist Church and was a seamstress with N&W Industries and M&M Cleaners before her retirement. Survivors include one daughter, LaVerne M. Roach and husband, Phillip of Lynchburg; two sisters, Laura F. Johnson of Altavista and Edith F. Lybrand of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren, P. Randolph "Randy" Roach Jr. and wife Cindee of Glen Allen, Kimberly R. Doyle and husband Gerald Jr., Timothy B. Roach and wife Margaret, Cynthia R. Ford and husband William III, all of Lynchburg and Robert C. Mayberry of N.C.; and one great-grandson, Andrew W. Doyle. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Robert C. Mayberry, three brothers and three sisters. A graveside service for Mrs. Mayberry will be held at 2 p.m. February 26 at Spring Hill Cemetery by Rev. Dr. William H. Pollok of Richmond. Rubye Hall Bell Rubye Hall Bell, age 86, of 2304 North Main Street, South Boston, died February 23, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Bell was born in Newton, Ga. on October 20, 1913, the daughter of Walter Hall Sr. and Bessie Mae Hall and was married to Bishop William Y. Bell. She was a member of Ebenezer CME Church and served as a member of the church's Missionary Society, Board of Christian education and was very active with community youth activities. She was also co-founder and past president of Rose Garden Club and was a member of the Cystics Fibrosis Foundation. Survivors include two daughters, Esther B. Coleman of Virginia Beach and Beverly Bell of South Boston; one son-in-law, Leon Coleman Sr.; three grandchildren; and five step grandchildren. Adele Arthur Blanks Adele Arthur Blanks, age 84, formerly of Leda Grove Road, Nathalie, died February 25, 2000, at Medical Care Center in Lynchburg. Mrs. Blanks was born in Halifax County on January 28, 1916, the daughter of Edward Lee Arthur and Dora DeJarnette Arthur and was married to Luther Clements Blanks. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Scott Guthrie and husband, Douglas of Lynchburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Wiley Clements Blanks and wife, Brenda of Chester; two grandsons, Michael Blanks and Kevin Blanks, both of Chester; two granddaughters, Karen Guthrie Rosenblum and husband, Lenny of Oak Hill and Brynn Guthrie of Thousand Oaks, Ca.; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Lindsay Rosenblum of Oak Hill; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances Blanks and husband Ryland of Nathalie; two sisters-in-law, Frances Arthur of Richmond and Evelyn Arthur of Lynchburg. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Labon Arthur and Robert "Jack" Arthur and one sister, Estelle Wisecarver. Eunice Davis Letterman Eunice Davis Letterman, age 59, of 1034 Epperson Lane, Nathalie, died February 25, 2000, at her home. She was the wife of Jackie Letterman. Mrs. Letterman was born in Halifax County on September 10, 1920, the daughter of Julian Davis and Lennis Davis. She was a member of Childrey Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter, Wanda L. Hodnett of Brookneal; three sons, Jackie Letterman Jr. and wife, Patricia of Nathalie, Gene Letterman of Altavista and William Dale Letterman of Nathalie; two sisters, Virginia Walker of Nathalie and Betty Smith of Sugar Hill; and two grandchildren. A funeral service was held for Mrs. Letterman February 27 at 3 p.m. at Childrey Baptist Church with Rev. Rodney Barwick officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
