Mr. Ragsdale was born in Halifax County on February 14, 1922, the son of John Ragsdale and Niccie Medley Ragsdale and was married to Catherine Venable Ragsdale. He was a member of New Vernon Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Gertrude R. Ferrell of South Boston, Carolyn Ragsdale of Richmond, Joyce R. Walker, Barbara R. Richardson and Bonnie R. Trent, all of Glen Allen, and Phyllis R. Drumwright of Roxboro, N.C.; one stepson, Ray Venable of Washington, D.C.; nine grandchildren; and one brother, Johnny Samuel Ragsdale of Halifax. Funeral services for Mr. Ragsdale will be held Saturday, September 2 at 1 p.m. at New Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roger J. Ford officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home. Nannie Mae Lane Nannie Mae Lane, age 86, of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston, died August 30 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Miss Lane was born in Pittsylvania County on May 27, 1914, the daughter of Robert Lane and Mary Lane Blackstock. She was a member of Straightstone Baptist Church. Survivors include one sister, Helen Lane Beale of Nathalie. Graveside services for Miss Lane will be held today, September 1 at Straightstone Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. James Manuel conducting the service. Irene Davis Crews Irene Davis Crews, age 71, of Halifax County, died August 27. Mrs. Crews was born in Halifax County on June 17, 1929, the daughter of Will and Clara Davis. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Survivors include Johnson Crews of Nathalie; two sisters, Bessie Walker of Brookneal and Louise Davis Crews of Nathalie; a guardian son, Tony Crews of Washington, D.C.; one God daughter, Jerlean Waller of Cody. Charles Samuel Whitlow Charles Samuel Whitlow, age 91, of 12148 James D. Hagood Hwy., Clover, died August 31 at Duke Medical Center. Mr. Whitlow was born in Halifax County on April 5, 1909, the son of Samuel Whitlow and Victoria Whitlow and was married to Irene W. Whitlow. He was a member of Clover Baptist Church. Mrs. Gray was born in Halifax County on October 29, 1925, the daughter of Joseph Jordan and Dillie Hall Jordan and was married to James Linwood Gray. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Burlington Industries. Survivors include her husband; three sisters, Elizabeth Gerst of Norfolk, Clara Beasley of Yeadon, Pa. and Ann Marie Haymes of Philadelphia, Pa. three foster children, Harold Baldwin of Sacramento, Calif., Gregory Baldwin of Newark, Del. and Joel Baldwin of Sharon Hill, Pa. The family will receive friends at the home. Bernard Leigh Overton Bernard Leigh Overton, age 79, of Richmond, died August 31 at Brunswick Cove Nursing Center in Leland, N.C. Mr. Overton was born in Prince Edward County on June 4, 1921, the son of John Bondurant Overton and Ida Leigh Bondurant and was married to Mae Slayton Overton. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of Richmond; one son, Bernie L. Overton Jr. and wife Peggy of Leland; one grandchild, Whitney Overton of Leland; one brother, Edward T. Overton of Halifax; one sister, Minnie O. Goodman of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda O. Divley. Henry Cole Parker Henry Cole Parker, age 86, of 448 Crescent Drive, South Boston, died August 31 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Parker was born in Halifax County on March 15, 1914, the son of William Benjamin Parker and Betty Cole Parker and was married to Inez Jennings Parker. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a graduate of the University of Richmond and was field director with the National Red Cross for over 30 years. He was an army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Harriette Lee Parker McArthur of Homer, Ak.; one son, Henry Lloyd Parker of Concord, Calif; and one grandson, Colin Lloyd McArthur of Homer. Reiney Pauline Bassett Duncan Mrs. Reiney Pauline Bassett Duncan of 1015 Bane St., South Boston died Thursday, August 31 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 90 years old. She was born in Halifax County September 20, 1909 and was the daughter of the late Mr. Burel Bassett and Mrs. Maggie Easley Bassett. She was married to the late Mr. Leon Duncan and was a member of the St. Luke C.M.E. Church. She was also a member of the Sinai Order of Eastern Stars. Mrs. Duncan is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Venetra Weaver of Philadelphia, Pa. and Ms. M. Blondine Duncan of South Boston; two sons, Mr. Norman McNeil Duncan and Mr. William McKinley Duncan, both of Passaic, N.J.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one son-in-law; two daughters-in-law; and four sisters-in-law. Mr. Powell was born in Halifax County June 24, 1924 and was the son of the late Elgin E. Powell and Izitti Vaughan Powell. He was married to Ada R. Powell. Surviving are his wife; a step-daughter, Joanne Dean of Walterboro, S.C.; a step-son, Raymond Strange of Newport News; three sisters, Mary Lloyd of Saxe, and Ruby Martin and Eva Trimble, both of Keysville; and a brother, Alton Powell of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Garber was the daughter of Mr. Frank Arendal and Mrs. Lillian Walker Arendal and was married to Mr. Irving H. Garber. She was a member of the Liberty United Church of Christ. Ms. Conyers was born October 16, 1918, in Franklinton, N.C. the daughter of Robert Lee (Bob) Conyers Sr. and Oza Martin Williams Conyers. She served as a Registered Nurse in Danville for 42 years, including employment with The Memorial Hospital and Averett College, before retiring as a plant nurse at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He was a retired independent insurance agent and financial consultant and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina. Adams and Loulie E. Booker Adams. He was a member of Childrey Baptist Church, an U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant. He was vie president of Adams Lumber Company and a retired farmer. He is survived by a special niece and caregiver, Grace G. Margaret Gravitt Cassada Margaret Gravitt Cassada of Old Grubby Road, South Boston died Tuesday, September 26 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was 83 at the time of her death. She was born in Halifax County on September 6, 1917 and was the daughter of Thornton and Evelyn Wilborn Gravitt. She was married to Arthur J. Cassada and was a member of Union United Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Phyllis C. and J. Dan Shaw of Halifax, two grandsons: Aylor Thomas Talbott III of Halifax and Kelly and his wife Deanne Shaw of Earlysville, granddaughter: Ericka Farrell of Baltimore, MD, two sisters: Florence Matze and Francis Moore, both of South Boston and three great-grandchildren. September 29, 2000 Louis Ivory Delaware Louis Ivory Delaware, age 67, of Clover, died September 23 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Delaware was born in Halifax County on August 19, 1933, the son of Ed Delaware and Sylvia Carden Delaware. He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church. Survivors include one sister, Marie D. Sims of Clover; five brothers, Alfred Delaware and Clyde Delaware, both of Clover, Howard Delaware of Charlotte, N.C., Peter Delaware of Greensboro, N.C. and Charles Delaware of East Orange, N.J.; a devoted niece, Sylvia Wilson of South Boston. Michael Todd Hudson Michael Todd Hudson, age 29, of 4096 Cherry Hill Church Road, South Boston, died September 27 at his home. Mr. Hudson was born in Halifax County on October 7, 1970, the son of James Roger Hudson Sr. and Linda Ruth Epps Hudson and was married to Robyn Talley Hudson. He was a member of the South Boston Church of God. Survivors include his wife; his father and step-mother, James and Vera Lee Hudson of South Boston; two brothers, Roger Edward Hudson and James Roger Hudson Jr., both of South Boston; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Epps of Danville; and his mother and father-in-law, Nell and Wayland Talley of Alton. Rosa Lacks Adcock Rosa Lacks Adcock, age 83, of 3149 Ramble Road, Virgilina, died September 28 at her home. Mrs. Adcock was born in Halifax County on May 31, 1917, the daughter of Mount Conner and Zora Riley Conner and was first married to Armistead Lacks, who preceded her in death, and later she married Norman Giles Adcock. Edith Scott Hall Edith Scott Hall, age 81, of 2104 Cody Road, Nathalie, died September 28 at The Woodview. Mrs. Hall was born in Campbell County on May 6, 1919, the daughter of Stanley S. Scott and Sallie Howard Scott and was married to Thomas Richard Hall. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Nancy Hall; one son, R. Wayne Hall of Nathalie; three sisters, Mrs. Baker Roark and Mrs. Jean Harris, both of Lynchburg, and Mrs. Percy Epperson of Gladys; one brother, Ashley Scott of Gladys; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel and Leonard Scott. A funeral service for Mrs. Hall will be held September 30 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev.
