Mrs. Claiborne was born in Halifax County on February 2, 1923. Survivors include five sons, Henry Claiborne of Virgilina, Rev. Ronald Claiborne of Scottsburg, Wayne Claiborne of Richmond, Alvin Claiborne of Halifax and Erwin Claiborne of Honolulu, Ha.; grandchildren; and one sister, Francis Lucas of Fredricksburg. Funeral services for Mrs. Claiborne will be held today, January 3 at 2 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church with the Rev. Byrd Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Ada Willia Pulliam Ada Willia Pulliam of Stratford House, Danville, died January 1 at Danville Regional Hospital. Miss Pulliam was born in Halifax County on December 8, 1908, the daughter of James Munford Pulliam and Sallie McSherry Pulliam. She was a member of Alton Baptist Church, and was a retired school teacher. Survivors include nieces and a nephew. Graveside services for Miss Pulliam will be held today, January 3 at 2 p.m. and Alton Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Ellingburg conducting the service. Sadie Richardson Sadie Richardson, age 79, of 1073 Williams Trail, Halifax, died December 31 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Ms. Richardson was born in Maysville, SC on April 15, 1921, the daughter of Nero Richardson and Allie Montgomery Richardson. Survivors include four daughters, Sandra Jackson and Karen Richardson, both of Halifax, Cynthia Smith and Janice Richardson, both of New York; one son, Kevin Richardson of New York; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Alberta Richardson of New York; and two brothers, Leroy Richardson and Richard Stewart, both of New York. Funeral services for Ms. Richardson will be held January 5 at 3:30 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Monica Spencer officiating. January 5, 2001 Imogene Pruett Henderson Imogene Pruett Henderson, age 83, of Flat Rock, Mich., died January 1 at the Seaway Hospital in Trenton, Mich. She was born August 19, 1917, in Halifax County, the daughter of Morton and Nettie Guthrie Pruett of Sutherlin. Survivors of Mrs. Henderson include her husband, Walter Henderson of the home; three daughters, Janet Phelps Wood of Escandio, Calif., Carolyn Henderson Feick of Neenah, Wis. and Brenda Henderson Tishkof of Gibraltor, Mich.; one son, Marvin Phelps of Allen Park, Mich.; two sisters, Annie Pruett Hodnett of South Boston and Catherine Pruett Carpenter of Keeling. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Pattie Pruett Davis and Thelma Pruett Hudgins; and one brother, Algie Morton Pruett. The funeral service and burial will take place in Flat Rock. George Irvin Evans George Irvin Evans, age 79, of 439 Crescent Drive, South Boston, died January 3 at his home. Mr. Evans was born in Halifax County on March 7, 1921, the son of George Washington Evans and Jennie Thomas McDowell Evans and was married to Alice Snow Evans. He was a charter member and past deacon of Second Baptist Church, and a member of the Woodmen of the World, Camp 106, South Boston. Survivors include one daughter, Betty E. Conner and husband, Danny of South Boston; one son, Jimmy Glass of South Boston; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one half sister, Jean Boswell of Yanceyville, N.C.; and one half brother, Clarence Edward Evans of Danville. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens. . Lewis Frank Short Lewis Frank Short, age 85, of 671 Pine Road, Halifax, died January 3 at his home. Mr. Short was born in Vance County, NC on May 29, 1915, the son of John Benjamin Short and Emma Kearson Short and was married to Mary Anna Frazier. He served his country in the Army with the Anti-Tank Company, 60th Infantry. He received a Purple Heart Medal, Oak Leaf Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. He participated in the following campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normany, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Revelation Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Sandra S. Stevens and her husband, the Rev. Donnie G. Stevens of Rustburg and Kaye S. Dunkley and her husband, Barry T. Dunkley of Danville; three grandsons and one granddaughter; one great-grandson and two great-granddaughters; and one brother, Herbert Short of Bullock, N.C. He was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Pulliam was born September 29, 1913 in Patrick County the daughter of Edgar I. Nolen and Betty Turner Nolen, and was married to Paul Pulliam. She was a member of Fuller Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of the home; four daughters, Glenda F. Pulliam of Hampton, Beth P. Wilbourne of South Boston, Bonnie M. Pulliam of Vinton and Cathy P. Clark and husband Thomas H. Clark of Bassett; one grandson, Christopher Paul Clark of Bassett; and one sister, Vivian N. Wood of Martinsville. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Col. George M. Nolan, Robert J. Mrs. Anderson was born in Halifax County on September 2, 1917, the daughter of Herbert Clay Laundrum and Hester Henderson Laundrum and was married to E. Irving Anderson. She was a member of Center United Church of Christ. Survivors include one son, Mike Anderson and wife Judith of Halifax; one daughter, Carole Lacks of South Boston; one grandson, Edward Atkinson of South Boston; one granddaughter, Lisa Waller and husband Mel of Nathalie; and one sister, Jean Guthrie and husband Charlie of South Boston. She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Lucille L. Franklin. Linwood Matthew Pruitt Linwood Matthew Pruitt, age 32, of 1051 Hitesmill Road, Virgilina, died January 7 in Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Pruitt was a native of Halifax County, a son of David Lee and Betty Jean Jordan Pruitt, and husband of Bernice Tuck Pruitt. He was a truck driver for Rose's Corporation in Henderson, NC, and was of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. January 9 in Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Roxboro, NC by the Revs. Russell Pruitt, Rudolph Jacobs, and Chad Branch. Burial will follow in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Joseph Earnest "Turk" Sydnor Joseph Earnest "Turk" Sydnor, age 47, of 1502 Pine Height Trail, Halifax, died January 4 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Sydnor was born in Halifax County on November 23, 1953, the son of Willie Creed Sydnor and Phoebe White Sydnor Hayes. He was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church and was a former employee of Virginia Department of Transportation. Survivors include four sisters, Bertha Bailey, Phoebe Barksdale, Geraldine Jones and Janie Sydnor, all of Halifax; four brothers, Willie Sydnor of Poolesville, Md, Paul Sydnor and Harry Hayes, both of Halifax and Charlie Hayes of Vernon Hill; his step-grandmother, Theresa White of South Boston. Henry Lee Jones Henry Lee Jones, age 77, of Nathalie died December 31 at his home. Mr. Jones was born in Halifax County on June 11, 1923. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Jones of Alexandria; one daughter, Juanita Williams of Alexandria; one son, Michael Jones of Alexandria; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Annie Sydnor of Halifax, Lottie Traynham of Clover, Mildred Brown of New Haven, Conn. and Marylee Davis of Scottsburg. January 10, 2001 James Spencer Crews James Spencer Crews, born November 17, 1917, died January 7 at the age of 83. Mr. Crews is survived by one son, James 'Jimmy R. Crews; his stepmother, Isabelle Crews of Madison Heights; one sister, Louise C. Daubert of White Plains, NY; and six half sisters, Betty Carwile, Edith Duffield, Phyllis Evers, Dorothy Freeman, Jean Thorp and Joann Woody, all of Madison Heights. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Epps Crews. He was a member of Crystal Hill Baptist Church, was a member of Knockdown Hunt Club and was formerly a member and on the Board of Directors of York Hunt Club in New Kent County. James Nathaniel Nichols Jr. James Nathaniel Nichols Jr., age 73, of 5219 Clover Road, Saxe, died January 6 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Nichols was born in Halifax County on November 16, 1927, the son of James N. Nichols Sr. and Ella Conner Nichols and was married to Thelma Hazelwood Nichols. He was a member of Clover Baptist Church and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife; three sons, James III and Barbara Nichols and Kenneth and Pat Nichols, all of Saxe and Ralph and Vicky Nichols of Clover; three daughters, Nancy Nichols, Carol and Rex Culley and Sharon and Davis Bass, all of Saxe; nine grandchildren, James Jamie Nichols IV and Casey, Stacy Nichols, Jennifer Nichols, Jodie Nichols, Daniel Nichols, Jessica Newby, Justin Nichols, Rachael Bass, and Glen Nichols; two step-grandchildren, John and Candi Snead and one great-grandson, James Nathan Nichols V. Lucile Myra Orr Lucile Myra Orr, age 92, of Dryden, died January 8 at her home. Born in Lee County on July 15, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Morgan Simpson and Emma Cecil Orr. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Cecil Orr and Clyde Wilson Orr and by one sister, Bernice Orr. Mrs. Orr was a teacher in the Lee County System for over 40 years, a member of the Lee County retired Teachers Association and District 0 Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of Dryden United Methodist Church, the Dryden United Methodist Women, and was a former member of the UDC, DAR and Southwest Virginia Historical Society. As a charter member of the Lee County Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, she served as president for two terms and held other offices as well. Under her leadership, the auxiliary established a chapel, initiated televisions in patient rooms, and provided funding for the heliport. Additionally, Mrs. Orr had over 12,000 volunteer hours at Lee County Community Hospital. Survivors of Mrs. Orr include one sister, Pauline Orr Martin of Clover and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Crews was born in Halifax County on November 20, 1919, the daughter of James Anderson Morris and Mary Alice Bowes Morris and was married to Harrell Lee Crews. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, James E. Crews of Fort Mill, SC and Reggie E. Crews of Alton; three daughters, Brenda C. Trammell of South Boston, Shelby C. Elliott and Berniece C. Perkins, both of Alton; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-stepchildren; and two sisters, Willie Puryear and Doris Gordon, both of South Boston. James Arthur Puryear James Arthur Puryear, age 70, of Gladstone, died January 6 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Mr. Puryear was born December 3, 1930, in South Boston, the son of Mary Morris Puryear and Roy Walter Puryear and was married to Edith Coleman Puryear. He was a Marine Veteran of WWII and attended Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three stepsons, James S. Campbell and wife, Teri of Brunswick, Maine, Jerry W. Campbell of Lynchburg and Kevin Mays of Buena Vista; one stepdaughter, Sharon A. Lippard and husband, Stephen of Clearwater, Fla.; four sisters, Maryland Matthews and husband, Luther of South Boston, Janie Perkins and husband, Neil of Nathalie, JoAnn Smith and husband, Bernard and Roberta Coleman and husband, Edward, both of Red Oak; one brother, George E. Earl Rayford Pool Earl Rayford Pool, age 76, of Brookneal, died January 9 at his home. Mr. Pool was born in Campbell County on July 20, 1924, the son of John B. Pool Sr. and Audrey King Pool and was married to Rozell Martin Pool. He was a member of Falling River Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Gideons International and Hospice of the Hills, and was a retired contractor. Mr. Watkins was born in Halifax County on April 28, 1908, the son of James D. and Ferry B. Lester Watkins and was married to Alice Louise Watkins. Survivors include one son, Ray Michael Watkins of Roanoke; two step children, Shirley M. Hill and Edna M. Jennings; three grandchildren, Brian Ray Watkins, Brandy Rae Watkins and D.J.; two sisters, Nettie Pierce of Newport News and Marion Howerton of Buffalo Junction; three step sisters and one step brother. Sarah Elizabeth Wetherington Sarah Elizabeth Wetherington, infant daughter of the Rev. Mike and Sheri Wetherington of Virginia Beach, was born and passed away on January 4 at Va. Beach General Hospital. James Coley Glass James Coley Glass, 80, of 708 Grove Ave., South Boston died Tues., Jan. 9 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County July 25, 1920, a son of J. Coley and Annie Clay Glass and was married to Ruby Rickman Glass. Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Nancy Glass Powell of Midlothian, and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Powell of Oak Island, N.C. and Kathryn Osterhout of Midlothian. White, age 77, of 522 South Main Street, Roxboro, N.C., died January 12 at the Person Memorial Hospital. Mr. White was born in Person County to the late Cyrus Clifton and Vivian Iola Oakley White. He was married to the late Rachel Bright White. Mr. White was a WW II Army Veteran and a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a partner in Brooks & White Funeral Home, Roxboro and had served on the Board of Directors of Roxboro Saving Bank. Mr. White received the Exchange Club Citizenship of the Year award in 1976 and was the oldest active member of the Roxboro Kiwanis Club having held many offices. He was a member of the Long Memorial United Methodist Church. His survivors include his son: Jack "Bill" White Jr. and his wife, Connee of Roxboro; two grandchildren: Katie White of Raleigh, N.C. and Mary White of Roxboro; three brothers: C.J. White of Hurdle Mills, N.C., Lawrence White of Roxboro and Kermit White of Danville. Flossie Comer Guthrie Flossie Comer Guthrie, age 96, of South Boston died January 13 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Guthrie was born in Halifax County on October 20, 1904, the daughter of Charlie Peter Comer and Nora Lee Gravitt Comer. She was married to Louis Robert Guthrie and was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Tuesday Circle. Her survivors include a niece: Harriette Talley Lowder of Columbus, Ohio and two nephews: Joe Talley and Sammy Comer of South Boston. Mrs. Downey was born in Halifax County on February 18, 1916, the daughter of Luther Tysinger and Betty Wilkins Tysinger and was married to Thomas Goodwin Downey Sr. She was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Betty D. Leap and her husband, Charles of Richmond; one son, Tommy Downey and his wife, Barbara of Buffalo Junction; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Merle Silas Solomon Merle Silas Solomon, age 67, of Roxboro, N.C. died January 15 at Durham Regional Hospital. Mr. Solomon was born in Person County, N.C., the son of Silas Merriman and Helen Ashley Solomon and was married to Jean Horner Solomon. He had been in business since 1951 with Solomon Enterprise; was the owner of Solomon Collectible Cars and a member of Warren's Grove United Methodist Church. He endowed the Merle & Jean Solomon Scholarship Fund in 1994.
