He was born in Halifax County April 14, 1916 and was the son of the late George and Addie Wilkins Wilkins. He was married to Mildred Evaughn Sydnor Wilkins and was a member of White Oak Fork Baptist Church. Mr. Wilkins was also a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Wilkins is survived by his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Frances Garner of Newport News, Mrs. Florence Mildred Medley and Mrs. Marian Watkins, both of Virgilina; Mrs.Serita Woody of South Boston and Mrs. Peggie Brooks of Scottsburg; two sons, George Scott Wilkins of Virgilina and Willis Carol Wilkins of Danville; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Johnson, Mrs. Mabel Richardson and Mrs. Hazel Gillis, all of Virgilina; one brother, George G. Wilkins of South Boston; two sons-in-law; and two-daughters-in-law. Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at White Oak Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Faulkner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of the deceased. George Washington Crawley, Sr. GeorgeWashington Crawley, Sr. of Washington, D.C., formerly of South Boston, died Thursday, March 29 at his South Boston residence at the age of 63. Mr. Crawley was the son of the late Walter and Maggie Crawley. He is survived by his wife, one son, one daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, four sisters, and six brothers. Funeral services for Mr. Crawley will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Reginald M. Green of Washington and the Rev.James L. Thomas officiating. Mr. Crawley will lie-in-state for two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. April 4, 2001 Laruth Williamson Mitchell Laruth Williamson Mitchell, 54, of Pelham, N.C., died March 29 in the Pell Care Nursing Facility in Walkertowne, NC. She was a native of Caswell County, N.C., the daughter of the late Armistice Williamson and Novella Swann Williamson, born October 5, 1947. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, was a graduate of Winston Salem State University, and was a school teacher in Halifax County, NC for a number of years. She was married to Alvis (Stephen) Mitchell. Survivors include one sister, Wanda Williamson of Roxboro, N.C.; four brothers-in-law, Bennie, Timothy and Michael of Blanch, NC, and Lealand Luck of Halifax; five sisters-in-law, Candacy, Joyce and Laura of Blanch, Garnett Luck of Halifax and Rev. Annie Lanier of Washington, DC. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley and Henry Williamson. Funeral services for Mrs. Mitchell were held April 3 at 1 p.m. at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel in Yanceyville, NC, with burial in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Hattie Mildred King McCloud Hattie Mildred King McCloud, 66, of The Woodview, died April 2. Mrs. McCloud was born in Charlotte County on September 14, 1934, the daughter of Joseph Edward King and Minnie Lee Newcomb and was married to Floyd Edward McCloud. She was a member of Clover United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Virginia K. Bridges and Etta K. Martin, both of South Boston; and one brother, Elgie King of Scottsburg. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. A funeral service for Mrs. McCloud will be held today, April 4 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bass, 77, of 4079 South Boston Road, Ringgold, died April 2 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Bass was born in Halifax County on April 20, 1923, the son of Claude Clifton Bass and Nettie Hamlett Bass and was married to Frances Scearce Bass. He was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Willing Workers Bible class. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was a retired 1st Sergeant with the US Army. He was a member of the National Guard prior to entering the Army and becoming a member of F Company, 116th Infantry 29th Division from South Boston. Mr. Bass served with the Army during WWII in the invasion of Normandy. He was wounded in Brest, France, received two Purple Hearts and a number of other various medals. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth W. (Kenny and Debra W. Bass of Ringgold; one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy B. Payne and Kenneth Payne of Danville; three brothers, Early Bass and Albert Bass, both of Danville and Dean Bass of South Boston; one sister, Lorene B. Lucado of Appomattox; three grandchildren, Blake E. Bass, Patrick R. Willhite and Kenneth Payne Jr. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Elwood, Willard and Curtis Bass; and one sister, Connie B. Collie. Pearle Ruth Walker Bobrowiecki Pearle Ruth Walker Bobrowiecki, 80, of Fairhaven, died March 27. She was the widow of Kasimierz Bobrowiecki. Mrs. Bobrowiecki was born in Woolwine, the daughter of the late Hammett and Hilda Hubbard Walker. She was a member of Centre United Methodist Church, where she was a member of its women's group and chairwoman of the administration board and pastor-parish relations. She was a graduate of Halifax High School and attended the Kinyon Campbell Business School, and was a member of the Nemasket Line Dancers of Middleboro. Survivors of Mrs. Bobrowiecki include one son, Joseph Bobrowiecki of Middleboro; three sisters, Marcell Hayes of Solomon, Md., Nancy Williams of Miami Shores, Fla., and Hilda Williamson of Alton; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Rodney Eugene Cousins Rodney Eugene Cousins, 32, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Clover, died April 1 in Clover. Mr. Cousins was born in Halifax County on October 29, 1968, the son of Jesse Cousins and Gloria Hill Cousins, and was married to Pamela Robertson Cousins. He was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Herndon was born in Pittsylvania County on October 4, 1933, the son of Johnny Herndon and Odell Payne Herndon. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Survivors include his mother; one sister, Adell Herndon; three brothers, Albert Lee, Frank and Sherman Herndon; one sister-in-law, Nannie Belle Herndon; and other relatives and friends. Burial will take place in Old Second Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery. Ruth Bray Hudson Ruth Bray Hudson, 65, of 715 Magnolia Drive, South Boston, died April 4 at her home. Mrs. Hudson was born in Halifax County on January 4, 1936, the daughter of the late Versie J. Bray and Annie Arrington Bray, and was married to Jefferson "Jeff" Hudson. She was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church and was employed as a sales person with U.S. Factory Outlet. A funeral service will be held April 7 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Midlothian, the American Dietetic Association, the Richmond Dietetic Association, and the Virginia Tech Alumni Association. Survivors of Mrs. Loftis include her husband, Dennis M. Loftis; one son, Brian K. Loftis; one brother, Jerry D. Watkins and his wife, Merle of Chesterfield; one sister, Marilyn W. Mrs. Lorene Compton Palmer Mrs. Lorene Compton Palmer of Richmond and formerly of the Hunting Creek community died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond. She was born in Halifax County July 9, 1922 and was 78 years old. Mrs. Palmer was the daughter of Joseph F. and Emma Layne Compton and was married to James T. Palmer. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church of Richmond. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean P. and Joseph W. Hudgins and Sandra P. and Ray S. Harris, all of Richmond; one son and daughter-in-law, James T. and Susan Palmer of Richmond; one sister, Ellen C. Hammack of Richmond; one brother, Carroll W. Ms. Talley was born in Halifax County on November 18,1930, the daughter of the late Irvin Talley and Bettie Gravitt Talley. She was a member of White Oak Fork Baptist and was a retired employee of the Army and Air Force Exchange in Alexandria. Survivors include five daughters, Barbara Hamlette of Annandale, Judy Nadeau of Alexandria, Betty Balch and Grace Talley, both of Dumfries and Edith Tune of Nathalie; three sons, James Talley of Clarksville, Arthur Talley of Washington, D.C. and Larry Talley of Annandale; one sister, Elaine Talley of Virgilina; two brothers, Joseph Talley of Alexandria and Otis Talley of Baltimore, Md.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ruth Bray Hudson Coral Haywood Minnix, 79, of Gladys, died April 6 at his home. He was the husband of the late Branchie Trent Minnix. Born December 23, 1921, in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Edward Gordon Minnix and Florine Evans Minnix. He was a member of Edge Baptist Church, a retired farmer, and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Mrs. Holt was born in Halifax County on November 16, 1913, the daughter of the late Royal and Virginia Street Easley. She was married to the late Robert Holt and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. She was married to Ernest Linwood Wright and was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. Mr. Robertson was born in Chase City on October 27, 1927, the son of the late Frank and Mary L. Robertson. He was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Skipwith, and employed by Owen Supply and Colgate Companies. He was married to Ruby O. Robertson who preceded him in death. Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia R. Wilborne of South Boston and Rose R. Johnson of Jersey City, N.J.; three sons, Charles T. Robertson of South Hill, Ervin T. Robertson and Ernest C. Burial will follow in Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Chase City. Hattie Hamilton Ragland Hattie Hamilton Ragland of Portsmouth died April 7 at Sentara Nursing Center. She was born October 14, 1915, in South Boston, the daughter of the late Hattie Edith Wilkes Hamilton and Robert Ray Hamilton, and was married to J. Farley Ragland Mrs. Ragland earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education at St. Paul's College and a Master's degree at the University of Virginia. She taught all elementary grade levels and served as College Supervisor in Elementary Education at St. Paul's. She also worked at the State Department in Richmond as an assistant supervisor of elementary education and was promoted to the position of supervisor of Language Arts, becoming the first black to do so at the state level. Some of her accomplishments were: serving a President of the State Department chapter of the Virginia Education Association; inclusion in Who's Who in Virginia based on professional achievements; production of outstanding script writing for the Governor's Conference on Reading, and appointment to the state selection committee for the 1979 Governor's School for the Gifted. Mrs. Ragland was a member of Treble Clef and Book Lovers' Club of Richmond and served as Grammateus and Basileus of Gamma Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in Lawrenceville and was a charter member of the Southside Chapter of Links, Inc. Survivors include two daughters, Lucia R. Windley of Portsmouth and Irma R. Moore of Cleveland, Ohio; two sons, Leon C. Ragland of Chesapeake and Lawrence C. Ragland of New York City; granddaughters, Lauren M. Siggers, Angela M. Christopher, Cheryl L. Moore, all of Cleveland, Sonja M. Siler of Philadelphia, Pa., Jennifer N. Ragland of Chesapeake and Lynelle M. Ragland of Chapel Hill, N.C.; grandsons, Redell R. Windley and Marc. H. Windley of Portsmouth; seven great-grandchildren; and two goddaughters. George William Hite George William Hite, 63, of 1036 Wolf Trap Road, South Boston, died April 9 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Hite was born in Mecklenburg County on July 13, 1937, the son of Clyde Hite Sr. and Evannah Buchannan Hite and was married to Dorothy Smith Hite. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle, and was retired from Rochester Button. Survivors include his wife; his mother of Louisburg, N.C.; one daughter, Jean H. Clay of South Boston; one sister, Judy H. Murray of Oxford, N.C.; one half-brother, Clyde Hite of South Boston; one half-sister, Martha Ann Hite of South Boston; and one granddaughter, Bettie Marie Clay. He was a retired security guard for Collins & Aikman Corp. and was of the Baptist Faith. He was a member of First Baptist Church, and was a vice president and 37-year employee of Sovran Bank. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Ann O. Ozmer of Sutherlin; one son, Harry W. Owen of Sutherlin; one grandson, Adam Webb Ozmer of Ashland; and one sister and brother-in-law, Nixie O. and William Thompson of Sutherlin. Charlie Randolph Bruce Charlie Randolph Bruce, 76, of Turbeville died April 9 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Waddle Billy M. Waddle, 85, died April 10 at his home in Prescott, Ariz. He was born November 23, 1915, in Greenville, Texas, to William A. and Mabel Swann Waddle. Mr. Waddle served in the U.S. Army from March 1941 to December 1945. He entered the service as a private in a cavalry assignment and was discharged following three years of service in the Pacific Theater as a captain, unit commander. He graduated with a doctorate in plant breeding from Texas A&M University in 1954. He was an agriculture research administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mr. Waddle started his career at the U.S. Field Station in Sacaton, and after more than 30 years ended his career in Beltsville, Md. His expertise was in the research and development of cotton, and as a consultant for the Rockefeller Foundations he traveled around the world helping countries develop their cotton programs. He moved to Prescott in 1977. Surviving Mr. Waddle are his wife, Joy; one daughter, Beverly McMurray of Albuquerque, N. M.; two sons, Bill Waddle and his wife, Judy, and their two children, Michael and Melissa, all of Halifax, and Michael Waddle of Winslow, Ark. and two other grandchildren. Laurel Road, Clover, died April 24 at Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Palmer was born in Halifax County on July 5, 1947, the son of the late James Edward Palmer and Evelyn Pleasant Palmer. Mrs. Bailey was born in Halifax County on November 11, 1914, and was 86 years old. She was the daughter of Curry Newton Daniel and Sally Reid Daniel. She was of the Church of God of Prophecy faith. Survivors include several nieces and nephews, and two sisters-in-law. James Ira Dunn James Ira Dunn, 84, of 1209 Noblin Avenue, South Boston, died April 25 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Dunn was born in Halifax County on August 31, 1916, the son of James Dunn and Sally Anne Wilkerson Dunn and was married to Myrtle H. Dunn. He was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church, and was a Veteran of WWII. Survivors include his wife; three granddaughters, Sheila Blanks of South Boston, Donna Blanks of Crystal Hill and Denise Throckmorton and husband, Darrell of Scottsburg; and six great-grandchildren. Raymond Louis Guill Raymond Louis Guill, 81, of Danville, died April 26 in Danville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Guill was born April 22, 1920, in Halifax County the son of Benny Joel Guill and Musa Chaney Guill and was married to Elizabeth Barber Guill. He was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and as Treasurer of the Sunday School Department. He was also a member of the Dan River Retired Club, and was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Braxton Guill of Blackshear, Ga., Zane Guill of Gastonia, N.C. and Barry L. Guill of Ringgold; two daughters, Patricia G. Spencer of Suffolk, and Charlene G. Knapp of Danville; one sister, Virginia Buchanon of Halifax; three brothers, Thornton Guill of Danville, Everett Guill of Brookneal and Josh Guill of Nathalie; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby G. Smith; two brothers, Charlie and Willie Guill, and one granddaughter, Christy L. Guill. April 30, 2001 Martha Wilborn Newby Martha Wilborn Newby, 71, of 2208 Willow Street, South Boston, died Thursday, April 26 at her home. Mrs. Newby was born October 18, 1929, the daughter of the late Herbert Wilborn and Lillie Conner Wilborn. She was married to the late Claude Cephas Newby and was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church where she served with the Bread Ministry. Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Phyllis and John (Tommy) Thompson of Atherton, CA; four sisters: Lula Wilbourn, Margaret Bane, Winnie Newby and Betty Wazeka, all of South Boston; granddaughter: Lauren Thompson and grandson: Seth Thompson. He was the son of Mr. James Massey Wilmoth and Mrs. Iola Fleming Snead Wilmoth and was married to Cindy Lillian Wilmoth. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Vivian Clesta Martin Vivian Clesta Martin, age 72, of Oak Grove Lodge, Chatham died Friday April 27 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born in Halifax County July 12, 1928, daughter of the late Charlie Gordon Martin and Clesta Wilmouth Martin. She spent most of her life in Scottsburg where she was a member of Fork Baptist Church. Survivors include one brother: William Gordon Martin of Scottsburg; three sisters: Clara M. Fred Perkins Mr. Fred Perkins of 1017 William Chism Lane, Halifax died Friday, April 27 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 83. He was born in Oxford, North Carolina on May 16, 1917 and was the son of the late Luther Perkins and Mrs. Lillie Stovall Perkins. He was married to the late Mrs. Vea Arthur McCargo Perkins and was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Perkins is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Thelma P. Glass, Mrs. Catherine P. Davis and Mrs. Doris P. Sydnor, all of Halifax; four sons: Abraham Perkins and Solomon Perkins, both of Halifax; Robert Perkins of South Boston and James Perkins of Clarksville; twenty-nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mrs. Dorothy Royster of Danville and Mrs. Beulah Green Lee of Connecticutt; one brother: Taree Perkins of Alton; one son-in-law: Cellus Glass of Halifax; two daughters-in-law: Mrs. Toni L. Bailey Memorial Hwy., Halifax died April 27 at Duke University Medical Center. He was born in Halifax County February 9, 1987 and was 14 years old. He was the son of William Thomas Satterfield Jr., and Mrs. Diana Glasscock Satterfield. Mr. Sattefield is survived by his parents; one sister: Angela Satterfield of Halifax; his maternal grandmother: Darlene Mullins of South Boston; his paternal grandmother: Dorothy Kinder of Cedar Bluff and his maternal great-grandmother: Lelia Carson of Richmond.
