Ms. Paniel was born in South Boston on May 5, 1978, the daughter of Jerry Stevenson Paniel and Ora King Paniel. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and was employed by Presto Products, Inc. Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Katina Martin of South Boston and Tonya Paniel of Virginia Beach; her paternal grandmother, Ruth Paniel of South Boston; and one devoted brother-in-law, Leon Martin. He was a banker with First & Merchants and National Bank, and was a Veteran of the Air Force. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church, and retired from Burlington Industries. Mr. Henderson was born in Halifax County on June 2, 1926, the son of William Kinsloving Henderson and Annie Kate Hastings Henderson. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Halifax. May 7, 2001 Stella Rebecca Henderson Stella Rebecca Henderson of 1146 N. Main St., South Boston died May 5, 2001 at her home. She was born in Halifax County October 12, 1905 and was 95 years old. She was the daughter of Charlie Edward Henderson and Nannie Sue Crowder Henderson. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a retired employee of Raylass Department Store in South Boston. Miss Henderson is survived by one brother, Charlie E. Henderson of South Boston and one half-brother, L.B. Shields of South Boston. Edward Ray Irby Edward Ray Irby of 116 Hedgerow Drive, Halifax, died May 6, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital. H was born in Halifax County April 13, 1928 and was 73 years old. He was the son of James Clarence Irby and Elizabeth Walker Irby and was married to Janice Wilkerson Irby. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post 8. He was a retired civilian systems analyst with the U.S. Department of the Navy. Mr. Irby is survived by his wife of the home; one daughter, Kimberly Dawn Vause of Great Mills, Md.; one son, Edward Todd Irby of Waldorf, Md.; one granddaughter, Brittany Nicole of Great Mills; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances I and Everette Roller of Mt. Laurel; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Carroll and Patsy Irby of Richmond, Kenneth and Nancy Irby of South Boston, and John Wayne and Becky Irby of Mt. Mr. Martin was retired from the Charlotte County School System where he was a bus driver and school bus mechanic. He had also operated a country store and had been a farmer. Steve Edward Roark Steve Edward Roark, 57, of Clarksville died May 5. Mr. Roark was born March 17, 1944, to Elva Roark and the late William Edwin Roark, and was predeceased by a son, Randy Neal Roark. Mr. Tuck was born in Mecklenburg County, the son of the late James Fletcher Tuck and Nannie Hite. He owned and operated A.S. Tuck Construction Co. for over 50 years. Mr. Willis served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After discharge, he worked and retired from Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk. He lived in the Norfolk, Virginia Beach area for 40 years. He then lived in Halifax County for six years, and in Effingham, S.C. for 15 years, and had recently moved to Clarksville. He was an active member of Evergreen Baptist Church in Effingham. He was born August 21, 1931 in Savannah, Ga. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954 and was retired from Delta Airlines. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Greenwood Jones, two daughters and sons-in-law, Melanie Jones Beaty and John T. Beaty, Jr. of Moreland, and Mary Margaret Jones Norton and Michael S. She was one of the first women elected as deacon of Beth Car, was chairman of the Woman's Missionary Union, a representative to the Dan River Baptist Association, a member of the Board of Trustees of Averett College, served on the advisory board of Patrick Henry Boys' Plantation, served as president of the Halifax Woman's Club and was publicity writer for the club house tours for many years. Mrs. Bagwell was also president of the Halifax Association of University Women, charter member and vice president of the Banister River Garden Club, president of the Halifax PTA, was a founder with Woman's Club of Halifax Friends of Library, was president of Parsons-Bruce Art Association (affiliated with Virginia Museum), a member of the executive committee of the Halifax County Cancer Society; on the board of directors of the Halifax Cancer Association, was chairman of the Professional Division of the 1983 Halifax United Way campaign, a Laubach Literacy coach and one of the organizers of a group fighting for better education and a new consolidated high school. Also, Mrs. Bagwell was educated in the local school system, was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, was elected to the Mortar Board, and completed graduate courses at the University of Virginia. Mr. Coleman was born in Halifax County on March 7, 1929, the son of the late James Coleman and Annie Clay Coleman. He was a member of Five Fork Baptist Church. Survivors include his daughters, Hervoline Betts and Linda Mitchell, both of South Boston, Francine Bellamy of Statesville, N.C., Deborah Van-Johnson of Atlanta, Ga. and Arlene Link of Richmond; his sons, Gregory Coleman of South Boston and Lewis Coleman of Alton; 15 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one sister, Maggie Smith of Baltimore, Md.; four brothers, James Coleman and Charles Coleman, both of South Boston, George Coleman of Landover, Md. and Willie Coleman of Virgilina. Dunn, 83, of Medford, OR, died Tuesday, May 22 at his home. Mr. Dunn was born in Halifax County on April 17, 1918. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the First Methodist Church. His survivors include his wife: Betty Dunn; two daughters: Leslie Dunn-Antelyes of Poughkeepsie, NY and Linda Dunn Croll of Cambridge, MA and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five sisters and brothers. Virginia Dare Moorefield Brown Mrs. Virginia Dare Moorefield Bown of 2149 L. P. Bailey Memorial Hwy., Halifax, died May 26, 2001 at her home. She was born in Campbell County on July 20, 1930 and was 71 years old. She was the daughter of Eugene Jackson Moorefield and Irene Ferrell Moorefield and was married to Wilmer Ross Brown. She was a member of the Center United Church of Christ. Mrs. Brown is survived by two daughters: Patricia Brown-Hall and husband, Kim, of South Boston; Janet Brown McKinney, of High Point, N. Ford of Florence, S.C., died May 26 at Carolina Systems Hospital in Florence at the age of 69. Mr. Ford was born in Albemarle County on June 25, 1931. Waverly Lacks Waverly Lacks, 82, of 1040 Finch Lane, Clover died May 26 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Mr. Lacks was born in Halifax County on August 2, 1918, the son of Jimmy Lacks and Betty Garrett Lacks and was married to Gladys Pleasant Lacks. He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Eliza Brooks of Washington, D.C. and Brenda Lacks of Clover; three sons, Alexander Lacks of New Haven, Ct., Waverly Lacks Jr. and Gary Lacks, both of Clover; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the home. William Thomas Chambers Captain USNR William Thomas 'Tom' Chambers, 83, of Townsend, Ga. died May 9 at his home. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on May 11 in the Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville, Ga. The Rev. Robert Reese officiated. Captain Chambers was a native of Wilkinson County, Ga., the son of the late Frank Breckinridge Chambers and the late Lamar Albea Chambers. He was a retired Captain in the United States Navy and a Veteran of WWII, and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Chambers was a retired manager of the University of Georgia Book Store. He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Darien, Ga., a former volunteer for the United Way and a member of the Northeast Georgia Retired Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Harriett Irby Chambers; one son, William Thomas Chambers Jr. of Hartwell, Ga.; one daughter, Carol Louise Chambers of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Frank B. Chambers of Milledgeville, Ga.; two sisters, Kathleen Chambers Jarratt of Sandersville, and Barbara Chambers Turner of Marietta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Katie Norris and Ben Norris; a daughter-in-law, Donna W. Chambers. Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider the American Cancer Society. Charlotte Veasey Ray Charlotte Veasey Ray, 79, of Fayetteville, N.C. died May 28 in Raleigh, N.C. Mrs. Ray was born in Halifax County the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Steven Bennett Veasey and was married to the late Gillis Ray. She was a member of Gilead Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville. Survivors include two children, Marshall Ray of Fayetteville and Diane Miller of Raleigh; one grandson and one granddaughter; one brother, Dan Veasey of Roanoke and one sister-in-law, Rosetta Veasey of South Boston. She was preceded in death by two grandsons. Funeral services for Mrs. Ray will be held today, May 30 at Gilead Presbyterian Church. Robert W. Lawson Jr. Robert W. Lawson Jr., 92, of Charleston, West Virginia, died on May 28, 2001. Born is South Boston, Virginia, he attended Halifax County schools and was a 1930 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma and Omicron Delta Kappa, a letterman on the Varsity football, basketball and baseball teams, and a recipient of the Gammon Cup for excellence in character, academics and athletics. His record of four pass interceptions in one football game remains unbroken. He was a member of the Hampden-Sydney Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Halifax County Sports Hall of Fame. From 1930 to 1932, Lawson taught and coached at Episcopal High School in Alexandria Va. In 1935, he graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi and the Raven Society, and was an assistant Varsity football coach. He later served as a member of the Law School Alumni Council. He joined the law firm of Steptoe and Johnson in Charleston in 1935, was a partner from 1941 to 1962, senior partner from 1962 to 1984, and was counsel to the firm from 1984 to 1990. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy and was involved in organizing a Naval Reserve Unit in Charleston after the war. He was a member of the Kanawha County Bar Association, the West Virginia State Bar, the West Virginia Bar Association, the American Bar Associaton and the American Law Institute. In addition, he belonged to the American Judicature Society and served on its Board of Directors, was a Fellow of the American Bar Association, a member of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judicial Conference and a member of the United States Supreme Court Historical Society. Lawson was elected to the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association in 1975, and served on the Board of Governors from 1984 to 1986. For many years, he was on the Vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church, Charleston, and served as senior warden. He was also Chancellor of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia from 1956 to 1977. He was a former trustee of Episcopal High School and Hampden-Sydney College, and a former Director of the Greater Charleston Chamber of Commerce. He was a former President of the American Business Club in Charleston. Lawson was a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond from 1967 to 1975 and served as Chairman of its Board from 1972 to 1975. He belonged to the Charleston Rotary Club, Edgewood Country Club and Wytheville, Virginia Country Club. An avid reader, golfer, traveler and sports enthusiast, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, the former Virginia Peyton Broun. Surviving him are sons Robert W. Lawson III of Charleston, West Virginia; Fontaine Broun Lawson and Lewis Peyton Lawson of Richmond, Virginia; eight grandchildren; sister, Mary Elizabeth Lawson Creath of Church Road, Virginia; and brother Lewis D. Johnston Jr., of South Boston, Virginia. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Charleston.
