Miss Ridgeway was born in Halifax County on August 30, 1913, the daughter of the late John Ferris Ridgeway Sr. and the late Mattie Bomar Ridgeway. She was a member of Childrey Baptist Church and a retired employee of Burlington Industries. She is survived by one brother, William T. 'Billie' Ridgeway of Nathalie; five sisters, Catherine Ridgeway, Lucille R. Martin, Roberta R. Booker, Jean Ridgeway, all of Nathalie and Claudine R. Weatherford of Halifax; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers. A funeral service for Miss Ridgeway was held at 2 p.m. September 2 at Childrey Baptist Church by the Rev. Rodney Barwick. Burial was in the church cemetery. Leaone Watts Hackney Leaone Watts Hackney, 76, of 1015 Quail Lane, Halifax, died August 31 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Hackney was born in Halifax County on December 30, 1924, the daughter of John Richard Watts and Mary Bennett Watts and was married to Ollie Hackney. She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church and a retired beautician. A funeral service will be held today, September 3 at 11 a.m. at Dan River Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw, Lewis Wall, and Dr. Lynn Marstin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hackney is survived by her husband; two sons, David Hackney and his wife, Vickie of Ringgold and Mark Hackney and his wife, Joan of Wilmington, N.C.; two brothers, J.B. William Caroll Headspeth William Carroll Headspeth, 103, of 1801 Chamberlain St., South Boston, died August 30 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Headspeth was born in South Boston on September 19, 1898, the son of John Branch Headspeth and Annie Beazley Headspeth, and was married to Ella Anderson Headspeth. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a longtime member of the Lacy Bible Class. He also was a charter member of the South Boston Lions Club and a member of Woodman of the World Camp 106, where he served as treasurer. He was an honorary member of the DAR and the UDC and was very active with the Bicentennial Committee of 1976. He was an employee of Carroll's Auto Supply and South Boston News & Record Advertiser. Mr. Welcher was born in Halifax County on July 16, 1937, the son of Floyd Calvin Welcher Sr. and Annie Fleming Welcher and was married to Jean White Landrum Welcher. He was a member and trustee of Ingram Christian Church. Grove St., Lincolnton, N.C. died September 3, 2001 at Lincolnton Medical Hospital. She was 64 years old. Mrs. Prowell was born in Halifax County May 2, 1937, the daughter of Archer Jones and Iola Trammell Jones and was married to Clifton Cash Prowell. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Mrs. Prowell is survived by her husband; three sons, David M. Saad of Lockport, Ill., Mark L. Prowell and Clifton H. September 10, 2001 John Richard 'Dick' Haymes Jr. John Richard 'Dick' Haymes Jr., 78, of Richmond, died September 7, 2001, at Windsor Nursing Home, Richmond. Born in Richmond on December 18, 1922, he was the son of John Richard Haymes Sr. and Sara Dillard Haymes Penick. The family resided in South Boston during his youth. Mr. Haymes enlisted and served as a Navigator in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia, an MBA degree from Harvard Business School, his JD degree from the TC Williams School of Law, a Master's degree in Law and Taxation from the Marshall Wythe School of Law, the College of William and Mary. He retired from the Richmond City Attorney's office in 1983 and continued in private law practice until July, 2001. Survivors include three sons, J. Richard Haymes II and wife, Julie of Concord, Ca., Joshua D. Haymes of Richmond, and B. Mason Haymes of Richmond; two grandsons, Ethan and Mason Haymes of Concord; a sister, Martha Haymes Vaughan of Richmond; two nieces, Marty Vaughan of Richmond and Dillard Vaughan Philpott of Fredericksburg. He was the husband of the late Lorine Jordan Saunders. Mr. Saunders was born December 30, 1927, in Halifax County, the son of the late Bernard David Saunders and Nannie St. John Saunders. He retired from Griffin Pipe and Foundry Company, was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, L. Marshall Saunders and his wife, Barbara of Monroe; one daughter, Gwendolyn S. She was a member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church, and was employed as a beautician/cleaning service. September 17, 2001 Moses Daniel Dunkley Moses Daniel Dunkley, 85, of 406 Oak Lane, South Boston, died September 14 at Twin Oaks Convalescent Home. Mr. Dunkley was born in Halifax County on January 24, 1916, the son of the late John Daniel Dunkley and Nora Yates Dunkley. He was an Army veteran and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the American Legion. He is survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Dunkley. Annie Mae Boxley Annie Mae Boxley, 82, of South Boston died September 14 at the Berry Hill Nursing Home. Ms. Boxley was born on February 12, 1919 in Halifax County to the late Daniel and Kate Faulkner. Mr. Clark was born in Halifax County on September 9, 1921, the son of Oscar Ellis Clark Sr. and Mary Strange Clark and was married to Lucille Satterfield Clark. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a World War II Army Veteran serving in the 80th Division, 317th Infantry, a member of Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club, charter member of Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Woodmen of the World Camp 127. Survivors of Mr. Clark include his wife; one brother, Roy Hutcherson Clark of South Boston; several nieces and nephews, A.T. Clark Jr., June Trammell, both of Keeling, Susan Williams of Blairs, Michael Clark, Carol Howerton, Al Satterfield, Jamie Satterfield and Tracey Barksdale of Sutherlin, and Brenda Ford of Cluster Springs. He was preceded in death by one brother, Aubrey Thomas Clark Sr. Funeral services for Mr. Clark will be held September 29 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Willis conducting the service. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens with Woodmen Rites. The family will receive friends at the home.
